First of all, i'd like to know your take on Pre-ordering, is it flat out stupid thing to do ? or can we encourage good devs with solid track record ,like CDPR, by doing so? Do devs really count on the pre-ordering sales ?

Secondly, please mention what games you pre-ordered this year and WHY did you do it.

Personally, i've never pre-ordered any game ...mainly because usually i don't purchase games day1 with full price (can't afford it)... i don't know if devs really count on it, i'd be more than happy to do it ....i mean they have the budget required for the project ,,,it's not a kickstarter thing so technically they don't need it (correct me if i'm wrong) ... after all, some of them deserve our support and it can be encouraging.

Never pre ordered anything, I genuinely don't understand why people enjoy paying for stuff in advance of getting it?

Devs get my money when they give me the game, not before :P

Is it an American thing where if you preorder, you have to put money down?

I never have to pay a thing, hence why I preorder all the time. Might as well get the goodies that come with it.

Pre-ordering doesn't mean you pay anything up front. Assuming we are talking an online pre-order, normally you aren't charged until the item ships - and if change your mind, typically you can cancel (at least it's easy to do that at Amazon or Best Buy)

I used to pre-order all the time when they had bonus deals. I.e. you get $10 or $20 gift card for pre-ordering. Dell gave $25 to lock in an order on Star Wars: Battlefront. So, in a way, that made the game only cost $35 for me instead of $60. The only downside, is Dell doesn't have a great selection to spend that $25. But I figure worst case I can get another 3DS game with it.

I would never pre-order a game for $59.99 though. There has to be some reason to, otherwise I would just by it normally.

I don't think I've pre-ordered a game since the late 90's.

Pre-ordering used to be a something worth doing because I wanted a copy of the game the day of. But now a days that value as disappeared. As for games that I have pre-ordered Halo 5, Batman Arkham Knight, and Mortal Kombat X. That is it. My job has me on the road to much to pre-order let alone buy games at the rate I did back in college. So it is what it is at this point.

I remember when it was hard to get popular game copies on release.

Got halo 2 limited edition on opening day in target and it ran out pretty fast in general.

Or halo 3.

@2Chalupas: Oh sure, if it benefits you it make sense. Game shops here let you pre order, but require you to put some money down (5 to 10 euros usually) and don't actually give any benefits. So that's what I don't understand.

It seems like ever since Halo 2 did the metal case bonus, pre-ordering has become some sort of taboo thing to a lot of people. I've never thought much about it, and I don't think anyone else did either before that.

Anyway, I rarely buy games day one, so if I decide to pre-order, it has to be for a game that I really want. The last one I did it for was Rodea the Sky Soldier, because not only had I been waiting around 3 or 4 years for it, but it's going to be without a doubt a major collector's item, so it was a no brainer decision for me. I also backed Shenmue III and Bloodstained, but I don't know if you can consider that pre-ordering.

Witcher 3 and Starcraft 2: Legacy of the Void. Were one of my most anticipated games and knew they will work day one, especially Starcraft 2.

Battlefront, Fire Emblem Special Edition, Twlight Princess HD, Persona 4 DAN, Zestiria CE, Gears UE

Way too much. Only Fire Emblem and Persona should be a must.

I didn't preorder a game that released this year. I did, however, preorder Street Fighter V because I wanted in on the beta and I was going to get it day one anyways.

I pre-order a decent amount because of the deals you can get. I pre-ordered Mad Max for 30, and Siege for $44 (compared to $80 on steam for us Canadians).

I would have pre-ordered Witcher 3 but it came with my GPU.

If I can't get a heavy discount/its a game I am really unsure about, I won't pre-order.

I wish people would STOP pre-ordering. Publishers and developers being able to profit before the product has been released sends the message that they've gained our business without earning it. Thus leading to complacency and subsequently the poor quality and production of our games.

We need to collectively condition the publishers and developers that they need to actually work to earn our dollar, they got to show us something first that shows us it's actually worth buying. Only after should we be willing to spend the cash, never before that.

I mostly preordered 3DS games this year.

I got

  1. Street Fighter V (for Beta)
  2. Xenoblade X (Limited)
  3. Etrain Odyssey Untold 2 (soundtrack)
  4. Senran Kagura 2 (Cool Soundtrack)
  5. Etrain Odyssey Mystery Dungeon (soundtrack)
  6. Devil Survivor 2 Record Breaker (noticed I've been getting a lot of atlus soundtracks)
  7. Dragon Ball Z Extreme Butouden (Super butouden 2 came with it)
  8. Majora's Mask 3D (didn't get the bonus in time)

and I think that covers it. Everything else I bought on Launch or days after.

I only pre-order with Developers I trust and for the Collector's Versions/Special versions of games that I may have a hard time hunting down. I trust Kojima, Harmonix, Monolith Soft, and Rocksteady (for example, but I trust a few others). I got special versions of these games, no fuss.

I do dislike supporting sketchy developers with pre orders however, especially with companies like Activision, Ubisoft, and EA.

I reserved:

  1. Xenosaga C.E.,
  2. Rockband 4 Instruments Version,
  3. Metal Gear Solid V: C.E.
  4. Batman AK C.E.

all come to mind.

I also bought other games this year, but with pre-ordering like Super Mario Maker, Witcher 3, Fallout 4, etc. I also come across C.E. versions of games so you never know which ones will be over produced. Halo 5 for example I come across C.E.s for that all the time, but I saw the same thing with Halo 4, Halo Reach, Halo 3, so I'm used to that.

Side note: I also got a deal on all of these games (I didn't pay full retail as luck would have it).

---

Here's my MGV C.E.. The PS4 version was hard to come by

I just digital pre-ordered to have them downloaded to console early:

  • Dying Light
  • State of Decay: Year One Survival Edition
  • Batman: Arkham Knight
  • Mad Max
  • MGS5:TPP

That's it though, XBL Rewards as of September 1st doesn't give rebates on pre-orders. So for that extra $5 rebate on top of the $5 I save on no sales tax, I buy them digitally the moment they release. Which sucks because no pre-installing so it's ready to play at the stroke of 9PM.

Yes, this explains a lot of things. And no, this isn't sarcasm but this will most likely never happen given the gaming community as a whole.

As for the topic at hand, I haven't pre-ordered anything this year. I don't have the intention to do so anymore.

I only pre-order CE's or LE's. Well wait that's not true, sometimes I will preorder digitally so I can have a game I know I want preloaded and ready to go on launch day.

Lol, ouch man. Yet another reason to never pre-order games. You're never guaranteed the game actually works.
