I looked up this question and didn't find much on it, except this Yahoo Answers question, which has people answering with games like Metal Gear Solid, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Super Paper Mario, Resident Evil, Silent Hill, etc.

Keep in mind: I don't mean non-story related content, though feel free to answer that question too, if you wish.

The longest it ever took me to beat a game was Dark Souls, but now I can do it under five hours easily (and only an hour and a half in Demon's Souls), but the amount of games I've played is limited.

Well, what is it?

For dedicated single player there are a lot of games on the PC that don't really end. There are also a lot of grand strategy and sims that have practically unlimited content. These games aren't on the consoles because they aren't that popular in general. Huge time sinks that very few people have the patience for.

It's a pretty broad question.

I don't know which one of these is the longest, but these are all games with really long single-player experiences:

  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
  • Donkey Kong Country Returns (if you try to 200% complete)
  • Xenoblade

Recently?

Dark Souls. I'm 30+ hours in. Still not finished, but man, this is one lengthy game. And it's not like there's a bazillion side quests to complete. I'm just keeping up with the story.

The longest shooter campaign I've ever played was Resident Evil 6. Clocking in around 20+ hours.

It took me seventy eight hours to play through Project X Zone. Excellent game but it was about ten levels too long.

Fallout 3 with all the DLC.

Mass effect 2.

They can get pretty long if you do all the side stuff.

I put in like 300 or more hours in Dragon Age Origins trying to get the platinum.

120 for the platinum in Skyrim.

Ni No Kuni took me about 80 hours with all of the sidequests before the end.

I play lots of RPGs, so most games just feel short rather than some feeling long.

Empire: Total War. The games listed above (sorry chums) are absolutely nothing compared to the scope of Empire. Is it perfect? Far from it. Will it each up weeks, if not months of your time? Yes.

If you consider side missions, easily Bethesda games. I have over 350 hours on my main Oblivion and Skyrim characters.

Any racing sim begs to differ I suppose. I could play GT pretty much endlessly so yeah I guess you are correct.

But you're wrong about GTA games. After finishing side quests and story it's not campaign just dicking around. And all the sidequests and main story only would take like 50 hours, unless you drive to every place manually, which just kinda sucks. Maybe I'm just really tired of GTA like games.

How and why would you want to beat Demon's & Dark Souls so quickly is my question. I suppose GTA V is long. Had the game since mid-October and I sense I'm barely halfway through. P4G took me a little over 70 hours.

Xenoblade, seriously, 80 hours to beat the single player campaign.

Literally over 150 hours to COMPLETE (get everything, unlock skill trees, all sidequests, all achievements, all secret artes, and all secret locations, colony 6 fully rebuilt, and all maps completed).

I bet it takes 200 to complete it tbh.

Dragon Age Origins for me. I didn't even do most of the sidequests, and it still took close to 60 hours.

Persona 3 FES probably. Apparently it takes over 120 hours just to finish the game, let alone the side stuff.

Well i've heard people play Civilization for months... @_@

Aside from that legit gameplay and length with no extras according to my cousin is Xenozaga which he claims is over 80 hours i never played it and I think he might have just gotten lost......

Dark Souls did took long to be my first play through but i recognize is actually a 4 - 5 hour game if you just play it up to beat it with the right build. Still better than most games imo and my favorite for now :)

Idc if it counts ghouls n ghost cause I don't think that game ever ends.

If that doesn't count then it's most likely jrpg most western games are long but only if you enjoy the world and do the side quest.

Btw I don't think dark souls or demon souls should count they aren't overally long games they just are hard. Once you've mastered them they don't take long to beat. If we can count hard games I would say battle toads takes longer to beat then the souls games on the first play through.

Gotta set parameters to really compile an official list. I'd be stunned if it weren't an RPG - many are pumped full of sidequests and offshoot quests that bloat their length to groan-inducing levels.

For me personally, it would be Skyrim with 100+ hours, then probably Mass Effect games which take me around 40 and I think I got about 40 on AC Black Flag with still stuff to do in it.

Non-rpg I would say Okami HD. One the few games where I was suprised (happily) that the story kept going and you just got stronger and stronger. The first time on PS2 it was around 52 hours. but if you want to get technical just check out MMOs.

So hard to say, it all depends on completion levels, skill, side activities etc...

If you are simply meaning going through the story and only the story and counting the time until the main story is done, then that will take a lot of RPGs out of the running, as when stripped down to main story, they are not usually all that long. At that point Racing games will likely be the longest, perhaps Gran Turismo 4?

If you include side activities, exploring and what not, then RPGs shoot way further than any other genre, probably something like Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for that.

TL;DR:

Gran Turismo 4 or Oblivion, depending what you include in parameters.
