PC invented the most popular (Factually) and some of the best genres To date:

-FPS (CoD/BF/CS)

-MMO (WoW/GW)

-MOBA (LOL/DOTA)

-Open World (GTA,TES)

-Builder (Minecraft)

-WRPG/CRPG

-RTS/TBS

Nothing comes close. You can not name a genre that is more popular that was invented on Console.

They didn't. The ET-stuff is being seriously overrated. Gaming only crashed a little bit and it only did so in the US.

Yet people talk like it's this huge global crash.

Technically they gave us video gaming.

In more recent history

DLC

Pre-order bonuses

Levels and unlocks in multi-player FPS games

Limited weapons in single player FPS games

Short, linear, cut scene heavy movie games

Hard difficulty really means Easy with a.i. spawning more often

Guess I should have looked more into this before I posted, however I still thought Nintendo helped brought more innovation in the gaming industry.

I wonder how screwed consoles would be if Fallout, Crysis, Battlefield, Call of Duty, Far Cry, The Elder Scrolls, Deus Ex, The Witcher, Half Life and pretty much any other IP or developer started on PC first stayed exclusive.

It just that it got over dramatized so much it's what many believe to be the truth. Even I did for a long time.

"I still thought Nintendo helped brought more innovation"

Totally agree with that. I also do not agree with the OP in that PCs only bring innovation and consoles don't.

I can continue this flame thread and list a lot of crappy stuff the consoles brought us like horse armor DLC. But then I could also say PC brought us crappy, unfinished, braindead zombie survival games :P

Mass Effect? It was on PC too. It was made on consoles and PC at the same time but released only few months eariler on consoles to have bigger profit.

Greand Theft Auto was on PC.

So far you have listed only Dark Souls and Metal Gear. Final Fantasy is so bad. Look their latest games.

How about this answer: Today's gaming industry?

I would wager that 75% of gamers, if not more, had their first gaming experience on a console...so consoles gave us the robust industry we enjoy today. Without the accessibility of consoles, gaming would be a small niche market rather than the multi-billion dollar market it is today.

Anyone that gamed in the pre Windows 95 era (and even then) remembers how big of a pain in the ass PC gaming used to be.

I'll take a link over your wager. Give proof w/ such claims.

I can link to you showing PC has more hardware and gaming software sales than all 6 consoles combined, though.

The biggest genres and games were invented on PC.

Consoles? Well here is my list for what they did:

- Made an easy entry Space for people into gaming (in the 80 start 90).

- Made Platformers Work and fun.

- Everything Nintendo, no seriously, that shit is gold.

- Highly polished gaming experiences (not the same as Deep or good, but polished, and that is credit it really does deserve).

- Open World games (as in GTA 3, prior GTA games started on PC, but the consoles started the 3d open World thing, I think).

- JRPG's You can debate if JRPGs are from consoles (I argue that the prior games to WRPGs and JRPGs are a different genre then both).

- made fighting games, and beat'em'ups viable at home.

As time has advanced Consoles have had less and less of an impact, but they did offer, some truely great Things. It may not have invented alot of Things (most came from arcade machines) But the consoles proved that it could be replicated at home (and Thus killed off arcades in the West).

Man I miss those times :\

Most don't start on PC. NES, SNES, and Genesis killed PC gaming back in their day. Video games are as popular as they are, today, because of Consoles in the late 80s and early 90s.

That's my opinion and I don't give a shit if you don't share it.

Consoles gave the industry an identity. Consoles brought about a growth in the industry, gamers, and the technology behind all of it.

The first gpu was console based. Controllers have evolved because of consoles. Contrary to popular belief, E-sport is not a concept that began on pc. There were arcade competitions long before this--sponsored AND around game/rental stores.

Consoles really made game development studios relevant in the first place.

lol

VR? Sim? Competitive gaming?

VR was done in arcades, first. Aren't simulators custom built machines used to train people in X/Y fields? As I said before there was competitive gaming long before any e-sport/mlg tagline.

Wasn't the first tps game on consoles? Regardless, it was Mario 64 that influenced this journey to the genre. You also mention GTA--the 2d ones started on pc, but the first 3d gta was a console based game. Body Harvest on N64 was done by the same company, and is very similar to gta.

Both consoles and PC have brought us more great games than you could possibly list.

The gaming landscape would suck without the history provided by either of the two.

None of the mentioned genres were created by PCs. They were all created by men. And most of the genres would have been created anyway. On which platform they occurred first, does not really matter.

There are only few game genres that probably would not have been created on consoles, and this is mainly due to the input devices. This particularly includes most kinds of strategy games. But then again, some of these genres already existed on home computers before the PC became popular as a gaming platform.

Your perception is not incorrect, yes there was a huge gaming crash in america and yes Nintendo saved the industry on this side of the world, but not only that since it also made the concept of video games "cool" or mainstream in the entire world, then the amazing 16 bit war with SEGA helped to put video games in the map...without Nintendo (and other consoles) gaming would not be what it is today, not even for Hermits since they would probably still be playing text based games...

@jhonMalcovich: It would literally take me hours to list most of the key games that consoles gave to the world, but I'll list a few of them.

Mario, Zelda, Sonic, Resident Evil. Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Devil May Cry, Mass Effect, Halo, Pikmin, Metroid, Star Fox, EarthWorm Jim, Uncharted, Crackdown, Gears of War, Demon/Dark Souls, Virtua Fighter, Tekken, Street Fighter, NBA 2K, NFL 2K, Forza, PGR, Suikoden, Phantasy Star, Crazy Taxi, Donkey Kong, Pacman, Tempest, Asteroids, Punch Out, Dance Central, Kinect Sports, Wii Sports, Wave Racer, Killzone, Resistance and 1000's and 1000's of other games.

Console games pretty much saved the gaming industry. Even though PC gaming was still alive after the 1983 Game Crash. It wasn't doing much. It was surviving, but not really growing. The only thing that was still growing was Arcades at the time. Thankfully Nintendo came along and revived the industry.
