In your opinion what old 10-15 year old 3D games have aged the best?
RTCW 15 years old.
Visually?
Windwaker, MGS2, FFX, and Ico all released in 2001 and are still easy on the eyes, aliasing being the worst factor of course.
Edit: Windwaker 2002, close enough though.
Ninja Gaiden Black and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory (both 2005) also still hold their own. I'd post pics, but most of the decent ones are super sampled bullshots.
2001-2006:
Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
Mafia: The City of Lost Heaven
Half Life 2
No One Lives Forever 2
Company of Heroes
FEAR
Silent Hill 2 PC
Vampire: The Masquerade- Bloodlines
Graphically or gameplay?
On the gameplay front a lot of GameBoy games have, Advance or Color, because those rarely focused on graphics and used a lot of tried and true genres already. It was more about refinement then, and it shows in games like Mario and Luigi SuperStar Saga, Minish Cap, etc
Edit: I'm an idiot and didn't read 3D
Gameplay wise? tons of them
Visually? Resident Evil 4, the Metroid Prime games, Okami and Wind Waker, Ninja Gaiden 1, Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, hell I think stylized games like MGS2 and 3 still look visually pleasing. Half Life 2's character models and facial animations are top notch. Butcher Bay is fantastic in spots. Even boring ass Doom 3 looks fairly solid.
Kameo on 360... A side from aliasing and poor texture filtering it still has texture detail that batter some newer games.
Pretty much, i could list Nintendo games all day for this thing, their games age so well.
Ninja Gaiden Black and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory (both 2005) also still hold their own. I'd post pics, but most of the decent ones are super sampled bullshots.
One of the joys of pc gaming, old ass games that didn't even support 1080 can be downsampled to 4k.
A couple of them as well you can force ambient occlusion via nvidia inspector - not sure about ATI cards.
In terms of gameplay, many:
Visually a lot of games from 6th gen still look fantastic. A good looking game from each of the 3 consoles ; Klonoa 2, f-zero gx and Panzer dragoon orta. When you think about it games haven't come all that far, the jump from N64 to GC is bigger than GC to even modern hardware.
As far as realistic graphics from then, nothing's aged as well as Re4 (gamecube). The lighting and character models are still very decent, though the textures are pretty rank.
@ConanTheStoner: Ninja Gaiden Black and Splinter Cell Chaos Theory (both 2005) also still hold their own. I'd post pics, but most of the decent ones are super sampled bullshots"
Agreed so much. I can easily play those games today. Even the animations are wonderbewbs.
I still love Oni from ps2.
2001-2006:
Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne
Half Life 2
No One Lives Forever 2
OH HELL YEAH! :D
All the games im going to list are on pc since you can run them at really high resolutions with AA and Supersampling max'd out making them look really great.
C&C Generals [2003] - Game looks crisp, plays well even now. Its a bit tricky to get 1080p working in this game but its possible, but like many early 2000's games, you need to either edit the ini files or force it some other way if its not in the options.
Silent Storm [2004] - the graphics i think are really well done when you realize how flexible the camera movement is and how useful it is in enhancing the gameplay. There is also so much detail with the physics in the game which i haven't seen this level of detail put into physics in any turn based game since. Guns, bullets/ammo, bodies etc will roll down hills, fly through windows and doors, buildings will fall down. Its strange how advanced the physics engine was in this game, and it rarely bugged out also unlike so many other physics engines you see in even new games.
Freelancer [2003] - this games really old also, 2003 i think. The characters look pretty crappy in cutscenes but the graphics in space look very clean and crisp and mostly hold up to this day. The gameplays still fun to play also.
Need for Speed Most Wanted [2005] - Again, the graphics look really great, but you need to download an addon to allow you to set high resolutions 1080p or higher, once you do that you can set it to anything you want. Also the game plays great, its my favourite NFS game of all time, and played a few after it but was disappointed and classify this one as my favourite NFS game.
Bloodrayne 2 [2004] - The game looked great at its release but you can run this with higher res textures, and higher native resolution/wide screen support also if you download this well made mod called BloodRayne 2 FSAA Patch, allows endless configuration options and also allows you to easily modify many ingame textures without having to repack any files. Its mods like this that give new life into an old game and add a lot modification possibilities to a game.
Problem with all these older games, is getting them to actually run at 1920x1080 or beyond.... all of these I listed here require some creative way or extra utility to run to allow you to even do this. For freelancer for example, you can set it to 1920x1080, but when you do so, the UI is all out of wack, luckily someone made a modification so when you do run it at 1080p the UI will look normal.
Okami, wind waker, all mario karts minus snes, FFX, crysis, Doom(all of them), Starlancer, Wing Commander 4, Battlefront 2, most need for speed games, so many I'm forgetting I'm sure.
The average age of SW is actually about 30, surprisingly, according to a poll that was posted here not too long ago.
30? Geeze, bunch of kids around here. :)
Heavily cell shaded games like Okami are great examples. I would also add a lot of Dreamcast stuff in there like Soul Calibur or Tekken Tag on PS2 (US version).

Panzer Dragoon Orta (2002), just goes to show amazing art style and gameplay can make a game age gracefully.
The real hard question to ask though is what 15-20 year old 3D games aged the best (more specifically PS1, N64, and Sega Saturn titles, and PC games of the time), after all it wa about that time that the first wave of home console 3D games first appeared in mass, and man-oh-man how many of them have not aged that well.
The most well aged games imho are the games of 80s , in arcades mainly , that still everyone can play right now and have fun in the exactly same fashion people did 30 years ago.
