Nintendo: "We have failed to establish Wii U as a "worthy" Wii successor"

http://www.gamespot.com/articles/nintendo-we-have-failed-to-establish-wii-u-as-a-worthy-wii-successor/1100-6415888/

The Wii U has struggled so far, selling 3.91 million units globally since launch, below Nintendo's expectations for the platform. Part of the difficulty of getting the platform off the ground comes down to Nintendo's inability to release games and services that demonstrate the Wii U's novelty relative to the original Wii, president Satoru Iwata has said.

"Except for its backward compatibility with existing Wii software and accessories, we have so far failed to make propositions worthy of Wii U's position as a successor to the Wii system," Iwata said during Nintendo's second quarter financial results briefing.

Wii Sports Club for Wii U and Wii Fit U, sequels to "defining" Wii games, are now available in Japan. These titles should help spur sales in Japan and abroad, but success won't come overnight, Iwata cautioned.

"I remarked a while ago that it is difficult to change our prospects with just one title. Our objective for Wii U for the upcoming year-end sales season will be to dramatically change the environment surrounding Wii U with multiple key titles that can appeal to a wide range of consumers," he said.

The "key title" and "central pillar" for Wii U this holiday season, Iwata said, is Super Mario 3D World, which will be released on November 22. Other games that Nintendo has high hopes for are Wii Party U (ideal to play at New Year's holiday gatherings, Iwata said) and Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

Nintendo will also release Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze in December, before high-profile games like Mario Kart 8 and Super Smash Bros. arrive in 2014.

Nintendo is admitting their system is failure.......thanks we already know this.RIP.....WiiU.

#9 Posted by NFJSupreme (5089 posts) -

does this mean they will release a real console now? If so I'd still be down for going nintendo again. I don't think they understand just how many people would give them a chance again if they got back into the core console market.

#10 Posted by no-scope-AK47 (2677 posts) -

It is sad to see this happen to nintendo but the company did this to themselves. They sit on a couple games and release hardware that is under powered and over priced with no features. That might have worked back in the day but in the current market well the results speak for themselves.

Well...I wanted to see a proper 3D Mario on your console to buy it but then you brought Super Mario World which looks like a very simple project compared to the more ambitious Super Mario Galaxies.

Plus their most exciting titles are not releasing in the holiday window like Project X and Super Smash bros, if those released in this holiday there would have been another story with the Wii U.

Lastly, why did you not name it the Super Wii? the Wii U name alone is crappy and is not an indicative of a new console, everybody thought Wii Pad to be an accessory for the Wii, plus you can't compete against the iPad like EVER! so why did Nintendo go after the iPad audience I don't know, they should have kept their wii remote and made more advanced.

EDIT: Another stupid move is making the Hardware last gen, Ninty can't do that everytime and expects everybody to be happy about it.

the Wii U should have been more powerful, the gap between Wii and PS4/Xbone should have been like the PS2 and Gamecube, with this gap Nintendo could at least grab some of the third party franchises in between their exclusives releases.

Nintengodno actually thinks those shytty games will save their crappy wii eww? The system is done.

Best Ive ever seen it said. It is next gen, just not enough to get consumers attention.

Anyone who buys a Wii U now is an idiot. its best to wait it out till the end of the holidays and see what Ninty decide to do with the systems future.

If it makes them feel better....I'll be picking one up.

Should have named the console something else other than Wii U.

It was released too early imo and they took too long to deliver us games.

I think the name is the biggest hurdle. Most people probably think it's a version of the Wii.

Why would you call anyone an idiot base on their system of choice for the holidays?

Because potential buyers will be stuck with a $300 paperweight if nintendo decide to stop production on the Wii U if sales dont meet their expectations after the holidays.

i'll just leave this here: http://www.gamespot.com/forums/system-wars-314159282/iwata-nintendo-s-future-will-be-determined-this-ho-30892530/?page=1

Go third party and make some actual fucking new IPs, Metroid, Mario and Zelda are good, but nostalgia isn't gonna carry Nintendo.

What does that make someone who buys a PS4 at launch? You can't call them someone with foresight because console value depreciate over the span of the generation until they no longer make the console. If it's about games, then wait for a year before the games you want comes (eg. FF15 and KH3).

It doesn't matter what the power of the console is, or whether you can just plug in an external hard drive for more storage without a screwdriver. If the console has the games you want to play, the investment alone has paid off.If you prefer Killzone, go ahead. Just don't pretend that everyone likes Killzone and that the PS4 is the best thing since sliced bread (right now, it's becoming apparent that Sony is very good at keeping a lid on bad news).

That is true, all the consoles are really bad investments right now, i'd wait till 2014.

That's a dumb reason, not all games cater to everyone you know. Some prefer Mario over GTA, others prefer only AAA games and their are those to prefer mobile games over console and PC games. It's reality.

where in my post did i mention games? i said stop production, as in no more Wii U will be manufactured, meaning no more games will be made for the system once the ones currently in development are finished..Here, read this since it seems you conveniently overlooked this thread:

What if the wii ewww gets dreamcasted? I don't think nintengodno would continue to invest in a system with only 10 million systems sold by 2020, half of which would have been returned.

What if it doesn't?

Will you keep crying about it?

It's cute that Iwata thinks those games will sell. The only reason Wii Fit and Wii Sports sold is because casuals embraced the original Wii. They aren't doing that this time. They will bomb in sales just like the Wii U.

The tablet is a garbage controller, the system is ridiculously under powered, the online is a joke, no third party support, and it's overpriced. All the ingredients necessary to make a POS.

The system is tracking well behind the Dreamcast and it's first year on the market. Nintendo chased a group of consumers that are completely unreliable, and it burned them big time. The WIi only succeeded because casuals bought into the garbage motion control gimmick. Casuals don't give a **** about a low resolution tablet controller.

Offer me a 149.99 Wii U with the pro controller, and i will buy one just to play Mario and Zelda.

No shit. If you had named it Wii 2 then people would instantly recognize that it was a fucking successor and not a freaking add on.

#34 Posted by david61983 (149 posts) -

Nintendo and it's psychotic fanboys did this to themselves. The sad thing is that they have a lot of quality exclusive franchises, but their hardware is pure garbage. That wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing if they priced it right. We're in a terrible economy where many people are unemployed or underemployed, and I'm sure many of them would jump at a chance to get a Wii U in the $150-$199 range rather than pay $400-$500 for the PS4 or Xbone. Nintendo is probably the dumbest company in the world though so I doubt they will figure that out. Looks like another Dreamcast unfortunately so I wouldn't touch one with a ten foot pole no matter how big of a Nintendo fan you are.

Nintendo didn't make WiiU "Next Gen" enough.

That is true, but a lot of people who bought the Wii, bought it for Wii sports and are happy and content with it and not looking to upgrade to any system.

#36 Posted by clr84651 (5338 posts) -

Nintendo failed out of the gate.

#37 Edited by superclocked (5823 posts) -

They tried to rush the system out before MS and Sony, hoping that the early release would give them a nice lead. But, the tablet gimmick drove the price far too high for such a weak console, and the game selection was and still is lacking must have titles. The WiiU would sell much better if they would just drop the tablet gimmick and lower the price to $199...

#38 Posted by superbuuman (2583 posts) -

No one to blame but themselves & their stubborness, how can they not learn/study from 360/PS3 is beyond anyone's comprehension..guess this is their price of wanting to be different for the sake of being different.

#39 Edited by kazrium (1542 posts) -

They admit what is obvious. Have faith my sheep friends, Nintendo has some tricks up their sleeves. 3DS = Slow Start, look where it is now.

#40 Edited by MirkoS77 (6970 posts) -

More explanations, great. I'd love to be able to run a company and explain its ineptitude without taking any action long before to make sure it doesn't happen. Like maybe not sitting on their asses for two damn years doing absolutely nothing before it even launched. Everytime Iwata speaks it's just all the more painful and pathetic.

This man and his management have turned Nintendo from legend into laughingstock. But I suppose that's the danger of promoting a game designer to the CEO of a multi-billion dollar company.

Nintendo is about as delusional as the lems these days.

#42 Edited by resevl4rlz (3248 posts) -

#44 Posted by getyeryayasout (7027 posts) -

WiiU needs more graphics. Pre order canceled.

#45 Edited by GotNugz (650 posts) -

Why can't they just go third party already? Could you imagine playing Zelda, or metroid or some new ip on the PS4. If I were MS and I was sitting on all that cash I would make an offer that Nintendo would find hard to resist, and all the talk of 720p and such would go away overnight.

#46 Posted by Lucianu (9308 posts) -
