In some aspects the dreamcast was more powerful, in others it was weaker. It failed because people bought into sony's hype. Hilariously, some people still buy into it.

the playstation brand did more for gaming than any other console brand, if it wasnt for sony we would still be playing side scrollers. ps1 had the best games, ps2 had the best games, and now ps3 has the best games. every1 else just copies

Nintendo. End of Argument.

Dreamcast failed because Sega screwed developers big time with the Saturn. Sega bailed out early on the saturn to make the dreamcast. EA stopped making games for them because of this and it was the beginning of the end for Sega.

During the 1980's EA were never really interested in console games - they dismissed the consoles as a passing fad. This mentality was still inforce until they realised the Megadrive/Genesis was becoming a giant sucess in USAEurope . When EA finally decided to enter the console game business, didn't they release cartridges/games for Genesis that were not officially endorsed by SEGA. Hence the whole Sega & EA relationship seed was soured many years before the DC released. EA's Sega & Nintendo 32/64bit games were mostly poorly conceived & badly developed licenced trash. Its only the last 4/5 years have EA improved their games - yet many still feel like mass market trash mind.EA bought up all the official licences to destroy competition NFL & NHL - tried same with XBOX 1 (amped etc.),

The EA/Sega relationship soured because Sega knew that sports games were incredibly successful which is why the Mega Drive did so well. EA wanted full monopoly on sports game development for the Dreamcast, but Sega said no, so EA didn't support them.

Sega's 2K series were incredibly well made. Their NBA, NFL, and Tennis games scored very high across the board, but they were not as popular as games like Madden regardless of quality.

It failed because:

A) It didn't have a DVD player

B) Mistakes made Sega in past generations

It really did everything it could right. It was at a reasonable price, had good marketing, and tons of good games. Sega just made to many bad decisions in past generations. Still, it had some support after it was discontinued. Games continued to be released in Japan long after they stopped coming out in the west, with the last official DC game, TriggerHeart Exelica, coming out in 2006.

Lack of alternatives. Dreamcast was first out the gate, so it had the sixth generation all to itself...until Sony's PS2 came out.

Hey, sometimes old school is best. It keeps things simple, and I think that was part of the charm of Shadow Complex.

The dreamcast was not stronger than the PS2. When the hell did that happen? The dreamcast failed in sales for whatever reason, but for what short period it was around it kicked all kinds of ass in the game department. The PS2 however became the beast of the gen and ended up with a library that holds up quite nicely all things considered.

after the poor support of the saturn by Sega, 3rd parties werent amused and talked with their feet a lot of big publishers were reluctant to commit to the DC at launch which left sega witha big problem.

Also the format sega chose for the disk wasnt a good idea either especially at a time piracy was rampant on the PS1.

Dreamcast failed because Sega ran themselves into the financial rocks with the Saturn, and just didn't have enough money in the bank to make a sustained effort with the Dreamcast. Console sales were just not where they needed to be in Japan and software sales were not enough worldwide to make up for the losses Sega was incurring on the hardware at the time. That's why they announced they were canceling the Dreamcast back in 2001 and decided to go third party, which has only been mediocre at best since Sammy bought them out. Another reason for the failure of the Dreamcast was the fear of Sega dropping support...which it inevitably did. As proven in the past with the 32X, the Sega CD, the Sega Game Gear, and the Sega Saturn, Sega just could not compete with Nintendo, and later, Sony. Despite having the most superior system on the market at the time(and I will stand by that), Sega just did not feel that it could keep up with Sony and Nintendo.

Games

As far as hardware goes

Dreamcast>PS2

Saturn>PS1

mr-krinkles

Poor Sayga. Why no support? Development costs relatively high since it was released early? WHY DID SATURN PHAIL?

Saturn failed because it was hard to program for.

It failed because it didn't have enough great games and it didn't have the dual analog sticks that everyone loved so much.

I can only hope sega release a new console so it can stick all it's super great Sonic 3d games on it and superb games like the Conduit. Oh wait.

Sega is like Woody Harrelson in Kingpin. Amazing early on but now just a drunk with one hand. And the person who took that hand, sony, is dominating.

i think if Dreamcast had time to really explore its capabilities, it could've been impressive, but i think that RE4 and MGS3 prove that the PS2 was probably better in the hardware department

^^This.

Sony probably spent more on advertising the PS2 then Sega spent in total on the Dreamcast. It's hard to compete when your competition can outspend you 3-4 times over.

myke2010

It's not for Nintendo. ;)

The N64 wasn't the colossal failure the Saturn was. Nintendo still made a nice little profit that gen.

I was talking about the Wii, MS and Sony can definitely outspend Nintendo, actually I think they already have.

2 questions as in topic. Want some answers!

mr-krinkles

Answer 1: Not really, but it was close to.

Answer 2:

5 factors

1. Internal Struggle between Japan and US offices

2. Hype from the PS2

3. Piracy

4. Microsoft's entry into the console market

5. Debts since the Saturn

LOL does it matter TBH they both looked horrible compared to the GC and Xbox ghost392
I find it funny how you think the DC and PS2 look horrible compared to the GC and Xbox yet at the same time think the Wii looks fine compared to the 360 and PS3.

No it wasn't more powerful, not in most ways at least. Why did it fail? because it didn't have sony's finantial backing for marketing and a build in DVD drive wich had people buying a PS2 to watch movies while they waited for good games to come out for a year.

As for games. Thats one thing the Dreamcast did NOT lack in at all. The dreamcast had one hell of a library for its short time being around then after soon i believe most of its good games were ported over to the PS2 once it died out.

Skies Of Arcadia (one of my fav RPGS ever)

Grandia II ( I believe this appeared on the PS2 months later)

House Of The Dead

Tokyo Xtreme Racer

Crazy Taxi

Jet Grind Radio

Space Channel 5 (great game it was silly but fun lol)

Shenmue

Phantasy Star Online (some of my best times online)

Power Stone

Soul Calibur

Dead or Alive 2

Marvel Vs Capcom 2

Sonic Adventures

Even the sports 2k series was great. The dreamcast was awesome to me it deserves more credit than its recieving in this thread.

Whoaa...RE4 on PS2? Excuse me but wasn't that initialy released on the GC and then later ported to the PS2 ?? Lets look at this more carefully...... Okay... so a port of a GC game that is inferior to the excellent original is proof that the Dreamcast was/is less of a console than the PS2?
