  • Half-Life
  • Starcraft/Broodwar
  • Ocarina of Time
  • Resident Evil 2
  • Metal Gear Solid
  • Xenogears
  • Pokemon Red & Blue
  • Sonic Adventure* (Telekill caught my mistake! Sonic came out in 1999 for US. 1998 was Japan)
  • Spyro the Dragon
  • Baldur's Gate
  • Fallout 2
  • Need for Speed III: Hot Pursuit
  • Marvel VS Capcom
  • Tom Clancy's Rainbow Six
  • Grim Fandango
  • Thief
  • Turok 2
  • Tomb Raider III
  • Mario Party
  • Suikoden II
  • Banjo Kazooie
  • Panzer Dragoon Saga
  • Parasite Eve
  • South Park
  • F-Zero X
  • Unreal

Damn, those were truly great times. Square knew how to make great RPGs. Kojima could write coherent plot lines. There were only 150 Pokemon. Sonic was fun. Companies came out with truly original titles. Sequels were actually good. Everything wasn't dominated by shooters. You can call a game Banjo Kazooie. Half-Life.

...Can you find a better year than that?

1998 was the year I've gotten PS1. July 28 with Resident Evil 2 to be exact and yes, I'd say years 1997-99 were the best PS1 years and I feel great nostalgia about it. Btw don't forget Medievil.

2007 has Stalker, Crysis, TF2, HL2 EP2, Witcher, world in conflict etc all quality PC title

it was best PC year ever too.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2007_in_video_gaming

basically it was bigger than 1998 in term of quality but it also start streamlined as COD4 become most successful and start ruining industry.

also 1998 has lot of overrated games too like Ocarina of time. it was terrible.

All boring dudebro fps's LOL.

Slight correction. Sonic Adventure came out in 1999 at the launch of Dreamcast. 1998 was a good year though.

My personal favorite year in gaming thus far is 2009. Resident Evil 5 and Uncharted 2 came out. Both were really good with Uncharted 2 becoming my favorite game of all time and considering that Uncharted and RE are a couple of favorite series... or used to be in RE's case... it makes sense why I hold 2009 above other years.

I'm not taking anything away from doom, but that one game alone does not make 1993 the greatest year for gaming.

Indeed, there has to be more than that.

1996 is a good contender, see comment above. It introduced massive franchises and well known additions to franchises.

Is indeed a very good year. But still no anywhere close to '98 imo

2005 if you ask me:-

-Resident Evil 4

-God of War

-Haunting Ground

-NFS Most Wanted

-Shadow of The Colossus

-Fahrenheit

-FEAR

-Call of Duty 2

-Quake 4

-Tekken 5 (2005 right? )

-Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks

-Perfect Dark Zero

-Psychonauts

Plus, entering the seventh generation, with the mind-blowing Xbox 360.

98 must've been greet, but the thing is, I only owned an SNES back then, and missed all of those games at 98.Though I played those on the PlayStation in the next years.

Playing Doom. It was unreal for it's time.So many hours into that game. There didn't need to be any other games at the time, it was enough.

"Doom was estimated to be installed on more computers worldwide than Microsoft's new operating system Windows 95, despite million-dollar advertising campaigns for the latter"

The game's popularity prompted Bill Gates to briefly consider buying id Software

The game also defined one of my favorite genre, the FPS.

There are other years with more quality games as a total, like other have posted, but none of those games impacted the industry as whole..in my opinion.

Otherwise I may pick 1999.

Lets just say from 1995 - 2000 was the best 5 years in gaming by far.

The second part of the 90's was indeed amazing.

Most of us were also a lot younger, I'm sure nostalgia has a lot to do with it too though.
