Gabe Newell Speaks On Recent VAC Controversy: "Trust Us"

"If 'Valve is evil - look they are tracking all of the websites you visit' is an idea that gets traction, then that is to the benefit of cheaters and cheat creators," says Newell.

Earlier in the week, the folks over at the Counter-Strike: Global Offensive subreddit discovered some potentially disturbing information about Valve's anti-cheat system, VAC. Specifically, a new module for the system can read all the web domains you have visited while it is running, and send that information back to Valve's servers. Basically, people were concerned that Valve was checking out what porn sites they'd been looking at.

Now, Valve-boss-that-is-not-really-Valve-boss Gabe Newell has weighed in on the matter, assuring fans that no, Valve is not looking at your porn, and offered a rare insight into how VAC works in an attempt to regain our trust.

First, he explained the reasoning for the new VAC protocol. "Cheat developers have a problem in getting cheaters to actually pay them for all the obvious reasons, so they start creating DRM and anti-cheat code for their cheats. These cheats phone home to a DRM server that confirms that a cheater has actually paid to use the cheat." So, VAC needed to be able to look for the DRM servers in the DNS cache in order to find these cheats.

Second, he said that this protocol isn't actually in use anymore. Whenever VAC makes a new protocol, it's basically an "arms-race" for the cheaters to try and circumvent it, which is why Valve is so secretive about how VAC works in the first place. Newell says that the cheat providers have already worked around this particular protocol by manipulating the DNS cache of their customers' client machines.

Lastly, Newell urges us to put our trust in Valve, as if people start to get the wrong idea about the company, the only ones who will benefit are the cheat creators. "If 'Valve is evil - look they are tracking all of the websites you visit' is an idea that gets traction, then that is to the benefit of cheaters and cheat creators," he says.

"We try really hard to earn and keep your trust."

So what do you say, do you trust Valve to scour through your DNS cache, and not out you to your friends for looking at weird porn?

I wonder how hermits are going to take Valve spying on them. They're going to know all your fap pages LoL.

Seriously tho this is a total violation of privacy no different than EA using Origin to scan your PC for so called pirated games.

What's worse?

Valve spy or Kinect spy?

Either way...thhbo.

Your still beating a dead horse and you fail at it.

Probably the same way they take just about every organisation under the sun spying on them such as Facebook, the American government etc. This just adds yet another company to a growing list. Not that I condone it, but pretty much everything we're doing on the internet is being watched by someone so what's another added to the list?

If that's the case then this is even more of a stupid thread, most people I know will just alt tab out and use a proper browser.

You know what you're right. Also there are starving kids all over the world so why bother giving a few something to eat? Lets just shut down charities altogether because hey whats a few more hungry kids added to the list.

Do you see the fallacy in your argument or do I need to be more sarcastic? You are the worst kind of fanboy one that will blindly defend anything no matter how absurd or wrong it is.

Notice how I said I don't condone it, try having some reading comprehension.

You asked for an argument, I gave one. Your reading skills really do amuse me, it's like arguing with a 10 year old.

You said you didn't condone it but than tried to brush it off as "Well other people are doing it" Which is grade school reasoning. Just because other people are doing it doesn't mean we should turn a blind eye in fact far from it.

and then you ignore my last part of my comment in predictable fashion. Address the whole post next time. You're talking about grade school reasoning yet in all my discussions with you, you are seemingly unable of holding a decent debate.

Valve is late to this party, but the more the merrier I say. I've got some good sites to check out

I ignored it because it was irrelevant and noting more than a pointless insult if not an ironic one. Now you seem to trying to avoid the topic. "Well other people are doing it" is a grade school argument, not that expected much more from you.

Not surprising. Valve is secretly just as evil as EA and MS. Their company depends on microtransactions. Im not shocked they're lying crooks just like all hermits.

#15 Posted by jer_1 (7451 posts) -

I'd worry a hell of a lot more of microsoft spying on me than I would ever worry about Valve. Hell Valve is one of the few "good guys" in the gaming scene in my books.

Not that bit, reading comprehension is key here, that bit was thrown in for pure fun. The first sentence, now please do try again, your ability of ignoring key parts of posts really does amuse me.

I was referring to the first part, I cut out the end for the same reason tho. You obviously have no intentions of addressing the point or the topic, and have resorted in a lame troll attempt to hide the fact you're getting owned and basically owned yourself with grade school logic. Oddly enough a person who accuses others of being unable to hold a debate is completely unable to hold one himself. I don't think I need to respond to you anymore (ever), you lost and your idiocy is getting tiresome.

good day.

and yet again, you can't hold an argument to save your life, the reason for my argument was right there. You asked for an argument, I presented one, it's quite amusing that a simple concept such as that is going over your head. Since it did, I'll explain, one can present an argument that they don't actually believe in, that's the fun of this place, though it seems like you take this place quite seriously so that may go over your head.

If you want a rebuttal then you'd actually have to come up with a decent argument against what was originally said.Your original statement went on about starving children which to be honest, to compare people spying on the internet to starving children is completely inane in the first place as one is actually a serious issue to other is a much lesser issue (I hope I don't need to tell you which is which). Then you went to attack me as the argument that was presented isn't in line with your own, much like my previous discussion with you, you are unable to see that there are multiple points of view to a certain topic. Your dismissal is based on your own point of view to which you view anyone with a differing belief as an idiot and thus showing your lack of debating skills as you are not accepting of other's views.

You're trying to call me an idiot yet all you do is say I'm wrong and so far have been unable to actually show that and for the most part just ignore anything that goes against your beliefs.

I don't know what is worse... the actual problem (which is minor at best) of the overexagurating peasant fools that are blowing this out of proportion to make it "System Wars material" ... I guess you fools should stop using the internet then.

I mean you all clearly think your porn collection or browser history is actually worth ANYONE's time reading.

What I have learned from news storys like this... people what they look at is actual important and that anyone gives a s*it.

special snowflakes... everywhere.

GabeN is all about weird porn..

The days of privacy have been over for awhile. Its not a battle anyone is going to win at this point in technology so its better to see how you can use that to your advantage

Valve have done everything to earn my trust and nothing to lose it, unlike MS and Sony. To paraphrase an Everton slogan IGWT (In Gabe We trust).

I do think this is something they should reverse. I was actually thinking of learning how to hack for the only reason of understanding how to notice it happening and a general idea of the skill level involved. I have no plans of actually hacking.

with that all said, how is this system wars?

There is ZERO ownership in intellectual property. only license to use. But this is a reality and you are far from it.

If you actually bother to read Newell's response Valve didn't record all your website information and they have already moved on to another anti-cheat measure as this one was overcome. I guess if this somehow makes you feel like consoles are superior to PCs or something then more power to you. Doesn't make any sense to me though.
