USGamer: Atlus, make Persona 5 about BDSM

The possibilities are endless. Which is simultaneously appropriate and ironic thing for me to say, I guess, given that we're discussing the sticky issue of slavery. But now that you've mentioned, I'd actually like to see Atlus attempt to address something like BDSM -- mostly because I want to see a franchise of considerable popularity do right by the scene. I won't lie. This is because of Fifty Shades of Grey, a book I utterly abhored due to its worryingly one-dimensional portrayal of a D/s (dominant/submissive) relationship. Atlus, I suspect, could probably do way better. Pfft. Speculations aside, I just want Persona 5 to happen already. It's one of the few properties I unabashedly fangirl. Whatever Atlus ends up throwing at us, I suspect I'd be pleased and hopelessly riveted for days to come.

I give up guys, I just give up.

I also want to point out, the rest of the article is actually a pretty fun read, and it's some good speculation.

But that bit was, well, interesting.

Didn't they already have that in P4?

#4 Posted by Jag85 (4238 posts) -

So I suppose she wants some Fifty Shades of Grey in Persona 5?

fifty shades of piss.

I'd rather not have watersports in my Persona.

I wish Catherine were a JRPG instead of a boring puzzle game. The Persona premise of children playing at killing demons at midnight it's getting boring after 2 very similar games. But as always, the Japanese prefer their 16 years old protagonist and school life stories instead of something more directed at adults like Catherine.

...what's bdsm? Lol

I see through this ruse, and the trap that you have set! >.>

Bondage, domination, submission, and... masochism, I think? It's a very popular kind of sexual roleplay, fetish, and pornography.

Oh, that's easy, I'm a know-it-all, and nothing gets past me. No sireee!

BDSM is an acronym that Persona gamers would recognize:

Bunkichi (& Mitsuko)

Dojima, Ryotaro & Nanako

Satonaka, Chie

Minami, Eri

---

LOL.

@SolidTy: makes no sense, but ok. Haha and I've played the Persona games.

I did my Bestest!

I'm going to ask my ma and pa tomorrow after school about BDSM, see what they know since they played the older Persona games and own all the Shin Megami Tensei games. I'll tell them about my conversation on the internet and they might have a few answers.

I know it's surprising, but they play all the good RPGs. I'm the luckiest boy in the world, imo.

There's already a related franchise of more adult-oriented Persona-type games: Shin Megami Tensei, i.e. Persona's older brother. The Persona series was intended to be a more accessible teen-oriented take on the SMT franchise.

Anyway, there are a ton of Japanese stories centred around adults. JRPG's just so happen to have more teenage protagonists because the average age of the RPG gamer in Japan is lower than in the West. Older Japanese adults tend to have longer working hours, so they usually don't have the time to dedicate to RPG's.

Sorta.

Chie's shadow was a dominatrix.

#14 Posted by Legend500 (125 posts) -

Wow! Isn't this game about teenagers!? Bold, bold move by Atlus. Can't say I remember too much S&M in high school though. Sex was pretty awkward and basic for the first while now that I think about it.

I would rather Atlus make a game about Alan and Nichole from Miiverse.

Now that would capture my interest.

The term BDSM dates back to 1969,[1] however the origin of the term BDSM is unclear, and is believed to have been formed either from joining the term B&D (bondage and discipline) with S&M (sadomasochism or sadism and masochism), or as a compound initialism from B&D, D&S (dominance and submission), and S&M.[citation needed] Regardless of its origin, BDSM is used as a catch-all phrase to include a wide range of activities, forms of interpersonal relationships, and distinct subcultures. BDSM communities generally welcome anyone with a non-normative streak who identifies with the community; this may include cross-dressers, extreme body mod enthusiasts, animal players, latex or rubber aficionados, and others[citation needed].

Persona 3/4 don't have the same premise. Why do constantly talk about things you know nothing about?

A game after my heart.

Hey, half of Silent Hill 2 was probably about BDSM (or BDSM fantasies) so why not?

In all seriousness, I don't see that concept working as a whole premise for an RPG.

Update: I talked to my parents when I got home from school. After earning a cookie from the cookie jar, I asked mom. She immediately called for Dad...we ended up having a long two hour conversation. They also checked what internet site I was discussing BDSM. It turns out the term is older than the storied Persona games.

Needless to say, the term much different than I thought it would be. I think your parents might know too, but what I learned today I can't discuss on the internet. Good luck.

They rather teach me hands on than throw me to the worldly wolves, so to speak.

The material made me feel funny (bonafide frown?!)....maybe I will like scary sex in a decade, but right now I'm just not into what I saw.

@SolidTy: I'm really sorry you had to go through that... blame Chaz.

I want a video game where we all dress up in animal costumes and rub up against each other until we are all satisfied.

Haha. I guess he's into Kinky RPGs...perhaps that's a new genre of gaming coming to this upcoming generation.

So did the author come by the BDSM scene because of Shades? Because that would just be sad.

Agreed. At this point, I consider them unbreakable chains that shackle our passion...for this game.

As my Uncle Fester used to say, "Don't ask, but please Do tell."
