US Army using Xbox 360 controller in Future Combat

The US Army recently conducted its first live-fire exercise using Future Combat Systems technologies and equipment, including what appears to be anti-sniper bot RedOwl. The assortment of robotics and unmanned vehicles are controlled, in part, by modified Xbox 360 controllers, which look to be wired into Cross-Com devices straight outta GRAW. What?! The military didn't budget for wireless controllers? That's, like, sooo last-gen...

But seriously, how far could FCS technology evolve? Will future American soldiers be judged by how fast they can work their thumbs? Will boot camp become a LAN lab? Will combat become as distant as an Xbox Live deathmatch?

I watched Future Weapons some time ago. and they were using the Xbox 360 controller to control the robot. which was pretty cool.

EDIT: also wireless controller would be pretty anoying for them. because the battery pack on the back would make it hard for them to hold if you have big hands and ur wearing gloves which can make it worse. and what if the battery ran out while using the robot. ;)

Why not have robots and mechs to do the job for you? And control them via controller? Much easier.Riviera_Phantom

It's too expensive and robot technology is not advanced enough to take on humans.

They're probably using wired controllers because wireless signals can easily be jammed, making wireless controllers useless.

And the reason why those soldiers have devices on similar to the Cross-Com in G.R.A.W. is that UbiSoft copied the prototype technology of the Land Warrior next-generation infantry program for the Ghosts in that game.

Navy uses Super Nintendos I kid you not for some Shooting Practices. Special made nintendo games etc for training with a Replica rifle etc that hooks into the controller slot.

Used it in my navy training. we gotta learn how to shoot rifles too ;)

Thats just wrong as if Super Armored Tanks and Nukes weren't enough now the American soldiers don't even have to leave there bunks to pawn their enemies. I feel so sorry for those poor terrorists how bad can it feel to be killed by a Xbox controllers. 

Thats just wrong in so many ways. War shouldn't be made into a video game, think about the poor guys taking the beating by those controller manned robots.

Once the keyboard attachment comes out they will probably try that out.

well, the tech in GRAW is based off real life prototype army tech. so im not suprised. game controllers are designed to give accessibilty to controls and comfort. plus the 360 controller is big enough so the gloved hand(soldiers have to wear gloves) wont hit other buttons.

Gotta get through the Koreans with their Battlefield Strategists (Starcraft Players) and their zerg headshot infantry (Counterstrike players).  I think the Americans will be getting owned at Future Combat.

my hdd is from korea and the system is from china

microsoft is an american company, its easier for the US to buy american products and improve our economy instad of helping out other places.
