Ubisoft first revealed Watch Dogs long before the new generation of consoles were even formally announced, but the studio says even in the early stages their vision for it was very aligned with Sony's plans for the PlayStation 4.

"Creating the game on PS4 was fascinating," creative director Jonathan Morin said, in an interview on the PlayStation EU Blog. "It was uncanny to see that Watch Dogs was so close to what Sony wanted to do with the console. So Sony understood what we were doing with the game. We were a really great match."

For example, game designer Danny Belanger noted that integrating multiplayer into the single-player was well in-line with some of Sony's PS4 design pillars: notably, a social, integrated experience. He also said the increased horsepower let them realize more factors vital to building an open world, like lighting and water effects, and the amount of people present in the crowded streets of Chicago. The touch pad on the DualShock is also being used to imitate the ease of a smartphone, which serves as protagonist Aiden's Pearce's main tool.

"From an animation point of view we’re always running out of memory, especially when you start developing towards the end of a console generation, so PS4 allowed things like reduced animation compression and more variety in civilians," added animation director Colin Graham. "From my point of view it’s a bit like working with an unlimited budget because we can’t fill the memory budget on PS4."

Watch Dogs is due on May 27, though Ubisoft may be planning a beta test before launch. Ubisoft's Jonathan Morin recently said it will take about 40 hours to complete, on average.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I feel bad for the Xbox One. Unlike the PS3 that fixed the multiplatform inferiority after about 2 years (once developers figured out the Cell processor), the Xbox One will have inferior multiplatform games for the entire generation. Not only that, but the inferiority on Xbox One is unlike anything ever seen on PS3 vs 360. The Xbox One versions are actually majorly inferior, not just slight differences like we saw last gen.

Last generation, Xbox relied solely on multiplats to get by because they didn't have the exclusives. Once PS3 evened the playing field with multiplats and started releasing versions on par with the 360, paired with the fact that they started churning out top quality exclusive after exclusive, Sony was able to pass the 360 in total sales just by outperforming them.

This generation, Xbox One will have the least amount of exclusives, the vastly inferior version of every multiplat, the higher price tag, the weaker system and a forced peripheral that no one wants. This system is in trouble.

Microsoft knows it's in trouble. Microsoft is very worried that they're getting the worst version of every multiplatform game. This is why they keep on delivering empty promises like DX12 this, ESRAM that, always saying things will get better. They're scared and they know things aren't going to get better, they're just trying to lie and get people to believe things will get better.

Go ahead and bump this thread 5 years from now and I guarantee you things will not have gotten better.

Did you actually read the article for what it is?

He is saying the end result aligned perfectly with Sonys vision of the console.

The game was in development before PS4 was announced and it was targeted on last gen hardware.

Of course PS4 will feel like wide open spaces.

You are reading too much into the article.

I love the PS4 too, but good lord man!

Seriously, this seems to be the case. Still, it's ark, so expect pics of himself to prove something or other, that nobody cares about.

Yeah and Ubi woke up and realized they couldn't accomplish what they set out to do....hence the downgrade....it's all the PS4's fault.

#8 Posted by arkephonic (6208 posts) -

A developer would NEVER say something bad about a system that the game is releasing on before release, it would only hurt sales. The fact that they make no mention of the Xbox One says it all. Not to mention, he mentions power and memory, 2 things that the Xbox One lacks. GPU and that DDR3 RAM are 2 of the biggest culprits for these inferior multiplats releasing on the One. He even pours salt in the wounds by talking about touch pad integration. Where's the Kinect integration?

Yep, because PCs have never run games at 1080p @ 60fps and looked better than current gen games using DDR3..........with a weaker GPU.

Your arguments make no sense. The ONLY reason a PC game would never beat a console game in graphics would be outdated drivers and you have to turn the settings way down to get the thing running.

And what use does Kinect have in a game like this? Voice commands? Come on dude, a touch pad just makes logical sense. No one uses kinect in regular games for anything other than voice commands or the occasional facial recognition.

Multiplats are inferior because MS rushed the design and THEN changed at the last minute. ESRAM isnt new so it isnt that, DDR3 has been doing 1440p @ 120fps for a while. Its down to MS and the crappy DX11 drivers on a system most likely built for DX12.

It's already been talked about to death on these boards that DX12 will have a substantial effect on PC but close to no effect on consoles due to their optimization and streamlined design to only perform specific tasks. Plus, I think you're giving PC a little bit too much credit here. Yeah, PC is the best system for gaming and the most powerful, but you're making it sound like you can go buy a $15 PC at a thrift store and have it outperform PS4 in Battlefield 4. Consoles get more out of hardware than PCs do. If you put the exact same cpu, gpu and ram in a console and a PC side by side, the console will get better performance because of the optimization. The simple fact that PC is an open platform with so many processes to take into consideration naturally make it get less out of the hardware.

My point was that your argument is false.

Saying that DDR3 and the GPU was responsible for the inferior multipats is just plain false, and im speaking from first hand experience.

I build PCs for family and friends. DDR3 is perfectly capable of handling 1080p, and in some stuations up to 1440p. It depends on the game, the engine, developer, and most of all you drivers and system resources. (FRAPS, etc)

Xbox One's GPU is ahead of previous gens high end GPUs, so is PS4s. Not to mention both are customized and have the luxury of being in a closed and controlled environment.

You keep saying these things as fact with very little knowledge of how computer components work with software, or even how much your specs even matter.

CPU and GPU isnt the One's problem. Neither is ESRAM.

Im my professional opinion?

Id say the drivers that control the ESRAM, the GPU/CPU, and the OS in itself werent final at launch and rushed to make the holiday season.

My proof. MS has updated the system so much since launch...........even the controller has had a patch.

XB1 was built for DX12.......only it wasnt ready.

If you would wake up from your fanboyism you would enjoy gaming a lot more.

So what you're saying is, if the Wii U just got teh proper drivers, it would smash the PS4? lol k.

Yes........thats what i said....

Nowhere did i say the XB1 would beat PS4 or anything of the sort.

Your point was that it was weak, hand inferior multiplats, and couldnt do 1080p/60fps.

My point was that it was untrue and the PC was my evidence.

How in the world did you get me saying XB1 would beat PS4 out of that?

Where did i say it would have better graphics? Better anything?

I own both so it doesnt matter to me, but i WILL say that Ryse looks better than anything out right now, and yes i own Infamous SS.

Will PS4 beat Ryse? Absolutely, but my point is that they are comparable in specs. 360 had the better GPU last gen and was easier to program for..........yet no game looked better than The Last of Us (IMO). Its about what you do with it.

Not to mention XB1 is DX12 capable.

Im just saying the XB1 isnt weak by any stretch. Weaker than PS4 in specs? Of course, but in practice is another story.

All multiplats this gen are a good match for PS4.

Is that why every multiplat runs worse on Xbone lol?

Wait a minute, I never said that XB1 couldn't do 1080p/60fps. I know more about graphics and hardware than you're giving me credit for. I do own a really really nice gaming PC that I put together myself. I've been playing PC games my entire life and I'm 29. I know how graphical settings work, and resolution is just one of them. If you were to lower the textures, model quality, shadows, lighting, anti-aliasing, antistropic filtering, ambient occlusion, v-sync, and whatever else you wanted to lower or remove completely, you could get any game on Xbox 1 to run at 1080p and 60fps. I've played with graphical settings on PC before, and when I need to start lowering too many things to achieve 1080p and 60fps, that's when I upgrade and buy a new computer.

I see a lot of PS3/360 comparisons, but these situations aren't similar. The 360 had a nicer video card and more RAM than the PS3, but the PS3 had a nicer processor. Despite these advantages, none of them were even remotely significant, they were slight. The advantages that the PS4 has over the Xbox One in regards to GPU and RAM are far, far more significant than anything seen last gen.

That bold part is utter bullsh** unless you are talking PC running games with 360 or a little better graphic,DDR3 isn't use on GPU for years, only low end GPU use DDR3 and for a reason is not fast enough for today's games bandwidth depends on speed of the memory and width of the bus,DDR3 with its current speed isn't a match for GDDR5 this is common knowledge and is the reason why even low end GPU like the 7770 use GDDR5 and not DDR3.

Your professional opinion is very wrong,ESRAM is a problem and there is no driver that will fix that, just like there was nothing that could fix the EDRAM small size on 360,it was to small and ESRAM is to small without sacrifices it can't run games at the same resolution as the PS4,worse the GPU is also weaker and has 6 CU less which is more than you think, there is a bigger gap in CU between the xbox one and PS4 and between the 7850 and 7870.

Sony drivers weren't final either and SDK get updates all generation long in both platforms,MS had a 10% GPU reservation which they are lifting the xbox one had power relative to a 7770,not matter how big is the bandwidth the GPU doesn't have what it takes and MS has been totally dishonest with their user base and they continue to be,no matter what if you want a 7770 to run as fast at the same resolution of a 7850 you will have to give up something this if a FACT and you people should admit this and move on,is funny how you love the PS4 but you are always doing pro xbox argument is sad dude you are not fooling any one..

PS4's RAM is 8GB GDDR5? Seriously? I didn't know people could be that f'ing stupid. GDDR, the G stands for 'graphics', as in memory developed for graphics cards or GDDR3, GDDR4,GDDR5 and so on. For system memory, as in memory developed specifically for system chipset, it's just DDR. And currently, the best available is DDR3. I'd say, Sony is full of bullshit then, lying to people. Newsflash, PS4 has only 2GB of DDR3 RAM. The 8GB GDDR5 dedicated for graphics to run games at only 1080P is just..,, awful.. and pathetic.

Are you both stupid?

Ubisoft offered additional content for some of their games, specifically, all of the Assassin's Creeds from Brotherhood to Black Flag......and all of that additional content was only available on PS3.

No but you seem to be stupid. Insults and you wonder why we don't get along? Exclusive content is paid for dude....not given away.

What?? The 8GB GDDR5 is both system memory and graphics memory. It's shared memory, and it has no problems handling both system and graphics. The 2Gb DDR3 is actually just 256MB of memory for the extra processor for background tasks.

@Martin_G_N: Shared memory.. Hmm... If I'm not mistaken I wrote "dedicated" up there.. That means either the GPU or system RAM leeches from each other if needed. Which also mean it's a shared memory. You don't have to tell things I've already mentioned.

Technically, it's a no go. Game developers will have trouble optimizing the best graphics setting to run games at 1080P. Sure, the memory helps running games at higher resolution which is 1080P, but the draw/view distance, texture & shadow resolution will be crappy. Specially with large open-world games.

Based on raw power, PS4 kicks XBone easily. But the memory? It's like, having a PC with AMD A8 CPU, armed with a Jaw-dropping 8GB of VRAM Radeon HD7790 but there's only 2GB of RAM.

we don't even know the exact amount of RAM in the PS4. Having dedicated memory is a troublesome

The PS4 has 8GB GDDR5 of unified memory, just like what the developers wanted, and similar like what the X1 has, except the X1 has the slower DDR3. The developers can choose how much they use for system memory, and graphics. And again, the 2 Gigabit of DDR3 in the PS4 is actually just 256MB for the extra processor used for background tasks.

I'm expecting some good things from watch dogs. not as good as infamous, but still decent

@Martin_G_N: Which is just fire and forget programming, brute force if you prefer. ESRAM (and to a greater extent, EDRAM) theoretically allows to ease the strain data processing puts on RAM, freeing it up for more important things.

PS3 is just badly built architecture, and I think a lot of people would agree with it. Today's gaming industry isn't about pushing for the best graphics (technically true if you interpret it as pushing the hardware). It's about increasing profit margins by decreasing cost to port engines, aka using one unified architecture, which means PowerPC is left in the dust.

All multiplats this gen are a good match for PS4.

Im just saying the XB1 isnt weak by any stretch. Weaker than PS4 in specs? Of course, but in practice is another story.

Is that why every multiplat runs worse on Xbone lol?

Again, i meant weak in general, not compared to PS4. Good lord you guys read into everything. Stop being so defensive. Its a games console not a girlfriend!

Its ok not all of us are stupid.

You are right, RAM is not holding this game back, to think it is is truly a lack of knowledge of hardware. you don't need more than friggin 4GB RAM to run this damn crappy ubisoft sandbox game. and thats talking from a PC standpoint.

Its the gpu that is the limiting factor with xbox. that is all, its that simple.

The RAM differences are a joke.

My PS4 copy of WD is already paid for. Hope it delivers. Now I just have to wait till May 27

Looks awesome both the game as the visuals. I really like the dark tone to it. A human traffic theme is somethin we havent seen in games before.
