Forza Motorsport and a few other racing games have a feature called 'gameplay rewind'. Basically as soon as you make a mistake you can press a button and it rewinds the game back a few seconds so you get another shot not to make that same mistake again.

Should every single game have this? So your fighting Bowser at the end with no mushrooms left and one of his fireballs barely nip you and kill you. Instead of having to redo the whole dungeon to fight him again, you can just rewind the game a few seconds and dodge the fireball.

Is it time gameplay rewind is a standard feature in all games? Will it reinvent the way we play games like the automatically replenishing power power?

I can see it become popular like replenishing health.

Not a big fan myself. I don't know of a game in which I would like it best. For example: I like how Bayonetta 2 does it for that type of game. And Shadow of Mordor for its type of game. I don't think a rewind button would be better than those systems in those games.

But if it is integrated into the story/gameplay like in Sands of Time then it can be very cool.

It's so dumb. If games had that in the snes days I wouldn't have so many fond memories and they would have lost their appeal quickly. Learning the patterns, memorizing boss abilities, treading carefully, preserving items.

Instead of learning from your mistakes, they built in a cheat for you to erase them. I understand that you don't have to use it, but most people will and do. This younger generation can't even be bothered to learn turns in a track or the controls of their car anymore, just use the rewind. Now they want it in every game...

Let's just watch games on YouTube instead of playing them.

Let's just take all of the challenge out of the game while we are at it. Skip the middle man.

I soon as I got Forza I turned that off, just for the extra credit bonus. Its not really something I want in my racing games. But its nice thats its there for the ones who need it. I can see why its there for racing games, but for other game genres it would just feel out of place.

Oh I've been giving this some though and this feature would be more than useless in a puzzle game. Since time is not a factor there.

This should turn out to be an interesting battle between lazy "new school" gamers who don't want to put any actual effort into anything, and hardcore "old school" gamers who believe that you should lose a finger every time your man dies.

Both sides will argue and argue for pages upon pages. Everybody will fail to realize that the answer is actually simple: it works for some games and not others.

In racing games, yes I think it will become standard. Grid 2 also has this feature (it looks very nice too).

For other genres? Abso-fucking-lutely not.

many gamers today hate trial and error..they hate being frustrated during a video game when the reason for even playing in the first place is to relax and have fun.

Ha, I'm the opposite in Forza Horizon 2. I have all the assists turned off, including rewind. The only "assist" I use is automatic transmission but using manual transmission on a gamepad is a suicide - only on racing wheel does it make sense.

I never use it. If I screw up, I want to start from the beginning to feel like I have accomplished something. Racing games are about precision, and rewinding takes a lot from trying to perfect that precision.

Replenishing health allows significantly faster pacing for the single player campaign; rewinding is more like an appeasement that really doesn't affect the gameplay design unless it's built upon that mechanic. It's not detrimental at all, but it's still not significant enough to be something that important.

It might need to be implemented in a few more games/genres, but I doubt standard would be a good thing. Sometimes the "start over" thing is part of the experience. Pushmo has a rewind feature too, and it makes sense because it's a puzzle game - you've already solved the puzzle up until that point, just because you slipped up doesn't mean you should do something you already know how to do again.

This is something I picked up on a while back... In many Racing games if you don't come 1st then you lose, so if you come 2nd you lose, 3rd you lose.

Theres something wrong with the way racing games are designed.... I can't quite put my finger on it though.
