“There’s some really large dungeons. I guess some of them offer 1H+ game time, depending on how good you are with combat, how thoroughly you explore them (SECRETS!!!) and how well you cope with being in utter darkness for an extended period of time.”

As long as they don't drag out, I don't mind the longer dungeons as long they're compelling and the payoff is good.

Honestly, this game just sounds too ambitious for its own good. I'm not doubting the talent of CD Projeckt, but even The Witcher 2 had some janky stuff compared to most triple A games. Them making a huge open world game bigger then Skyrim and "30" times bigger then The Witcher 2 just sounds like a bunch of crap to me.

I should be incredibly excited for this game, but I just have a feeling that this game will end up collapsing under its own weight.

Feel the same way. Sounds good on paper, but at he same time it seems like mission impossible. Excited to try the game and find out though.

Yeah it sounds really ambitious, and this is their first attempt at an open world RPG. Bethesda are veterans when it comes to open worlds games.

I hope the dungeons are really challenging and offer a good reward. The problem with Oblivion and Skyrim is that the dungeons are too easy, too samey and drawn out and the reward is always shit.

The Witcher 3 is a fraction of the size of Daggerfall.

Eldar Scrolls games have gotten smaller with each iteration (not sure how true that is for Oblivion and Skyrim tbh) which suugests to me that Bethesda have realised they don't need to put as much in a game for them to get more money out. CD:PR on the other hand still want to prove to everyone, including themselves, that what they can do is better or at least as good as any other RPG developer.

Will they be able to do 1 hour long dungeons without it dragging out.

I am getting increasingly worried about this game. But hearing devs gloat about how big stuff bring back bad memories of Dragon Age: Origins, a game that had more padding than an insecure woman's bra.

When it comes to size.

I'd be surprised. The only games I played in recent memory that come close to Zelda in terms of level design are Darksiders/II.

1H "gametime"?

Does that mean an hour in how fast time passes in game.....or was that a slip of the tongue?

I'm all for big dungeons....lets just hope they aren't boring.

@mr_huggles_dog:

I believe 1hr refers to how long it'll take the average player to complete all the quests (side & main) associated with said dungeon like idk think MMOs:

  • kill 100 x mobs
  • Slay secret boss
  • Find hidden passage
  • Escort xyz from point A to Point B
  • so on and so on

Lets not be overzealous here people. It isn't going to be anything remotely entertaining for all or casuals. If anything they are just copying the tropes of other games and it will feel more like a grind for those wanting to just finish the story. For completionist, this is a warm welcome and great addition.

I paid for this game months ago and now I'm not entirely certain I'll play it.

Suppose that's what I deserve.

The mission structuring in these games is still derived from GTAIII - that's a problem if you ask me. This developer, to me, has bizarre priorities in their game design.

The concept itself is inherently fun. However, most games lack any sense of threat or foreboding, their also seems to be a misconception that a dungeon should be small and tight.

Same here. I would've preferred them to improve upon second game instead of going open world. But back then everyone was treating Skyrim as the next big thing, which inspired a lot of devs to go open world.

If they are so long i hope the will atleast be fun and cool to look around in, not like those falmer caves in Skyrim that were littered by the most boring enemies .-.

That combat better not be shit like it is in Witcher 1 and 2 if they plan on having dungeons that long.

I dunno, I kind of felt the structure in TW2 was a bit problematic. For example there was a forest which was basically just an eight-shaped path and so on. It did hurt immersion. Adding wilderness and a horse is a positive thing IF they can pull it off, which we don't know yet. Given Geralts profession it should be reaonably easy to fill the world with sensible stuff to do. I hope they don't go overboard with the filling though and more use the world as a backdrop for mood and immersion.

One thing that do worry me (and in that I agree with you) is that some of the dungeons in TW2 allready felt very generic. It seems almost impossible that they have been able to scale up this fast and at the same time achieved a more handcrafted feel.

There was plenty of room for improvements in Witcher 2 but as I said they should've IMPROVED upon that instead of changing the entire direction. You know why? Because the main strength of Witcher games had always been its storyline and open world structure may hurt that as well. Back then when everyone was praising Skyrim for its open world, a lot of gamers (like myself) preferred Witcher 2 because of its Storyline and dark atmosphere.
