We are 2 years into the consoles life cycle and they haven't added the ability to play a fucking CD. Is it important to the success of the console? No it's not. But I'm at a loss as to why the PS4 has gone backwards in so many ways compared to it's predecessors. There's a comment I read in response to some shill who said CD's are outdated tech on some random forum that sums it up for me:

http://forums.digitalspy.co.uk/showpost.php?p=78164414&postcount=25

"If they could just include everything then they can win, PC's don't have this issue, you don't get a brand new Intel Core I7 with 16 GB RAM, Windows 7 64bit with 3 TB Hard Drive and a super douper new graphics card and find that you can now not play or rip from CD's anymore on your new Blu-Ray optical drive, in fact you can use whatever older technology you like on it even a floppy drive if you can find the right hardware or driver. It is only proprietary rules and restrictions that prevent them from adding something like CD playback to the powerful PS4 which should be childs play!

The PS3 was a machine where they more or less built on everything that had come before, but the PS4 has actually gone backwards." - Bill Clinton

And he's absolutely right. Shills are making every excuse in the book like ''they wanted to have the right features at launch'' as if CD playback would have somehow fucked them over. And then there's those who say to the post above 'Oh that makes no sense, that's like saying the mega drive can't play cassette tapes but early computers can!' But there's a difference, I can still buy music in CD format these days. In fact I'd say most LP sales are in CD format even today. There's no excuse not to include it.

How is it the PS1, PS2, PS3 could do it and the PS4 can't? How is it that the Xbox, 360 and One can do it? How is it that every other PS release built upon everything that came before, and PS4 has actually gone backwards? So what Bill said.

I mean it's obviously not a massive issue or else people would still be hounding at Sony's door about it, but I just don't like how PS4 launched so anemic compared to other consoles before it. It's a basic feature, it doesn't need taking away.

What do the people think?

They still sell in the millions every year though. Granted mostly the super popular artists but still, they do. And then there's peoples CD collection... look it's a basic feature. It should be implamented.

I can't fathom that someone wouldn't already have something to play audio CDs and would rely on a console to do so.

It can happen. My computer has no CD/DVD drive and my DVD player is in my bedroom. I only have my PS4 in my living room and I do happen to have CD's. iI's a bummer you can't play them on it. I just assumed you could.

It's a basic feature. Next why don't they just take away DVD and Blu-Ray because they likely have a decent Blu-Ray player that does both. There was no need to take the feature away when every Playstation before did it, and still every Xbox does it.

I think it's completely ridiculous and it really annoys me. I want to put all my CDs on my PS4 so I can listen to them while I play, particularly for something like Driveclub.

No one's buying a PS4 to play audio CDs on it. As I said, no one cares.

Playstation is not the way i listen to music CD. When i buy a new CD first thing i do is put it in the PC and rip it to MP3 so i can listen to it on both PC and mobilephone with no CD.

I had to find an audio disc recently. We only found 1 at home. The 25 year anniversary Zelda Orchestra CD.

Honestly, I understand the point you are making, but functionally, it really doesn't matter, especially since the PS4 has Spotify now, as well as a DLNA media player (though that one barely works, from what I have been told).

Eh, what TC is asking for is not that ridiculous. The PS4 has an optical disc drive, CDs are still a viable medium for distribution of music, and the PS3 did (and still does) play audio CDs, so the PS4 is a regression in that regard.

I just don't think it functionally matters as much.

Well they did just get around to adding the ability to watch mp4 files off of a USB drive a few months back. So yeah the PS4 launched missing some basic stuff. Go on their support forums and complain, and maybe they will add the feature at some point. Either that or just use windows media player and convert the files to mp3 format and stick them on a thumb drive.

PS4 is a barebones machine and Sony continue to put little effort into it.

We're paying for PSN now; what are they doing with the money? PSN is still slow, messages are still janky and the PS Store still doesn't load 50% of the time.

They certainly aren't putting the money towards dedicated servers.

Compare this to how much Microsoft have transformed the Xbox One; night and day.

Nice feature, that no one give a **** about in this time and age!!!

If by now you relay on your console to play your cds, something went wrong about 15 years ago...Focuse and try to figure it out.

CD audio?

Audiophiles only listen to .FLAC or vinyl (the former of which they usually rip themselves from the latter).

And the general listening public probably doesn't even know what a compact disc is anymore.

They are regressing, but they aren't dead.

http://www.ifpi.org/facts-and-stats.php

In 2014, the industry’s global digital revenues increased by 6.9 per cent to US$6.85 billion. For the first time, the industry derived the same proportion of revenues from digital channels (46%) as physical format sales (46%).

So yeah digital is closing in on CD's, but half of music sales being CD still means it's a viable platform. There was no excuse to remove CD functionality. Wether you use it or not. That and there are a shit ton of CD back catalogs out there.

I know for those really serious about maintaining a CD collection have expensive dedicated CD players and wouldn't think twice of using a console to play CD's, but even if only one person used the feature, it's the principle of them not including it. Taking away options. They might have even made it so the PS4 laser can't read CD's. If that's so, then PS1 game discs can never work. Again, more options taken away. And that's the biggest issue I'm finding with all of this, why can't the PS4 do anything the PS3 can't other than have better graphics and some share button shite?

@Chutebox said:

It's more about taking away options. I want to keep being able to play DVD's on my consoles because it's a good feature. Many people have CD's, unless you were born in the 21st century.

The ability to play lossless music is essential for audiophiles (and semi audiophiles, such as myself). I have some in flac, but I occasionally purchase CDs of older music.

Its odd that this feature is not implemented. Its a basic feature that people expect to exist, based on past experience. You can't take away features like this. I'm sure they'll add when people start complaining and it rises higher in their queue.

Don't be stupid, Laserdisc is the superior format that it should support.

I'd expect any self-proclaimed "audiophile" would use an actual sound system, not a video game console, for their CD listening.

@lhughey: CDs skip, digital audio is typically compressed, and vinyl wears out. Every format has its downsides.

This isn't even about CD playing being an essential feature, because it's not. The issue is that they are stripping away features on a newer and supposedly better platform. Features that they could have easily implamented. They either intentionally made the laser not read CD's, which means they are cunts. Or they just haven't gotten around to implamenting a basic feature to which they could do in a small update.

It may actually be that the PS4 is physically not able to read CD's. It has a 6x BR / 8x DVD drive but that doesn't necessarily mean that it supports CD playback. For all we know, it might not be able to read a CD at all.

@aroxx_ab seems to be a perfect example of how people use music CD's nowadays. Most connected devices don't have disc drives so how exactly are people listening to music CD's? People very likely have other alternative devices that they can use or convert the contents of the music CD to something that then can use elsewhere.

AA batteries are far better than the PS4's horrendous controller "solution", where if the battery dies your controller is rendered completely useless.

The (rechargeable, if you like) AA batteries in the Xbox One controller last MUCH longer than the DS4 charge, which still has that awful light pointing DIRECTLY at the television.

Plus the tragic, broken sticks on the DS4.

Who the hell designed that thing? The trackpad is also a useless eyesore.

Poor PSpoor.

I can't help it if your sad corporate biases blind you to the truth.

What would you rather pay for:

$70 for another cheaply built DS4 when the battery dies

Or $15 for some rechargeable batteries that have a longer charge than what you get using the DS4's 10cm USB cable

?

Batteries make the most sense and are the most CONSUMER-FRIENDLY solution.

On the subject of being 2015...yep it is 2015, and xbone still uses AA batteries lol. If people are ok with this Im sure people can manage without PS4 playing the ancient CD format.

Were you always a corporate apologist or did

QQing because I called xbone out on a similar issue in 2015...aww sorry but using batteries to charge controllers is a joke in 2015, deal with it.

My batteries never died...so your bone head scenario fails.

Keep trying and QQing tho...lol

I see the lack of logic in your "argument" has you trying it with the insults.

Stay mad.

@bobrossperm: It's dumb that it STILL DOESN'T SUPPORT MUSIC CD. I thought Sony had corrected this a long time ago. Very lazy. Just like they still haven't fixed the corrupted save file issue. http://n4g.com/news/1824489/ps4-corrupt-data-fix-for-error-ce-34878-0

And no one cares

Obviously some people do. You don't care, but you are not everyone. lol!! Music CD are still sold by the millions every year, so it's not like they don't exist. Home many people don't have a CD player in their car. If this was for a cassette tape or 8 track I could understand.

I never once used my PS1, PS2 or PS3 to listen to a CD, and that was back when I still actually listened to CD's.

It's kind of a silly thing to not have, but as has been said in this thread, nobody cares.

Honestly, I understand the point you are making, but functionally, it really doesn't matter, especially since the PS4 has Spotify now, as well as a DLNA media player (though that one barely works, from what I have been told).

You need internet for Spotify, and apparently PS4 users aren't ALWAYS online, so that's a no go. Like you said DLNA barely works, so that's also not an option. They should just have basic functionality working...
