We'll have to see, won't we? Look at Toms negatives: "battle mode is boring." That reads like middle school. I like Tom, but he is starting to negate the point of a critical review. "The character roster is weak". Well, it doesn't get any more subjective than that. Personally I'd take 6 Nintendo characters over 50 lifeless ones. That is something detracting from the games score? On such a recognized website, a game with such tight mechanics should really be recognized.

@Heirren: they're fair arguments and negative points though, the battle mode used to be amazing but they have neglected it recently. Also i agree the character roster isn't that strong. Who cares about playing as the whole koopaling family? Or baby or metal versions of everything?

@_Matt_: No, the characer roster is completely subjective. That is all there is to it. Even if I agree that nobody uses the babies, it is simply not a critical point. On the battle mode front, Toms point comes from homes of the Mario Kart of old. It is funny how he has been so vocal for them to really change their games, and now that Mario Kart has really evolved into more focused racing, the battle mode just would not work as it once did.

so how shall we refer to mario kart in the future? flop kart 8? mario flop 8? which sounds better

I remember saying something along the lines of "Mario Kart 64 scored a 6.4 so it would be funny if they scored Mario kart 8 an 8"

But I didn't actually mean it !!!! Haha, lol don't care that it flopped. Still looks like a 9 to me.

Crazy how this had been hyped AAAE; what were users thinking? The safe, obvious bet is always 8.0.

Kind of surprised it didn't get a 9. Looks like a great game though and the MC is sitting at an 89.

Eh, still a high score. Below the average, as usual for GameSpot, but 8 is a solid score.

Wow, they nerfed the star? That's news to me. Seems like they were really focused on making this game skill-based, according to Tom.

No clock in Grand Prix? That's...um...odd.

He has a strong point about the Battle mode; it sounds terrible.

I think Tom wrote a very good review. It sounds like Mario Kart 8 is awesome, although it has some minor faults.

Getting it day one, can't wait. May seems pretty stacked for games.

How come Nintendo and Microsoft games are hyped 9 and up but Sony games are hype 8 and below here? Anyway I just wonder when I'll get to play these Nintendo games again since I will not get a Wii-U ever. Starting to miss these franchises. I really hope they announce a new system on par or better than the two now at E3.

Looks like they took out a page from Sonic ASRT by focusing more on skill and putting less emphasis on items too.

There’s no option to invite friends into a game, and Mario Kart 8 also doesn't provide message notifications.' wow seriously ninty need to get with the times. i know they want to make it kind friendly but they can put this sort of stuff behind a parental control option

I know, I completely agree. Mario Kart is like a party game versus this, which plays more like an actual racer.
