to me a hardcore game is defined by its lack of fearof alienating the casual audience in crafting deep gameplay. for example, sins of a solar empire was designed for gamers who are willing to time and frustration to get a grasp on the mechanics, and are willing to invest time in honing their skills to succeed. here's a list of games that I think will appeal to hardcore gamers this year:

  • Parabellum
  • Demigod
  • Starcraft 2
  • Dragon Age: Origins

any others?

Divinity 2 is another game that fits your criteria, I think. Also ArmA 2 and OpFlash 2.

Men of War should be there, especially since it's not only complex as hell, but also difficult as hell :D

But most of all...Black Shark, that's propably the most hardcore game this year

THIS. By Sgt Barber's stupid opinion, something like World of Goo isn't a hardcore game because it's approachable for anyone to play. Yet if you wanna go through that game and meet all teh OCD requirements, you are hardcore.

Their are Hardcore games because they are games that don't appeal to mainstream gamers.

According to Wikipedia, X3: Terran Conflict's retail release date in the US is in April, so I'd have to say that.

What is hardcore exactly?

Even SW definition is open to opinion.

Hardcore **

Generally considered to be a longtime, dedicated gamer with a deep love for the medium. Hardcore gamers have typically played a large number of games, follow industry news, and have a genuine interest both in playing videogames and the hobby as a whole. The hardcore demographic also includes those gamers who become dedicated to the development of games.

**The exact definition of a "hardcore gamer" is a subject that is sometimes debated within System Wars - this definition encompasses a general explanation for the term's use in most discussions, however the exact games, systems, and habits of a "hardcore gamer" are a matter of personal opinion.

I have seen people say hardcore is:

-Someone who seeks to play occult gems.

-Someone who plays games 8+ hours a day.

-Someone who is in the gaming developing or general business.

-Someone who plays 1+ games professionally.

-Someone who just seeks to be the best in 1+ games.

-Someone who collects games and systems.

I'm confused, now even a game is hardcore? :?

No, he meant hardcore. Don't start the riduculous "bu..bu..there are no hardcore games" argument here. Previous ones on SW proved this argument doens't lead anywhere for any side so you will be just derailing the thread

Exactly. Is Super Mario Bros. a hardcore game? You might say no but how do you explain the gamers who who have mastered insane speed-runs in the game and can even beat the game holding the controller upside down and know how to take advantage of every exploit or glitch in the game. They're pretty damn hardcore if you ask me.

There are games that are more friendly to casuals than others. Mario is a series that's very accessible while getting harder the further you go into it. Anyone can play Galaxy well enough to get to Bowser, but you have to be hardcore to get all of the stars.

As in deep gameplay, that requires time and effort to master the mechanics.

People who use the would "hardcore" are children who want to be more adult. Get over yourself. The only classification is it's rating from a children's game to adult. Hardcore means nothing unless you're insecure about the games you play. Which I would assume anyone threatened by the Wii is. Or else you wouldn't be making lists of games you can play solely because they're "hardcore." It's a pathetic excuse of a gamer. There's no "hardcore" movies, games or books unless you're talking about the excessive amount or exploitation of something. Like gore or nudity. But that doesn't make "it" hardcore because thats not what the word means. Everyone on here uses the word incorrectly. It can only be applied to players if you want to get down to it. An object cannot be "hardcore", but ones enthusiasm towards that object can be...

Plenty of people consider "hardcore games' to mean "complex and not easy to pick up and play" ..ie exact opossite of casual games

to me a hardcore game is defined by its lack of fearof alienating the casual audience in crafting deep gameplay. for example, sins of a solar empire was designed for gamers who are willing to time and frustration to get a grasp on the mechanics, and are willing to invest time in honing their skills to succeed. here's a list of games that I think will appeal to hardcore gamers this year:

  • Parabellum
  • Demigod
  • Starcraft 2
  • Dragon Age: Origins

di_sgt_barber

The new 2D XBLA RPG is supposed to bring back real RPG gaming in its roots, with huge dialog, amazing art and atmosphere

Two Worlds Temptation has village creation, sailing the oceans, amazing vast world, etc it is as hardcore as it gets too

Kingdom Under Fire 2 : Dominion, if it is anythng like the xbox 1 exclusives, will be a hard strategy game

Risen from Gothic developers will definatly be hardcore

FF13, Witcher, Dungeon Hero, Precursors, Mass Effect 2 etc are for both hardcore and casuals, but do have their own hardcore elements

There are no such thing as hardcore games and StarCraft 2 is to video games as Ipod is to Mp3 players. Everyone from gamers to non gamers are excited for the release of StarCraft.
