It's not that using the Kinect for voice controls (VC) is stupid. The part that's stupid is that I have a mic for both of my systems and I can't use VC. Why not?

Well I agree that I wouldn't get one just for some voice controls, but I'm pretty sure Kinect has some voice recognition built into it whereas using a mic the developers would have to create their own on top of developing the game...I think I saw someone say that. I'm sure someone else could explain it better but I think that's the case.

this is what i dont understand..... why need kinect for 'voice commands/etc.." if you can just use a cheap mic (which gets packed with every 360 anyways -.-)

If that's the case then that would make sense. I still don't see why they can't just place VC into the coding for the actual game.

I thought it was incredibly dumb when they showed it off for Mass Effect 3. I was like "Why couldn't they have done this before? Every Xbox 360 comes with a Microphone..."

And before you think there's some "special trick" to the Kinect for Voice Recognition or something, Windows has had this feature for their OSs for Years and all it takes is a simple $10 Microphone.

I thought I was the only one that thought it was dumb. I'm surprised people still buy into these gimmicks.

This voice recognination is not that new or that complex at all.

Nintendogs did it 7 years ago.

That's not the issue I have. I want to know why voice controls can't be used with a regular mic.

Then why aren't PS3 games using Voice commands? Following your logic.

Yeah good point. The mics should allow you to do that stuff without the need to buy an expensive Kinect accessory. I'm sure they could do it, but then what would they use as a selling point to Kinect. Half of what they show at E3 is voice command related. Kinect is turning out to be more bark than bite. Other than Dance Central, I have yet to see a use of Kinect that is definitely better than Move or Wii Mote.

Because it's a gimmick that serves little purpose. My phone had voice command and I used it once to see how it worked and never used it again.

Works quite well actually, although some aspects are better fit with a controller.

They can--a la Tom Clancy's EndWar. The main problem comes down to the software, and MS already provides the tools for Kinect voice integration where as a developer would have to build software from the ground up to make use of the standard mic.

I'm thinking about starting a business and selling lems a revolutionary device that lets you record your own voice and then listen to it just for $200. I think it will be success.
