The Gamespot Editor GotY Tally

The question of which game will be Game of the Year for 2013 on Gamespot is particularly exciting this year since Gamespot hasn't actually given us their final nominations and runners up for the overall category yet. What they have given us is lots of tangential hints, such as platform specific winners, and the editors' top ten of the year.

Because I have way too much time on my hands after finishing my finals yesterday, I decided to compile a leaderboard for how many times a game figures on an editor's top ten of the year list. Since we already know the platform specific winners, this should help us figure out which game will nail GotY this year.

-> PC spanks everything else
-> In terms of dedicated platforms, 3DS dominated everything else
-> GTA 5 is a clear frontrunner for GotY
-> So is The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds. In fact, it is the highest placed exclusive on that list, and second overall

Oh, and by the way, re-releases and expansions won't count for GotY, so stuff like Spelunky, Diablo III, and so on, are all out of the running.

The Last of Us will win. Mark my words.

This is kind of pointless since editors tend to be platform specific.

Having GTA V on my PS3 I would go with it myself. The amount of work they put in with all the detail, locations, is a clear winner in my case.

GTA 5, The Last of Us, A Link Between Worlds, Gone Home, State of Decay, DOTA 2, Super Mario 3D World, Spelunky, and Earthbound (no, really) off the top of my head. A lot of editors didn't specify any #1s, so I'm not sure it'll matter. Plus in a group vote process, it has to be compromise and consensus, so the more a game appeared in a best of the year list, the higher it has a shot of winning.

When GTA 5 or ALBW appear on nearly every critic's list, we're sort of done here.

Like I said in the other thread I would not look at the editors choice to determine the GOTY since a lot of the restrictions that are in place for the GOTY are not present in the editors choice.A lot of games not nominated for anything in any of the GOTY categories were included in the editors choice.Also, some games released last year, but released on other platforms were included in the editors choice.Only the discussion about GS's GOTY by the GS editors will determine the game that will win GS GOTY.

My chumling, this may be a shocking revelation that will rock your world, but more people tend to play popular games.

I wonder, if TLoU wins GOTY (which would be deserved) isn't Gamepost pretty much saying their reviews don't mean ****?

Sadly mainstream websites like gamespot are likely to give in to peer pressure from young adults who are very angry at the world.

Not sure how the PC spanks anything, the top three agreed upon titles find their home on consoles and handhelds.

Because it´s by far the system with most games nominated.

For a person who spends 95% of their days on SW, TC sure knows very little how GOTY is chosen.

State of Decay is also on PC.

I think you're getting ahead of yourself. Obviously some people on the staff are going to have more pull than others (assuming they actually get in a room and debate). I doubt they would simply ask for a list of top 10 games and simply count them.

Kevin VanOrd, Carolyn Petit, Peter Brown, Junstin Calvert, Zorine Te, Randolph Ramsay, Maxwell McGee, and Jess McDonell didn't put TLOU in ther top 10. What does that say about their contributions?

Having looked at all the top 10s, im fairly certain that GTA 5 will be GOTY

Tom gave the game a score of 8/10. GS should stand behind reviewers' opinions instead of allowing a AAE game to get GOTY status. It would kind of render the whole scoring system here absolutely useless.

So, are we looking at A Link Between Worlds winning GotY then?

As much as I'd like to see it, GS will NEVER give a handheld GOTY. I'd love to be wrong, but I don't think I ever will be.

Seriously? Not a single mention of Pikmin 3 on any list? Man this game is catastrophically underappreciated. It's exceptionally designed by any standards. My guess is that most of them never played it though.

He's right, though. How you can play The Last of Us and not think it is one of the 10 best games of 2013 is beyond me. I can understand leaving Super Mario 3D World off the list, despite it being the better game, if you don't play it to the point that it gets really good.

Gamespot does things their own ways. Anyone who has been on this site long enough should know that by now. I wouldn't have picked "Journey" last year and I wouldn't pick TLOU this year either. I thought Bioshock Infinite or GTA V would have won this year, but I can accept Zelda since at least it's a full complete game and has a decent Metacritic score. We all know that games like Bioshock Infinite, GTA V, TLOU, Forza 5, Gone Home, Path of Exile & Super Mario 3D World will get GOTY honors on other sites. So it's not really a big deal. At least not to me. Cows will think it's a big deal though.
