Xenoblade Chronicles is the only correct answer.

Out of the list ME3.Thoug I see the soul games and witcher stomping out everything els.

From the games on the list, my choice would be Xenoblade, followed by The Witcher 2 and Dark Souls.

I personally loved the first ME. It was my first RPG this gen and it just blew my mind. There are plenty of worthy titles just maybe the nostalgia made me click ME1

I usually say Fallout NV....buuuut I think Dark Souls will win and that's a close second for me. So Dark Souls.

As a PS3 gamer I say Skyrim, it's such a huge game you don't even need mods and it's still dwarves every other rpg in game content.

The most complete RPG.....Dark Souls.

However, if the entire Mass Effect Trilogy counts, it would be the top. The games individually need the other titles to be truly great.

Well, to be honest, thanks to mods Skyrim is a very different and much better game on PC, even if I still wouldn't name it as best RPG

I always count the trilogy as one game, since it's all one continuous story. Shepard's journey doesn't conclude in ME1, it concludes in ME3, and overall it's one running plot about the Reapers.

Honestly the games in your list are terribad. Last gen was a terrible gen for RPGs. I hate all of these new-school RPGs. I just want classic, turn based strategy with random battles, memorable battle music, lots of different attacks and equip items, a variety of playable characters, an old-school style level-up system, etc. I miss the old(SNES) Final Fantasy games. Those are my idea of a good RPG.

The only true RPG's on that list (to different standards of "role-playing"; one narrative, the other gameplay) are New Vegas and Demon's/Dark Souls. I'll vote Dark Souls just to give it recognition it deserves.

A single story spread over three drastically different gameplay experiences.

The Lord of the Rings is a single story spread over three volumes of the same activity. Mass Effect 3 is not even in the same realm of gameplay as ME1. ME3 is more like Uncharted while ME1 is more like Knights of the Old Republic. Both good at what they do but you can't call them the "same" type of experience.

RPG's like all other genres must evolve to progress with the times. Just keeping things the same leads to stagnation, which isn't good for any game, series, or genre. And believe me, I can appreciate nostalgia as much as the next guy (I still have a soft spot for KOTOR, R-Type, Spy Hunter, the 16bit Ninja Gaiden, and so on...) but there's a difference between having a retrospective outlook and living in the past.

However, the three games need each other to achieve greatness.

ME1 lacked character development that the next two games have.

ME2 is needing the predecessor to build the setting, and its successor to finish the story, It has middle chapter syndrome and the weakest plot of the series.

ME3 needs the past two games to make the moments of the story more special. It is also the most powerful save import of all time.

And no, ME1's gameplay is not great at what it is doing. That's why Pinnacle Station is such a bad dlc.

This masterpiece over Mass Effect, Skyrim, Fallout, everything, even Xenoblade Chronicles.

I will agree with you that I had a way more better time with this one then xenoblade.

I'd say Fallout: New Vegas if it actually had a chance of winning, but I know it doesn't, so Dark Souls.
