Hey guys.

Since Uncharted 4 is right around the corner, I decided we should make this thread. Tell me about an adventure you have been on that seemed like it was out of a movie.

You know the rules:

1. No flaming, but playful ribbing or jabbing between friends is allowed.

2. Save politics and religion for Off-Topic.

I once went exploring an old, abandoned farm that belonged to my uncle when I was kid. It was completely overgrown with trees and shrubs of all kinds, and it felt like I was exploring a jungle or something. Fittingly enough, DKC was what I was into at the time alongside my cousins.

Eventually that farm was fixed up and became productive. Then we would ride ATVs through it, crashing into banana trees and fences. I crashed into a fence once and got flung off. It was fun.

I feel the same way about DKC1-3 as mmmwksil but probably liked DKC1 more than he/she did. DKC1 made an impact.

DK64 was tedious and fun at the same time which is weird. Parts of it was tedious and parts of it was fun.

@illmatic87: The simple looking nipples were intentional.

But when I look back it at more, maybe I should have to make it fit considering how much I detailed the abs. I'll keep that in mind next time I do a muscular drawing.

Yeah, I was looking at the consistency of the linework you did. You have bold lines as outlines of steep changes in from/geometry. Then you've used finer lines in more suble geometry changes that's backed by shading/color work. Then you have the nipples drawn like that in the same fine line and it just looks like you slapped in on there at the end.

Could probably just try a dip in colour for the nipples. Or now that I think about it, you could have easily just abstracted the nipples by not having the detail there at all, while still communicating that it's there with how detailed the rest of it is.

Anyway, this conversation is kinda getting awkward

BYE.

That's what makes it worse, it's like all the work went into just the controls.

Why are there less boss fights?

Why are the branching paths gimped?

Why are we fucking recycling areas from the first game?

If it's a fucking remake of Starfox 1/Starfox 64, why are you dropping shit?

How the **** do you have a score attack game without leaderboards? What is this poverty Platinum Games have had to deal with, part of me wonders if some of the design decisions made in Bayonetta 2 to be all boss rushy are a product of them knowing it wouldn't be as much about leaderboards as OG Bayonetta. The gorilla fight was such a bore, and even the final chase was so anti-climactic. I basically dodged a floating head 3 times, and then Fox flew the **** away. I'd say this is shitty enough I'll appreciate Korra and Madworld a bit more from Platinum, but everything wrong with this game is 100% Nintendo, platinum's just gonna get the team ninja treatment, where they'll get the majority of the blame, even though everything wrong with the game is on Nintendo. Fucking goons man.

So I can only imagine our crazed leader @charizard1605 is happy now that Persona 5 has a release date in Japan, and a worldwide release is likely due during E3 next month.

Must say even I'm pleased by this, as well as the latest trailer. The wait is almost over.

Also surprised Uncharted 4 managed a 10 from GS. How much did that cost I wonder? I'm eagerly waiting the price drop to $10 before I get it.

Today has been a good day.

Uncharted is reviewing well.

Persona 5 got a new trailer and a Japanese release date.

And I'm closing the day with Captain America: Civil War. Sitting in the theater now. It's almost here! Watched the entire MCU again to lead up to it. I enjoy these movies so much.

They need to release a Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3 or, on topic with the topic title, a super hero game with cinematic flair and all that jazz. Yuss.

It's been a while since I've done any art for fun, so a buddy of mine gave me some much needed motivation by challenging me to design an evil ET. I think I went overboard and lost sight of the challenge, but it was fun lol.

Spent about 3 hours on the sculpt here, not sure if I'll be taking it to completion though.

@a-new-guardian:

Thanks man, yeah that would be awesome! I had an opening to do some creature design for Tripwire on Killing Floor 2, but it wasn't paying enough unfortunately.

I'd love to do creature design for a living though. Instead I get stuck creating realistic characters most of the time. Which isn't a bad job either, it's just nowhere near as creative.

This is the kind of stuff I usually work on.

Note: I'm not a shader artist or a lighting guy, so these are the best renders I can get lol.

A bit surprised you actually bought it.

Gyro controls can get annoying, but again like with Splatoon I never found them as unbearable as other people find them. I think they can be pretty cool at times, but the fact that you have to divide your attention a lot is obnoxious. Especially when trying to shoot from the TV is utterly pointless because the reticle isn't really aiming where you think. Plus, while I like the gyro-controls I wish Nintendo had made them optional like other games because it's becoming really divisive and in many ways kills the critic scores and impressions from players.

My main gripe with the game has to be the fact that it felt a lot like Star Fox 64 though. I mean we already freaking got Star Fox 64 3D not too long ago, we want a fresh experience. Yes, Zero adds things to the table, but the game length is just as short and it really is a rehash. I hope despite the flaws that the game sells well enough to continue the series. Nintendo does listen to feedback despite their very stubborn outer-shell. Boss fights were kind of cool, but overall Zero was fun first time through and probably a 7 in my book. It was nice that they at least gave you Star Fox Guard for the $60 price tag.

Hopefully the next game is similar to the older ones, but also branches off like Adventures did.

Blender is pretty legit actually, it's come a long way in recent years. But yeah, I don't use it myself.

I got my start in simulation a while back. That shit doesn't count though, it was like PS1 level modeling, I didn't last in that for long. I think I started getting freelance gigs for entertainment work in 2009/2010, something like that.

Fortunately I was able to bypass the studio grunt struggle and leap straight to self employment. The reason why I bring this up though is because my list of software is bloated as **** lol. In a studio you only have access to their tools, but working from home I can use whatever the **** I want and I'm the kind of guy who will use the best tool for the job.

I guess my main go to programs would be these:

  • Zbrush for digital sculpting (like the alien dude posted above).
  • Modo for modeling, retopology and UV mapping.
  • Photoshop for texturing in 2d space.
  • Mari for texturing in 3d space.
  • Marmoset for previewing assets.

Now that's a pretty modest list, but unfortunately it doesn't end there, I also dabble in...

3D Studio Max, Maya, Sculptris, Quixel Suite, Artec Studio, Geomagic, Xnormal, Lightroom, Illustrator, Knald, Unity, Keyshot, After Effects, etc..

Also trying to learn Substance Painter and Substance Designer at the moment, then get deeper into Marvelous Designer after that lol.

Yeah, I guess that did sound like a knock against Blender, though I was just assuming the paid software out there dwarfs it by comparison.

You go to school for all that though? I always thought it would be nifty to make a hobby out of 3D modeling or photoshop, but I've never been one to really start things without a solid foundation. It's hard for me to just want to pick up a program, and hit up Youtube tutorials even though that's probably by far the best way to learn 99% of things. Sometimes it's good to have the deadlines of school and work that keep you focused.

Not sure if it applies to other fields, but in Design/Engineering, Blender is really valuable to learn and list down on your portfolio or resume if you ever get into a relevant field that can take advantage of it. Employers wont laugh at it just because it's free.

Getting a business license for professional software is never cheap; for instance the consultancy I used to work in used to pay up to ~$11,000 yearly for access to a specific CAD package (Solidworks) without the all the additional plugins. That's just not on the table for some businesses, especially if they specialize in work that barely takes advantage of it.

Blender is there and free if the need ever arises to communicate an idea or to even realize one. It also helps that professional software tools are just really good with support for multiple formats and have much more flexible business models. Blender generated content wont go obsolete even if a business decides to upgrade to something else or use blender generated content for other applications.

-

Conan, have you ever used Maxwell Render? The GOAT if you have the time to use it. But for us/myself, Keyshot just gets the job done really fast and easy..

Yeah, for a long time it was like that. Blenders interface was a clusterfuck and the tools were lacking, but they got over that hump.

These days it's right up there with the Autodesk giants like Maya and Studio Max. Kind of silly how so many studios continue to funnel money into those two programs when the free alternative is just as great. Guess they're just settled in their ways.

Personally I still prefer Modo, but only because objectively it has the best modeling tools and workflows. It's not quite as fully featured as Max or Maya, but from strictly a modeling standpoint it's the best tool set around.

Right on the money man, that's exactly it.

I did go to school for this stuff, but 99% of what I know, I learned online or through practice and experience. Still, for that initial 1%, that baseline foundation, it was imperative that I went to school. If it were up to me to learn the fundamentals completely on my own then I never would have done anything. Some 3D peeps are self taught from scratch, but that's incredibly rare these days.

Not sure if it applies to other fields, but in Design/Engineering, Blender is really valuable to learn and list down on your portfolio or resume if you ever get into a relevant field that can take advantage of it. Employers wont laugh at it just because it's free.

Nobody will laugh at using Blender in entertainment, any studio that knows what they're doing knows that Blender is more than capable. Still, the game industry has a hard on for Max, just as the VFX and Animation industries have a hard on for Maya. They would never turn down a strong portfolio simply because you used Blender, but many studios will request that you take the time to transfer your skill sets to Max or Maya.

Kind of fucking stupid really, since nearly any type of asset can be transferred from one package to another through a generic format. But it is what is I suppose.

Conan, have you ever used Maxwell Render? The GOAT if you have the time to use it. But for us/myself, Keyshot just gets the job done really fast and easy..

Never used it, but I've heard all about it. Maxwell and Arnold seem to be the big ones these days.

I've never been much of rendering guy myself. I used to beat my head against Mental Ray back in the day, and I've dipped my toes into V-Ray and I-ray, but that's about it for my experience with big rendering engines.

On the rare occasion that I need to show off some fancy design piece, Modos renderer is good enough for me. I used to use Keyshot a lot, and it's great, but it's been a while since I've messed with it.

These days I just send everything through Marmoset lol. I know it's technically a game renderer, but I even use it to preview VFX assets. My clients are really just buying the models and the maps, so as long as I show them a nice preview shot then that's good enough.

Yo, this is all sorts of awesome, man.

@charizard1605:

Hey, thanks bro!

I've decided to take it past the rough-out stage. Refining forms right now and hoping to get it prepped for detailing by the weekend. I won't dump on this thread with updates, but I'll post the completed sculpt when I finish.

Definitely work on it, man, I'd love to see the final work when it is done.

I agree with theguardian, you should look into designing art for video games lol. You'd be better than just about 90% of the big AAA designers out there for sure.
