that would mean different standards per game and even platform, i would like to get a general idea of a ball park range.Developer at the very least broke even and then some.

For a handheld, maybe 200-300k
Wii - 400-500K
PS3/360 >500K (development costs vary a lot)
PC - No idea
These are all estimates. I could be completely wrong.
Depends on the game. FFXIII for example was expected by some here on SW to sell in the 8-9 million ww sales range. It's selling between 100k and 200k a week in Japan and decreasing weekly @ around 2 million now and I doubt in NA it will sell more than 2 mill on each console. So by SW standards it's a sales flop. :P
I think hitting a million worldwide, and many i'm sure do but unless the dev announces it you'd never know as there is no way to easily gather world wide sales. Using just US/Japan sales is missing half the market.
But it all depends on the costs of making the game, some i'm sure only need to sell a few 100k.
i would have noted that these are all guess numbers as they came from VG charts but i would rather this thread be about the ball park numbers and not the games per console i chose to represent each gradientI think hitting a million worldwide, and many i'm sure do but unless the dev announces it you'd never know as there is no way to easily gather world wide sales. It's not the numbers but the idea that's deeply rooted within SW, if you didn't get that then you probably missed the joke.
But your joke about Wii sports is funnier.

i got it, but there's nothing wrong with a little turnabout, its fair play you know. i hope this thread can stay alive long enough to get around 60 votes, thats around where most of my poll threads get to.Yes and i would include publisher too. You can't really define one set number for it, development costs vary way too much. SOASE had a budget of 1 million...GTA4 had a budget of 100 million. Some games have barely any marketing at all, Modern Warfare 2 was said to have a marketing budget of 200 million. They're simply not on the same starting line, and have very different expectations.ManicAcehow ever you want to justify your vote i dont care i am asking for your opinion on a general rule of thumb, as all generalizations are wrong to some extent its not needed to point out how generalizations are wrong unless they are significantly wrong. so if your answer is along the lines of " when all parties involved break even or make a profit" than your answer would be what ever range you think most games would need to sit in order to meet that goal.
It depends on the platform it's released and the cost...For instance , Crisis Core has sold 2 million copies(i'm sure , by now it will be more than 2 m.) = outstanding for a portable console game.
If COD : Modern Warfare 2 sold 2 million copies , it would be considered a failure.
Personally , when i hear a game sold 1 m. , i consider playing it....
id say anything over 500k for games that receive minimal marketing, 1 mil for something that is heavily marketed.
This should be the officialguide for System Wars.
