Super Smash Bros 3DS Review Thread (GS: 8/10)

If this new generation of Smash Bros. only featured straightforward battles, the upcoming Wii U version — with its elevated thumbsticks and same-screen local multiplayer setup — would probably have an edge over this 3DS incarnation. But the fourth Super Smash Bros. is more than just brawling; a lot more, in fact. I've spent far more time collecting loot, doing Classic mode playthroughs, participating in Smash Runs and pushing my high scores in various minigames than I have actually fighting other people.

Super Smash Bros. 3DS hasn't been compressed as much as it has been tailored. And as unlikely as it may be, it fits like a glove.

Super Smash Bros.for Nintendo 3DS delivered just about everything I wanted out of it, and then some. I've grown attached to a number of newcomers, I've played more online matches than I ever did with Brawl, and I'll be tackling all of the single-player content for weeks on end. I'm all in again thanks to Smash 3DS, and it's made me even more excited for the Wii U version later this year.

While designed for your pocket, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS does not skimp on the features. A full-fledged Smash game, packed with stuff to discover, and boasting a roster of familiar and thoroughly inventive new characters, this is a beautiful fighting game than everyone can enjoy. Just a shame that the online isn't that hot.

I found so much raw joy in my time with Super Smash Bros. 3DS. And even though I played to the point where I was literally in pain, I didn't have to keep playing Smash Bros. 3DS. I wanted to.

Smash 3DS is impressive and, for the most part, feels right at home on 3DS. The multitude of ways to play and awesome customization gave me many reasons to keep fighting - and I’ve been at it for more than 45 hours already. It all produces a fun feedback loop of engaging in matches to unlock custom moves and trophies, then jumping into another match to try out the new stuff. Even the online modes feel carefully considered and focused on what the series does best, and what the 3DS can reasonably do. It’s a little disappointing that the four-player antics that are the best part of the console games don’t really work on a small screen, but there’s still more than enough that does work to make Smash a great 3DS game.

GameSpot gave it an 8.

For the amount of hype this game got, an 8 almost makes it look like a flop.

I'm going to avoid the 3DS version out of worry I'll kill my 3DS's circle pad. I've heard no word if Nintendo creating a patch for d-pad controls and circle pad taunts.

So, a flop. I just hope hype lowers for the Wii U version.

These reviews have made me awfully curious about what the Wii U version will exclusively offer aside from different stages. It'll be a shame if that version flops for being "too much of the same."

It is a flop but lets see what Metacritic says before we run into conclusions. Anything below 9 imho is a flop for this title. Either way its a good game though

I had a feeling it would get an 8. My pessimism in the hype thread aside. Mario Kart 8 got an 8 as well, so this would probably get the same.

But sometimes reviewers , like every human alive , making mistakes or their taste is way different than everyone else.

For example Hyrule warriors 8 ... rofl big time. A disguised Dynasty warriors game with Zelda characters !

Or Zelda SS , a really good game --> 7 ... rofl x10.

So metacritic is a decent way to see what is actually going on and thats what im going with instead of a single opinion , personally.

@AzatiS Fair enough. I just reacted to the "imho", since that seemed to indicate your opinion, when it was so factually.

Oh well, for all the flops and blunders, this year was still a good for one thing, a resurgence of RPGs. After the dark ages that went on between 2005-2012. Smash 3DS is still a great game, but definately not worth getting, unless the Wii U version turns out to be worse.

I wouldn't consider it a flop since people on here were expecting an 8 or worse, other than that one thread hyping it at a 9. Plus if you adjust to the controls which during the demo wasn't bad, (other than the risk of breaking the circle-pad) you have a 9 game.

@Maroxad: Why is it not worth getting? The headline of the review says, "Smashing success" and it earned an 8 on here meaning "great." I guess it means "not worth getting" by this System Wars thing of "flopping?"

It's nice to see that sheep didn't meltdown and go running to Metacritic like a certain SW faction has time and time again.

The demo was fun and I look forward to picking this game up. Its too bad there are so many games coming out over the next few months. Smash on 3DS might not get the time it deserves.
