Don't know why posters here thought different. Sony and MS wouldn't bother releasing new consoles if it wasn't a huge difference. One week away from greatness.

We saw substantial difference between the original xbox and 360 which had a 4 year gap. I'd expect an even larger difference with a 8 year gap.

I hope so. But you know what's sad, when he says high end PCs are already there. I am looking forward to seeing what the next consoles bring, devs are usually able to squeeze more out of the hardware on consoles than they can on PC due to the nature of them, so I am expecting a lot.

But this article also smells like promoting their own engine a bit too much instead of just talking about the consoles

So I expect at least 1920x1080 render resolution and things like 16xAF, 8xAA (or high quality AA), soft dynamic shadows on everything in a scene, particle lighting, particle motion blur, per object motion blur, tesselation, volumetric fog, fog shadows, advanced HDR and more...

...all in one scene in one game.

Oh yeah and 60 FPS or thereabouts. Get rid of this 30 FPS crap.

Basically PC stuff. And I expect the same, 1080p has to be standard, most if not all games should be very close to 60 fps too and no more damn jaggies. We also need to see a lot more dynamic lighting and no pre-baked crap. And lastly, some decent textures.

I'd like them to shake the idea of the forced cover shooter. Gears is by far the most boring and stale series i've played this gen.

This is my prediction: If you play on PC now and max games out, next gen the leap won't seem that big. If you're playing on an Xbox or PS3 next gen is going to look like a big difference, but not to in the same way the PS2 to PS3 jump was. Clarity is the name of the game next gen (well if 1080p becomes standard which it absolutely needs to) with textures that actually look like things and aren't just blurry blobs of brown and green.

Did you play Bulletstorm? Definitely the best thing Epic have done this gen. Way better than Gears. The skillshot system owned.

eh, it was fair.

I was mainly referring to their major new IP, which of course from this gen was gears.

This post pretty much nails it.

From PC to consoles won't seem like much, you would likely play it and say "What's the big deal?" from a visual standpoint

But from current consoles to the next will be quite large. Like going from a PS360 to a full kitted out PC now. Higher resolutions with crystal clear images and textures and framerates to make everything seem a lot more fluid

A substantial jump in games has never been in question. Going from 7 year old tech, which is currently roughly 10 x weaker than high end PC's (maybe more) the question is just how much of a substantial jump that is going to be.

A gain of 5x the power of a 360 or PS3 would be a massive improvement

umm you should look up the facts that no big publishers want to sink big amounts of money into new ips because the consoles been out for long, games sales are down, list goes on...

Well that depends on how "high end" they're going. I am very skeptical about that quote by Epic saying "high end". I seriously doubt AMD or nVidia have managed to fit the power of something like a GTX 690 or even a 670 into something that fits inside a console-sized chasis and remains cool. These things need to stay stable and cool for years too. Just look at the current consoles. Lots of overheating issues with those.

28nm is the main standard now in gpu tech and to have a gpu as fast as another gpu you need virtually the same amount of transistors which means at then same manufacturing process it will have virtually the same power requirements. Your not going to see 130+ TDP based gpus in the next consoles like 7870 or better.

Crysis 3 is where im starting to see a next gen look in pc games. Aint nothing touches Crysis 3 in graphics. But thats comparable to the 4 year gen leap of Xbox to Xbox 360. So this 8 year jump in graphics Xbox 720 will have, will definetly blow Crysis 3 out of the water. 360 to 720 will be like N64 to 360.

If the rumored specs are true about the 720 having a a gpu with 1.2 TFLOP and 68GB/s memory performance that isnt going to happen, since the gpu is not any faster then a mid ranged gpu from 2011.

So consoles basically catching up to PC's, I don't think anyone thought that was unrealistic at all. The rumour where the guy said the jump would be like going from Halo2 to Crysis maxed. That's a different story.

All you need to know is in the first sentence of the article:

"Next generation consoles, or high-end platforms, will offer a gamers a substantial leap over the current generation according to Epic founder Tim Sweeney."

Guess what he means with "high end platforms".

Spoiler: PC.

I liked Gears, but a new Unreal Tournament (that's actually good) would be nice.

Cause it's scalable but it wouldn't be the full blown engine. "We'll run on mobile phones and on a wide variety of things, so if a customer decides they want to port an Unreal Engine 4 game to Wii U, they could,".

Not a sheep. Just pointing out that it can do the same thing.

Doing it well is another question entirely.

There's no denying the wiiu is in for another significant power difference.

Did you read them? Here's a quote from CryTek themselves: Crytek: "CryEngine 3 'Beautiful' on Wii U"

So I'm going to assume coming them that it's running more than "well".

[QUOTE="fernandmondego_"]You take that back - Sheepfernandmondego_

Wii U can run Unreal 4 Engine.

Wii U can also run Cry Engine 3.

Not a sheep. Just pointing out that it can do the same thing.

Cause it's scalable but it wouldn't be the full blown engine. "We'll run on mobile phones and on a wide variety of things, so if a customer decides they want to port an Unreal Engine 4 game to Wii U, they could,".

You guys like to use the "scalable" excuse alot, don't you?
