if only the left thumbstick is on top and the right touchpad on bottom, it would be really cool. Touch pad for precise mouse-like aim is really smart

Interesting, i doubt is the final version since the design looks kind of bulky, but i would be lying if i didn't say it looks interesting.

@charizard1605:

The other one is a touchpad, which could be more precise for aiming (mouse-like).

It might be a good thing if done right (i.e. if they managed to do a really responsive touchpad).

I used to wish there was a controller with a small trackball instead of a right thumbstick for better FPS aiming back in 2006.

It will be nice. Between this and the Steam Link I will finally be able to properly extend my PC to my living room without the hassles I had before.

@Mystery_Writer: Ah. See, this makes sense. So it seems to be like a Wii U Pro layout adapted to PC controls. That might be interesting, though whether or not it works for, say, RTS games, depends on how responsive the other pad is.

This is a good point my friend: rather than trying the device or giving it a chance (I did) they are being fairly close minded and incredibly negative.

The Steam Controller is meant has a way to provide pad support for older pc games that don't have it. The controller reads your keyboard and mouse and allows custom layouts, like, well, a K/M.

The pads are also clickable (atleast the left one is) so you can use it for up, down, left right and forward, backward, left right, to be used in 2D games, like fighters and platforms, etc, and 3d games like fps, etc. This is where the ability to play older games on a pad comes in.

But ofcourse, you can also use it for newer titles since you can still use a d-pad on the left and a "mouse/analog" on the right.

This means you can play thrid person shooters with analog movement and mouse-like camera control (well, has good has the trackpads are). Something i've been waiting ages for.

Polygon article: http://www.polygon.com/2015/3/4/8149643/hands-on-with-the-final-version-of-the-steam-controller

The Steam controller is a big part of what makes a Steam Machine a Steam Machine; we were told that running SteamOS and being packaged with the controller were two of the main things that need to be included to use that branding. The controller itself has gone through a number of revisions, but we were able to use what Valve is calling the final version during GDC.

It's a strange controller if you're used to the offerings on consoles. There are two touch pads, one on either side, that double as buttons. There are triggers, two bumpers, and two more buttons on the rear of the system on either side. That means that, ignoring the four face buttons, two touch pads and analog stick, there are six buttons on the rearof the controller.

It all makes sense when you hold it in your hand, and the controller does some interesting things to emulate the use of a mouse and keyboard. In the demo I played, the right touch pad emulated a track ball, complete with a sense of momentum; you could flick your thumb over the pad and "feel" the effect of a rolling ball along with a sense of weight to the movement. You can bring up an overlay in Steam at any point and adjust what the buttons do, how they act, and the level of the haptic feedback.

It's fully configurable, which is part of the point; we were told that one of the features of the system was the ability to come up with a novel control scheme and then share it online so others can use your settings.

The controller is coming this November, for $49.99. It felt great, and boasts some interesting and borderline strange features. It will take much more testing to see if it's a viable solution for PC gaming in front of the TV, but it's already closer than most other pieces of hardware that promise to provide the same thing.

Sounds amazing

Not really sure I like that it curves the opposite way of normal controllers. Also seems chubby on the hand holds.

I don't mind the inputs really, but I think they need to ensure this controller is comfortable and form-fitting for normal use.

So this will allow games that would normally require or benefit from playing with M/KB to be played with a controller ?

yeah dual analog is unusable for me for shooters.... works good for camera though.

wiimote and mouse for me....hopefully the steam controller will be a 3rd.

Yes, that's it's primary functuation. If you want to use for other games, like fighters, should it be better in your opinion, you can aswell.

Well, I personally would not use it for 2D platformers or fighters, as it lacks a D-pad. But a PC gamer has so much choice now if they want to hook up a controller with a good D-pad.

It sounds really nice to be able to chill back and play some otherwise impossible games on my couch.

@that last picture: looks like they etched some kind of d-pad on that right track pad, so you can click on different spots to give a direction.

I do really want to try out the controller.

@R4gn4r0k: The pads are suppose to be clickable, like the prototypes. Just need to know if the right one is. The left is clearly clickable.

How good it is compared to normal d-pads, *shurgs*

Yes.... D pads have much more utility and can still perform the same function of an analog.

I wish they both had that cross mark. I think that it would help with feed back and knowing where your thumb is on the circle.

@R4gn4r0k: @inb4uall: Like i said, prototypes where clickable, so it stands that atleast the left is aswell in this final build.

Remember, that crossair is also for WASD in games, should you want. Many PC FPS don't have analog movement, so mapping it forward, backward, left, right is necessary, and that's where clicking comes in.

The only missing button from other controllers is the right analog, but since that's used mostly for camera controll, it won't be much fo an issue.

i have to try it.

on paper it should be ok....but it all depends on how well that pad works. i have tried to use laptop trackpads to control the camera in games and its not pleasent...but a lot of that is ergonomics.

a very interesting idea though...worth a good look.
