do you think console community
(and market too)
will obtain benefit
if manufacturers agree on making a common machine
(standard platform)
for next-generation system
(concentrating their talent and power on producing games)?

It should be a standardised system but each manufacturer should be allowed to make their own branded model with subtle design/asthetic differences, like DVD players etc.

The specs should be fixed and the overall functionality/features of the hardware and controller too...

Agreed. You'd get double prices, and lackluster products if one monopoly owned the market, since there would be no cheaper, better alternative.  Competition raises the bar for companies, thus forcing them to make better games to get more consumers.

there are some advantages and disadvantages to a standardised model

the good

More competition since anyone can make a machine that meets the standard. any machine that does meet that standard will then automatically have a games liberary. this means that ppl have more choice about what they want.

Cheaper consoles due to more competition

easier developement since one design fits all

the bad side

could possibly lead to a lack of thinking outside the box. consoles could become very very samey.
