Jeez. That's huge for 3 days and only in Japan. I wonder what that is comparatively with previous installments. I can see on VG Chartz that Brawl hit 2.38 million, but I wonder what it did in 3 days and what the install base was.

It has almost outsold the lifetime sales of Melee in Japan (1.39 mil)

Putting this game on the 3DS too was such a smart idea.

Of course it will. Some of the more casual fans will probably choose to settle with the game on a 3DS they already own (or just buy a 3DS for the game, instead of buying the much more expensive Wii U for it); on the other hand, Smash probably has the most engaged core, dedicated fanbase of all time, and I can't see too many holdouts who decide to not buy the Wii U game, especially given that it will be the first Smash in HD, and presumably, the one that Nintendo will put the most marketing muscle behind.

In the long run, Smash 4 on Wii U will definitely sell less than Smash 4 on 3DS, that's a function of install bases, and simply cannot be avoided. That said, though, I suspect both will do well (the Wii U game should outsell at least the N64 version), and for Nintendo, the 3DS version was a genius move, because it insulated them (and the brand) from bad sales.

After playing the Japanese retail version, that doesn't surprise me. It plays a lot better than I thought it would, and if there wasn't a new 3DS coming out, I'd probably cave in and get the XL so I could play MP with my brother.

3ds is a small electronics device... you got to be more careful than a console controller.

I'm still on the fence as I'm not a huge Smash player and don't see myself getting a WiiU anytime soon. Guess I'll give the demo some more time.

You can't infinitely chaingrab people with Olimar or Rosalina (that we know of)

Sakurai recently (today) confirmed Ice Climbers were cut because of the 3DS's technical limitations. Pikmin and the Luma aren't like Nana; Nana is literally a low-level CPU that mirrors Popo's attacks. In a four-player match the 3DS essentially has to render an extra character whenever someone plays Ice Climbers, and that would conceivably drop the framerate below its constant 60 FPS.

If they're gone from the Wii U version too this will be total bullshit. When the game was announced, people were grumbling how the 3DS was going to hold back the Wii U version; it looks like that may be the case after all. But I really, really hope they'll be in the Wii U version and then ported to an updated version of Smash for the new 3DS systems.

Also, chaingrabbing isn't a mechanic in Smash 4. Characters are immune to grabs for about about a second after being grabbed once.

I know people who are importing a Japanese 3DS just to play this game (also imported, of course). It's rather crazy.

Didn't Nintendo say the two games will have the same roster? I don't care about the 3DS version, so the idea of me losing one of my favorite characters to play as because of a version I'll probably never play kinda annoys me. -_-

I'll be downloading the demo this weekend. The demo will help me decide if I want to buy the 3DS version along with my Wii U version. Depends on how the controls feel.
