I wouldn't know. I got a second wind in FFXIV this summer and have been playing it on my PC a lot. Personally, my PS4 has been getting a lot of use as a Netflix machine sprinkled with a nice dash of downloadable games and indies. Hell, I bought a WiiU to give me some summer goodness, too. I am very very much looking forward to The Golf Club, Destiny, LBP3, DriveClub and GTAV since I held out for a PC or next-gen port.

You might have to ask a console-only peasant what their big thing is.

"Sony wins August NPD"

Jokes aside though anyone got some decent estimates on the numbers? Seeing whether TLoU had an effect is the only interesting thing about this.

@blackace: Probably because at E3 2013 Microsoft said something to the effect of "if you don't like the Xbox One online features, we have an offline console too, it's called the 360".

Seems like people listened to Microsoft and decided not to buy the new console, instead favoring an obsolete dinosaur. Good for Microsoft.

Xbox 360 still selling pretty well. XB1 selling ok, but it'll pick up as the holidays approach. They still have to launch in the other 33 countries of the world. Hot damn. I'll have a PS4 game to play when I come back from vacation. Bringing my 3DS and PSVita with me on vaca.

Well to be fair, you entered this generation as an Xbox fan. Both machines are the same age, released in Nov 2013, You bought the PS4 late and you got the Xbone earlier (at Nov 2013 launch). I also believe you bought your Xbone new and your PS4 used.

The biggest draw for the PS4 is PS+ which you don't have, although you do enjoy Xbox Live Gold on Xbone. You got five free GwG games on Xbone since Nov launch, and you missed out on 14 free PS+ games offered on the PS4. The value is there, but you aren't really being fair on both machines which is why you are surprised imo. I've had both machines since launch and I have an active subscription to Xbox Live Gold for a decade and PS+ for a few years. If I recall, last we spoke you said you couldn't find deals on PS+ like you could with XBLG, but showed you that both go on sale. In fact due to PS+ being $50, I find it on sale cheaper than I find XBLG which is $60. I pay a little over half for both ($25-30 for PS+, $35-$40 for XBLG).

I'm not nearly as surprised as you are and I've been as far as possible being that I'm actively subscribed to both networks and I've had both machines since launch.

IMO though, this has been a pretty poor year for gaming in general. I haven't even bought a Wii U game this year at all.

That being said, I don't use my PS4 or Xbone that much (playing PC and PS3 as of late), but due to PS+ my PS4 gets a lot more use than the Xbone.

14 free PS+ games since Nov launch >> 5 free GwG games since Nov launch.

I think you would see more of the value if you had approached both machines more fairly. As it is, I understand your surprise, but I can't relate to it with my experience.

  • Forza 5

  • Kinect Sports Rivals - lol Rare
  • LocoCycle - what a joke

They were't really ready for this generation to start , and they did a piss poor job of closing out the last one. I don't think I've ever seen a platform holder with sufficient money have such a poor 1st party output in the span of a year and a half from their owned studios.

Why are you comparing PS4 PS+ games released since Nov with Xbox One GwG games when GwG for Xbox One didn't even start until June 3? If you compared PS+ PS4 only games not cross-buy games to GwG Xbox One games, PS4 only have 3 games compared to 5 Xbox One games from June 3 to August 1. Hell even if you include cross-buy games, they released about the same amount of free games. Lol.

I liked the Xbox One launch games more than the PS4 launch games....preference I know. Also the multifunctional features of the Xbox One, It is the center of my game room as I can control my TV and audio receiver with the sound of my voice. It's nice saying Xbox on and everything turns on or control the volume with my voice while holding my baby and also makes it very easy for my wife to use. Its really nice how I can be watching Netflix and say Xbox play Titanfall and switches seamlessly and say go to Netflix and takes you right back to where the show you were watching left off. It's impressive.

I like how the Xbox One records a bad ass moment for you....it recognizes you did something cool in a game and automatically records that moment. I like the controller....I think it's the best controller ever made...I don't know man, I just think its a nice console. The PS4 has better specs but that's about the only thing that's better for me. I will enjoy a ton of PS4 games of course just like I did with the PS3. So for me the huge lead is puzzling.

@SolidTy: I will get PSN+ when there is a multiplayer game worthy of it...I understand the extra games you get with + but just like GwG they are usually games that don't really matter anymore and not a reason to have a new console.

And I don't think you are using all the features the X1 has to offer from the last time we talked......so you sir are not giving the X1 a fair comparison to your PS4.

Hell even if you include cross-buy games, they released about the same amount of free games. Lol.

Why AREN'T you comparing PS4 PS+ games released since Nov with Xbox One GwG games since November in a conversation about two new consoles that are only 9 months old? That's the discussion, why there is more HYPE surrounding one console over the other. You haven't participated in that discussion and are off subject. This is about the nine month old experiences provided by both machines, not the last two months (although even playing that oddball two month game, PS+ would still win due to more games and I'll explain why below).

First of all, I'm comparing launch Nov 2013 experiences to date. He was surprised by the HYPE and I was giving a justification on one variable he has overlooked. Clearly, your intent is not to answer his question and it irrelevant to why the PS4 has sold 10 million machines so far. Furthermore, as a consumer why would I care that M$ chose to delay GwG until June 2014? That's on them, not on the millions of consumers. I'm not here to play paddy-cake, I'm here to explain the difference between both machines since they released. Xbone was $500 at launch, Xbox Live Gold was $60, and we didn't get games until June? Meanwhile the cheaper $400, more powerful machine with it's $50 cheaper service was giving games since Nov launch. Yeah, that's something consumers notice and something you are trying to hide when you decided you wanted to pretend the months of November, December, January, February, March, April, and May don't count. Consumer noticed and that's my point. I'm not here to be a corporate apologist on my consumer experiences. He wanted to understand the HYPE train, and I wanted to give my take as an owner of both machines since launch.

Do you own both machines? Because if you don't own both machines since launch I'm not sure why we are chatting about the differences between owning both machines? You don't post like you own both machines. Your posts are very slanted when I read them. Clearly, if you don't own both, then that's not an conversation (owning both and what it's like to own both) you can't effectively participate in since you lack the experience from buying and owning both machines.

In any event, you missed the point. He's surprised and gave an anecdotal reason as to why he's surprised. I told him why I am not surprised and I gave my anecdotal reason adding in that I've been more fair with both machines. I also added in neither are hot shit right now in comparison to my PC and PS3.

As far as your other statement about the same amount of free games? That's not true either. Xbox used Max Curse twice two months in a row (which was super disappointing) and Sony has not done that with PS4. Considering how long Xbox had us launch buyers that paid more per year for the service and paid more for the machine at launch had to wait for GwG, you would think they wouldn't have used the same game (Max Curse) for two months. However, that's exactly what Xbox Management did. By your own math, you would be wrong again because even counting since June PS+ has offered more games since Xbox management stiffed gamers by giving them the same game twice two months in a row. I didn't even go into the quality argument using metacritic, but PS+ would win that as well. Again, it makes no sense to pretend the Xbone came out in June, two months ago, when it came out in November when I bought it. Games are games and we are talking Xbone to PS4. Cross Play is just another added bonus, not a detriment.

Even pretending that Xbone and PS4 released in June and trying to only count from JUNE on, giving the Xbone an advantage and removing the entire point of my consumer owning post, you will still see that Xbox dropped the ball and released LESS Games in the last three months than PS did. What the hell? Allowing Sony to release games since November, and then when it's finally time in JUNE, Xbox still dropped the ball and allowed Sony to top them from June - August? And you are defending these actions? HUH!?

7 PS+ games >>> 5 GwG games.

GwG (5 Games since June)

  1. June GwG: Max: The Curse of Brotherhood & Halo Spartan
  2. July GwG: Max: The Curse of Brotherhood (AGAIN!) & Guacamelee
  3. August GwG: Crimson Dragon & Strike Suit Zero (lower quality, but free is good)

PS+ (7 Games since June)

  1. June PS+: Pixeljunk Shooter Ultimate & Trine 2: Complete Story
  2. July PS+: (THREE GAMES) Doki-Doki Universe, Strider, & Towerfall: Ascension (87/100 MC)
  3. August PS+: FEZ & Road Not Taken

Of course, I posted above to prove that this is pointless since the machines came out in November, and yet by posting this pretend June releases only between GwG and PS+, I can see two more games with the cheaper PS+ service and higher quality games as well (based on MC).

Point is, this convo is about what the masses see in each machine, and in attempting to give an answer, you have went offtopic to create tangent rules for one of the machines. Creating those pretend rules won't answer the question on why one machine has some HYPE. There are a lot of other variables on why (DRM PR, higher launch price, etc), but my point was to talk about the user experience since both machines launched November 2013. That's a lot to consider up there, people will say my post here is a massive amount of ownage to the extreme, but you wanted to see a comparison (albeit not my point) so there you go. I know this because I own BOTH MACHINES and I'VE DOWNLOADED ALL OF THESE GAMES!

It's just become such a given now, that it's honestly not even news worthy.

Don't get me wrong, it's fun to destroy a lems hopes and dreams, to crush their aspirations of console dominance. But when they expect to be defeated every month it sucks a bit of the pleasure out of it.
