Sony Wants to bring "Shenmue" to Playstation

Sony's Adam Boyes has explained that the company is working on getting fans the games they want on PlayStation platforms and that includes the likes of Shenmue and Yakuza.

"When we started the third-party production team, it was born out of necessity. We had a lot of publishers and a lot of content that had come out for various platforms and various territories that weren't necessarily coming to our territory, platforms we'd love to see them on," Boyes told Kotaku.

Boyes explained that Sony are working on trying to get games that have been requested by fans on to Sony platforms.

"We've got a massive list—we're calling everyone trying to get that list as much as possible. A lot of issues come around clearances or intellectual property ownerships and stuff like that."

Interestingly, for Shenmue and Yakuza fans, Boyes says it is those games that Sony are focusing on.

"We get a ton of requests for Yakuza, a ton of requests for Shenmue. We see the lists," Boyes said.

"We have a person that compiles those lists and prioritises based on how many requests we've gotten. And I think to date there's well over 10,000 mentions across like forum threads and stuff like that. So those are the ones we're focused on."

Boyes also commented on when fans should expect to start to see the result of Sony's work getting ports onto PlayStation platforms.

"I would say within the next six months we'll have at least one if not a few announcements to make on that front."

If they get a PS4 Shenmue, it is DONE! You won't see a hypestorm of that size since FFVII.

The sequel didn't help first Xbox much. I doubt it'd have a broad appeal anymore besides Japan and a closed circle of gamers. What's more, it's pathetic Sony had plenty of its own franchises which were legitimate mountains of gold, such as MediEvil and Colony Wars and they let them die completely off. They had also franchises which were hugely popular such as Crash and Spyro and they simply let them tarnish. Moreover, Wipeout which despite having always been multiplat until 1999's Wip3out, was nonetheless a symbol of PlayStation brand. Now it is reduced to a downloadable game status. And now they're contemplating taking a franchise that was never theirs to begin with but are seen as saviors of gaming.

Wow was not expecting this! Looks like I'm going to be getting a PS4 now along with an XBOX 1 if they manage to pull off Shenmue 3...Easily one of my all time favorite game series!!

Blazed, were you talking to me? I have a Dreamcast at my parents house, I'll be there tomorrow, I can post a pic of me playing Shenmue. I know it's not a JRPG. It's a sandbox hodge podge of genres and QTEs.

I love Shenmue and hope the trilogy gets finished one day, but I wouldn't count on it. Unless Yu Suzuki can get it done for really cheap. Both Shenmues tanked in sales.

I think Sony could be on to something if they do a Shenmue HD remake of 1 and 2, and then have a solid ad campaign with Shenmue 3 to introduce it to a new generation. Can you imagine with modern technology what they could do with Shenmue 3. The first two were groundbreaking from a technical standpoint. It is too bad the Dreamcast had such a short lifespan, the first two games were among my all time favorite games.

People have been wanting this game for so long and more so than any other game.
It was one of the most expensive games and the realism and immersion at the time was unmatched.

Heck, they released a Shenmue Movie consisting of all the in game cutscenes at Japanese Theatres.
Sales wise... Every dreamcast owner would have to BUY the game TWICE for them to breakeven.

I have never understood the appeal of Shenmue. That was one of the most boring games that I have ever played in my life.

Wasn't Shenmue 1 and 2 both huge financial failures as well? It doesn't seem like a very good business decision to make another sequel for a game series that has never turned a profit before.

That would be a huge win for any fan of the series.

This is not a Shenmue 3 announcement, they are not a development team but a localization team. They are prioritizing the games that most people want to be localized and they will help whatever company to bring it to the west. In this case: Shenmue 1 & 2, Yakuza 5, FF Type-0, etc. But you guys make it seem like Shenmue 3 is coming.
