Sony should launch a version of the PS3 that doesn't support bluray movie playback and sell it for $300-$400. It'd be kind of like how the Wii uses DVD media, but isn't capable of playing DVD movies. Sony can then offer a download or something that'll enable bluray movie playback for $200 or so.

They should stand strong with their longterm strategy.

That is the last thing Sony should do.  They should stick with the plan & they will be fine.

It isn't the movie playback that makes the console so expensive to begin with, it's the fact that the machine is capable of reading BRDs. Unless the games themselves stopped shipping on BRDs, there would be no reason for them to strip out the codecs for playback to charge less; adding that features costs them almost nothing by comparison.

WORST IDEA EVER!!!!

well not the worst, but pretty damn close.

  1. Removing BD playback from the PS3 would not make it any cheaper for Sony, thus selling it for less would cause them to loose more money.
  2. Removing BD playback would hurt BD sales, as it is the cheapest BD player available, and as it comes down in price, will help BD movie sales.
  3. No one wants a crippled system, the 360 core should be a testament to this.
  4. The Wii is not cheaper because it lacks DVD playback, it's cheaper because it's a tweaked gamecube with a special remote.

Sony's choice to include BD was a brilliant move, maybe you don't see it like this, but the PS3 will eventually sell well. Because of the PS3, there are now more BD players in households than HD-DVD players, and the numbers aren't even close. With heavy studio support and several high profile releases every week, only a fraction of PS3 owners need to actually buy discs for the format to win.

Wether you want the player or not, the PS3 is an excellent video game console. It may be too expensive right for you right now, and you may attribute it to the BD player, but it was a much smarter move than excluding it from the device that is supposed to be the center of their electronics division. It doesn't matter if it's 600 bucks or 400 bucks, most people won't pay more than 200 for a game console. So if Sony can reduce the cost to make the system, it could drop into the "affordable" range just as fast as the 360.

Theyre thinking of the future.  Blu-ray and multimedia.  Games will come out in the future, if thats what you are whining about.  The PS2 is making big money off them.  Making a PS2 game is like making a PS2 game and a PS3 game.  They want to wait until they are ready.

No, that would defeat their whole vision. It would also turn people against them, and they would not sell many consoles. The 360 would not have any competition.
