Sony’s PlayStation 4 console will turn 1 soon, and even though we have seen several jaw dropping next-gen video games running on this leading eighth generation console compared to its predecessor, there are still years ahead to see what it is capable of. However, advancements in the world of technology are inevitable, and that is apparently why Naughty Dog programmer and senior member of Sony’s central technology group known as ICE Team, Cort Stratton, believes that the PlayStation 4’s hardware is “no longer top-of-the-line.” However, it doesn’t mean that developers won’t be able squeeze it in the coming years.

The latest PlayStation 4 is the leading eighth generation video game console right now, and it might even stay that way in the coming time, but Cort Stratton, who is a member of Sony’s eminent technology group known as ICE Team as well as a programer at Naughty Dog, thinks that the hardware that powers the PlayStation 4 console is already out of date. His claims are worth consideration as working with PS4’s GPU driver/graphics API, he has a good know-how about the console’s hardware.

Answering back to a fan on Twitter, Stratton agreed that PlayStation 4’s hardware can not be claimed as first-class, as that is how console cycles turn out to be, but that doesn’t mean that that the latest console isn’t capable of offering top quality triple A titles. He Stated: “The hardware is no longer top-of-the-line, sure. That’s how consoles have always worked & has very little to do with game quality. For example: the PlayStation 3 is 2005 era hardware, roughly; compare The Last of Us (2013) to AAA PC games from 2005.”

Pushing out of date PlayStation 3 hardware that originated way back in 2005 to handle blockbuster, most visually impressive video games like The Last of Us is not an easy task. Thanks to console programmers, we are still able to enjoy competing video games running on hardware that is almost a decade old. Similarly, PlayStation 4’s offerings will only grow in future. “Squeezing five to ten years of performance improvements out of a fixed hardware platform is what console programmers do best,” says Stratton.

The fact is that we are currently still stuck in the era of cross-gen games, and the previous generation of consoles is still being supported by several major video game developers. Hopefully, the eighth generation of video game consoles will have a lot to offer after a year or two, once all the focus shifts towards the development of next-gen games only. Upcoming games like The Order: 1886, and The Witcher 3 are already honoring the latest consoles, and we hope that 2015 will be full of similar, better games.

Have no fear though, games are coming.

At least PS4 can do 1080p. We should all be thankful for that.

Well if the PS4 is outdated then of course the XB1 is even worse....but have a little more pride in what you're putting out there. They are shocked their little plastic weak console is selling so well.

So I'm guessing uncharted 4 is gonna be downgraded? Only reason why he would be stating such is to avoid a disappointment in the near future.

It was outdated from the start. They just wanted to make sure they weren't losing billions right out of the gate like they did with PS3. They should have never been trying to talk power from the start. Focus should have always been on the game. Not what resolution the game is at. Their prideful talk is going to come back to bite them on the butt when most of their future games won't reach 1080/60.

There hasn't been that much in the way of core hardware advancement this year. We've had the usual CPU's and motherboards to go with them but the 2014 GPU's aren't out yet and neither DDR 3 or GDDR5 RAM have changed. So what exactly is he comparing the PS4's hardware too, that wasn't available last year?

I must have missed where either console was ever top of the line....

What is this guy even saying.... The lid has been off from the beginning.

1.8 TF machine Top of the line. Go sit down. 2008 would like a word with you......

Are you kidding me.... With this shit? This sounds like some BS Sony or Microsoft PR would say. Not an actual coder...

It's x86, theoretically they probably could upgrade the PS4's hardware in a couple years with all games being cross compatible...works for PC, cell phones and tablets and it's open hardware without standards and strict licenses. A couple of proprietary upgrades that doesn't force users to upgrade but devs can take advantage of while maintaining backwards scaled compatibility might possibly work out seeing how consumers are getting used to upgrading electronics every couple of years or so anyway.

New upgraded APU. Kinda like the upgrade Nintendo has done with the 3DS. Technically it would be a PS4.3 or something. But its something they should consider if they want to be the power kings.

that's a whole new system though. I thought he was talking about plugging in an upgrade to the actual PS4 system. Perhaps i interpreted that wrong

Don't know what it being x86 has to do with anything but yes they could do that unless they want to change to an ARM chip or something in the future then not so much.

Hardware is not really an issue on consoles. At least not so much these days. They wont be the most powerful, but how can they... its just silly to expect anything more.

Lol sony are so stupid its hillarious

Firstly the ps3 was released in nov 2006 and secondly a top of the line pc in those days should easily handle a sub full hd 30fps shooter on rails

Thirdly the ps4 was never top of the line and even a mediocre pc can outperform it

I hope this generation isn't as long as the last one. I think 6-7 years should be the max for a console generation. It should never go to 8 or more.

Not a great idea to use the 7970. Too much power usage and too much heat. Console cases have limited airflow too.

Tonga based GPU would have been great.

Pretty much what I expected. Any slight advantage with this gen would start to disappear pretty quickly within this disappointing first year. On the PC the mid range has really picked up with some interesting technology and DX12 is still to come as well. The gap is widening between the mid range and the high low-end consoles now.
