Sony "Nailed It" With PS4 and Deserves "Victory" Over Xbox One, Ex-EA CEO Says

Former Electronic Arts CEO and current top boss at Unity Technologies, John Riccitiello, has spoken out to say he thinks Sony "f**king nailed it" with the PlayStation 4 and deserves "victory" in the current console race against Microsoft and its Xbox One. Riccitiello made the comments during the GamesBeat Summit.

"There was a clash of ideas that really separated Sony and Microsoft," Riccitiello said, as reported by GamesBeat. "[The Xbox One and PS4] actually had very similar architecture that they were trying to bring to the table. But Microsoft focused … a lot on entertainment beyond gaming. Microsoft was trying to [compete against] Apple. They didn't feel gaming was big enough to justify the pent-up desire … to have the recognition they wanted as an innovator."

Riccitiello added that Sony, meanwhile, took a "gamer-first" approach with the PS4--something he says paid off. Microsoft's attempt to reach a broader market with its Xbox One TV integration was not necessarily an ill-advised move, but Riccitiello said Microsoft's "unfocused execution" was its downfall.

He used a billiards analogy to sum up the differences, in his mind, between Microsoft and Sony.

"Sony just said, 'We've made the best f**king game system we could' … partly because they didn't have the resources to do more about it," Riccitiello said. “Microsoft was focused on the shot after the one they needed to make, putting the 7-ball in the corner pocket, but they missed the first shot and didn't get another shot after it."

"Sony focused on the shot they needed to make, which was win the hearts and minds of the gamer. The broader scope of entertainment might be a bigger idea, but not with an unfocused execution," he added. "A tight execution on the 50 million people that matter, which are the people currently lapping up consoles … Sony f**king nailed it, and they deserve the victory."

With more than 22.3 PS4s sold, Sony's new console is the current leader of the new-generation console race. But as Microsoft has stressed time and again, the sales race is a marathon, not a sprint.

Honestly I would say neither console deserves it.. They are both the same consoles more or less, weak computers with less features than last gen.. No backwards compatibility what so ever, and even more control over the consumer (such as being forced to pay for online services.). This is the first gen I can think of in which I feel none of the consoles are worth getting as a pc gamer..

Meh.. I play games, not sales. That's why I own both systems. Both consoles are selling better then last gen. PS4 is just selling close to what the Wii was selling last gen. Did anyone care when the Wii was blowing away the PS3 and XBox 360 last gen? Microsoft screwed up their reveal and this is why their sales aren't as good as the PS4. It's that simple. Plus they launched the system 18months to early. When they built the XB1 it was suppose to launch with Win10/DX12 already installed on it. When DX12/Win10 is launched on the XB1, that will be it's real launch. We'll wee what happens after that.

3, 6, and 7 are wrong. I agree with the rest.

One of the most important reasons outside of the typical "MS screwed up" reason for PS4 winning, is the fact that PS3 was doing great at the second half of last gen.

People don't forget that, MS went full kinect mode and has almost no noteworthy exclusives in the latter part of last gen, meanwhile PS3 was pumping out great games and was firing on all fronts, PS+, awesome exclusives, ...

Gamers know Sony supports its consoles well, MS is a joke in that compartment.

The PS4 was $100 less than a weaker xbox one.

The design is better than the 80's VHS xbox design.

And the OS is faster snappier than the xbox one with faster installs to.

Point 3 was about the performance of the hardware, yeah it isn't that great. Neither is the power of the Xbox One, but that doesn't have anything to do with it, it was about the PS4. I don't find the PS4 minimal to be honest, and the OS isn't that slick, it's fucking neon...

Well third parties back to kissing Sony's ass. It's gen 6 all over again.

The Wii wasn't the lead platform though, the 360 was. And lets face it, EA was praising Sony for the install base they have built up in a short period of time for their own games. They are happy that a relevant third party capable system is selling at Wii/PS2 levels so they can actually get software sales. And they do. EA games are selling significantly better on PS4 than Xbox One or PC.

Also PS4 is selling so well because they didn't **** up this time. Notice the PS3 was the exception, not the rule. All the other PlayStations dominated just the same. I'm not being bias or anything, just saying the PS4 has done well to sell this many consoles. DX12 and Win10 may well make Xbox One games look better than PS4 games, and it might make the sales exceed PS4, but for now, PS4 is doing exceptionally well. EA are just acknowledging it.

PS4 sales just show how gullible the consumer is. Gamers are demanding in all the wrong ways. Piss and moan about a couple pixels yet get bent over regarding real issues.

Yes. All the fanboys are screaming "daddy please give me more pixels than xbox" while nobody is questioning the reasoning as to why sony is not offering services available on an older piece of hardware, why if there is less on psn does one have to pay a fee, what exactly is the reasoning behind dlc, this lightbulb on my controller gives it 90 minutes of life--can't there be an option to turn it off?, etc etc etc etc. The big "journalistic" websites don't report on jack shit, the youtube community displays gameplay footage while reading a story followed by "well ya know what I think...blah blah blah, I think sony is right/wrong" etc etc etc.

Nobody seems to be bothered by all this or even notice it. The majority of the gaming community isn't too bright. (generally)
