This is pretty common knowledge. Sony was going to make a CD add-on for the SNES, but the contract fell through. Nintendo had a similar situation with Phillips, which led to some terrible Mario and Zelda games on CD-i.

Yep, designed (in secret) by Kutaragi (almost costing him his job when it was exposed) and it happens to be what gave the SNES such superior audio when compared to the Genesis.

wrong. sony would still be hurting them badly regardless. sony wanted all rights and profits to games on the CD addon. regardless nintendo was completely screwed. either Give sony a bunch of gaming experience and take the chance that they maight bail on them later after raking in all of Nintendos profits for a while, or cut sony out and face a new chalenger. nintendo took the way out that they thought would be easier. they just did it in an extremely mean and underhanded way.

The contract was revised to be more amicable and then Nintendo ducked out, that was definitely stabbing Sony in the back.

Yep, this is when nintendo was very cocky. But i understand why nintendo did it and why Sony got so mad. But i guess it worked out in the end because look at all the great games the PS1&PS2 had, although we also lost the dreamcast, but i'm not contributing the lost due to sony.

Okays i got thinking that most people here talk about how great the playstation is but dont know how it came to be. Im not sure on the dates are but i think i know more or less what happened. In the time of the snes sony was just a electronic compnay and made nothing to do with game console even though that the snes had a sound card built for them by sony but sony themselves was not making or thinking of making consoles. a few years later nintendo asked sony to build them a CD tray so that nintendo will be able to build games and have 600mb (at the time) of space to create them on and also to compete with the sega new cd tray that had been built and being ready to ship. Sony then went to work on building this CD tray for nintendo but said that they want to keep all of the rights to it, as it is them whos making it WHO WOULDNT. well they were going to call the system play station which had the cartridge slot at the top made by nintendo and what seems to be more of an expanson which would sit underneath it which was made by sony. Nintendo was then started to get cold feet that they wasnt going to get the rights to the CD tray so at this time sony had annocuned the play station in Japan (sony at this point still wasnt intrested in making a console just in making the cd tray for nintendo) but at the same time nintendo has gone behind sonys back to philips and asked them to make a CD tray due to not being happy with not getting the rights from sony, sony at this point doesnt even know that anything is going wrong. nintendo then says that they have cancelled the deal with sony and breaks of all ties with them and that they will start working with philips. Sony Now filled with hatered for the back stabing nintendo decides that they will make a console to compete with the two leading consoles at the time the sega and mainly nintendo more or less for revenge. so they started to work on what will be called the playstation they had the CD tray already built so now they just had the make the rest of it. sony then held back until the next wave of consoles before they release any word of the playstation. nintendo feeling pretty good about themselves now then ask philips for the rights just like they did with sony but philips cancels on the deals and stops working with nintendo due to be asked if they can give up the rights to something they made. this then meant that nintendo gave birth to the console N64 which still had to use a cartridge. sony then showed the world its playstation and released not long after creating 1 million sales in the first 3 months

Nintendo and Sony's divorce was a sad moment for little baby calves around the world. But the sheep kept smiling on proud and confident.

it was because of the way they did it not why they did it. It was ugly. I mean really ugly. Nintendo announced an exclusive partnership with phillips the day after sony had just had a huge announcement about their new partnership with nintendo. It was embarassing as hell to sony and shameful on nintendo's part. Sony was being greedy but they didnt deserve that.

"Fell through" is putting it lightly - Nintendo realized the contract would give Sony some rights to produce games for the new unit, so, rather than actually *tell* Sony, Nintendo secretly started negotiations with other companies for the add-on. Sony was working on a project that was already cancelled. It was a *huge* upset - Japanese companies did not screw over other Japanese companies, that's not how they worked.

In the end, it came back to bite Nintendo in the rear, Kutaragi pushed his idea (despite Sony not wanting to go through with it) and the SNES CD add-on device became something that would destroy Nintendo for a decade. Nintendo, with the DS and Wii, has finally recovered its position in Japan, but spending as much time as they spent losing the console war, well, I'm sure there are a few executives over at Nintendo going "that was a bad move".

Nintendo could say NO from the beginning but they did nothing except signing the contract and stabing Sony later.

Can't say I recall the actual revisions, all I've heard is Yamaguchi still considered it unacceptable and knowing him it wouldn't take much for it to be ruled that way.

It was actually a three-way contract between Sony, Nintendo, and Phillips, IIRC, and it was mutually dropped. The first one was unilaterally dropped by Nintendo, but they were in an impossible position, albeit through their own apparent ignorance when they first signed the deal.

They got to the prototype stage most definately. There are pictures of other designs for the machine floating around the internet, and there are some of the very early PS control pads that are very similar to the SNES pad etc...

Its true. Its also called karma. Thats why Nintendo did so poorly during the 64/GC era. Karma to come and bite them in their backstabbing butt.
