Sony will always be one step behind.

Nintendo brings out analog controllers. Sony copies.

Nintendo brings rumble to consoles. Sony copies.

Nintendo introduces Wiimote motion sensing. Sony copies.

Nintendo gives us custom avatar characters (Mii). Sony copies.

Will Sony EVER do something first that will become industry-standard?

Isn't it pretty obvious that Sony had this HOME planned for quite some time ? It looks pretty robust and by the way they designed the ps3 hardware they left themselves some space to pull off these kinds of things.

This.

I also guess Microsoft isn't around, either.

Certainly we'd be able to play games without controls.

hmm

They were the first to use CD over cartridge on games

They were the first to make Playstation franchise into multi-media device

They were the first to create Ebay frenzy for console system. (not a good thing but it is original I guess)

They were the first to sell system at a loss (original buisness plan I guess)

They were the first to use UMD (bad idea but it was original)

Sony have done a lot more than simply copy from Nintendo - that is a very ignorant standpoint to take. The PSOne and PS2 were fine consoles (still not sold on the PS3) - and they (arguably) made the CD-ROM drive, in consoles, industry standard. Oh, and dual analogues.

3DO and Sega CD used CD's first.  Nintendo contracted Sony to make Supernintendo CD which became PS.

I'm not sure how good the other ones are, but i'll give em to ya

Hmmm Well I'll go with the one that sounds more impressive. Wich is the first and they(and Nintendo plans at the time) were definitely not the first ones to do that, make it sucessfull? Yes. First? Nope.

Ok I should change what I said.

I should've said they were the first to have idea of using CD over Cartridge on games.

If what I read a while ago is true, Sony approached Nintendo with add-on for SNES that uses CD, but Nintendo didn't want any part of it, which later on developed into first PS.

And I completely forgot about Sega-CD and 3DO lol Wow brings back good memories of huge number of game systems and add-on that failed miserably (Jaguar anyone? 32X? Virtual Boy?)

No, Nintendo did want to work with sony on a CD addon. They were working on it together until a E3 ( I forgot which year ) Nintendo backstabbed them by announcing that Philips will be developing a CD addon. It caught Sony by surprise at that E3 and they were the object to laugh at that year.
Then Sony came out with the PS1. Who was laughing then

Sony is actually too far ahead like the Sega Saturn was. Sony brought out analog before the N64. It was called the Sony Flightstick (a precursor to the dualshock). Um... Microsoft has rumble too. Sony has tilt sensing, not motion sensing. There was a controller like that that you could use in Warhawk for the PS1. Avatar characters were on the PC first. Sony came up with the idea to use disks instead of cartridges for video games. I believe that became an industry standard.

They created the CD (no explanation necessary as to why this is important) with Philips, among other formats and they started the PlayStation brand, which we all know dominates the console market. I guess they're doing alright. You see, not everybody is a fanboy who uses "copying" as some excuse. When rumble came out on N64, it sucked, just like it's analog stick did. The dual shock was much better. Sony didn't copy Mii, they made something far better. I guess you're not familiar with a little thing called innovation.

Many, if not most, 70s consoles featured an Analog Stick, see under, the VC 4000 ( 1978 ) for more info. In 1982 Atari released the first controller with a potentiometer-based analog stick [2] for their Atari 5200 home console. However, the non-centering joystick design proved to be ungainly and unreliable, alienating many consumers at the time. During that same year, General Consumer Electronics introduced the Vectrex, a vector graphics based system which used a self-centering analog stick, obviously a precursor to the modern design.

Oh, whoops, my bad, I thought mis-read it as Mii's for some reason.

Motion-sensing was done on a Playstation 1 controller before.  I forget what it's called.  EGM or PSM or some magazine rereviewed the controller when the new announcement for the Sixaxis was announced.

Everything on that list Sony didn't simply copy they improved upon them and made them their own. Sony had better Analog, Better rumble, and what appears to be a better Avatar. The only thing that they didn't was motion sensing and that was around way before Nintendo introduced it.
