Played it when it first came out and after checking it out recently, I think it still holds up quite well. It's one of the most violent shooters of all time; Blood, Broken body parts, Screams, Big explosions, Terrifying dying animations and so on. Combine that with excellent gunplay, variety of different levels (ranging from streets to jungles) and a compelling plot and you get Soldier of Fortune 2. The series is forgotten and there wasn't any new one after SOF 3, which I think wasn't as good as the second one (never played the third one but didn't hear praise either). Would love to have a new one in this era when Shooters are slowly going back to their roots.

Have you played this game? If yes, then do you want the series to continue? If not then, it's highly recommended for any Shooter fan.

I quite liked it. I mean, I know everybody goes on about how gross it is, but I thought it was a legit fun FPS.

Whenever I think of this game, I think of my childhood self being wowed by the fact you were able to shoot the limbs off people.

Fun times they were!

Soldier of Fortune 3. Now there's a forgotten game. People hardly know that game even exists !

Yeah, but I very much enjoyed Soldier of Fortune 2. I even liked the first one but the second is just a way better shooter overall.

Both games had pretty insane gore for their times. But the second one even had grass technology where the grass would sway in the wind. Still remember seeing that. Mind = blown.

Nowadays I'm looking at hundreds of trees swaying in the distance in The Witcher 3 as just a normal occurrence in a game.

I used to love this game, dissecting people with guns never got old.

I remember in the first game blowing the guys legs off with a shotgun while he pissed in the urinal, for my younger self at the time that gave me quite a laugh.

Soldier of Fortune 2 is pretty good, don't know about masterpiece, and don't need a sequel.

Do something new or more of a spiritual successor.

Killing Floor 2's gore system was inspired by Soldier of Fortune it would be awesome if Rising Storm 2 Vietnam gets the gore system.

Do you recommend Soldier of Fortune 3? I didn't play it. Is it as good as the second one?

Yeah, I heard them mentioning that. KF 2 has easily the best gore system I've ever seen in a shooter (if not every game).

Only played the original Soldier of Fortune game many years back (indeed I haven't though of it for a while), remember blasting people in the guts and watching their entrails spill out while they tossing around on the ground writhing in pain... brutal shit, heard they catered to the interests of overprotective mama bears and toned down the violence in later games, is that true? This certainly doesn't look as violent as the first game.

Meh, even through nostalgia glasses i still vividly remember those awful stealth sections.

Technologically this game was dope. As a game, it was all over the place.

Raven did make a masterpiece game back in the day, but it wasn't called Soldier Of Fortune.

It was called Jedi Outcast.

Never got too far in this game, only a little after a helicopter truck chase level. I thought the first game was better, if only because the bloody dismemberment was such a novelty at the time. That butcher level in the first game was truly disturbing...

One of the best games when using grenades... something satisfying about someone turning into meat and blood and chunks up the walls and on the ceiling.

Why has no other game tried to copy it?

It's what Bethesda should incorporate in Fallout 4

Like if you hit someone in the face with a shotgun blast in VATS from 10-15 yards away, it rips off half their face instead of blowing off their entire head.

I also miss its developers, Raven Software - top notch devs and a seal of quality back in the day. Now they're relegated to making DLC for CoD. Btw SOF 2 is the very reason why using a shotgun in Resident Evil 4 onwards has been so spineless and devoid of power with just one big hitbox. To me there was nothing as satisfying as hearing the tissue being torn down as you blew somebody's head off.

Played this on the original Xbox. I remember feeling like a badass because it was R18 but the video store guy still let me rent it at 14 years old :P.

I remember a really cool feature where you could load random single player maps with your own custom settings?

Have you played The Dark Project? All 3 games come together as trilogy. First one has better plot and atmosphere than Thief 2... But Thief 2 has bigger and better levels.

I'm only playing Thief 2. Been a long time since I've played an 'old' game so its definitely requiring some 'getting used to'. I'll see if I get around to playing all of them.

Yeah man, if anything: It's Raven that has been forgotten. Not this game.

They made some true classics like Jedi Knight, Soldier of Fortune and RTCW. But because their last two games failed to meet sales expectations, Activision shrunk down the studio a lot and they only thing they are allowed to make anymore is maps for the COD game Activision wants to put out every year... Ugh.

This game is not actually "Soldiers of Fortune" but Chaos Engine. Maybe it was renamed for the Genesis but that's not its original name. I played it over 20 years ago on Amiga and I revisited it again like 10 years ago - held up very well.

Have you played it @freedomfreak @jg4xchamp ???

I see you are US-based, so that's why there is this difference in names.

It was first released for the Commodore Amiga, with a version available for AGA Amigas, and later ported to MS-DOS, the Super Nintendo Entertainment System, Atari ST, Amiga CD32, RISC OS and Sega Mega Drive platforms. In the SNES and Sega versions, the character The Preacher had his clerical collar removed and was renamed The Scientist. The U.S. versions of these two ports were retitled Soldiers of Fortune.

It was the second game for the RtCW clan I was in, must have put a god couple of hundred hours into it.

It replaced Kingpin when that ultimately died.

YES OP YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS!!!!!!!!!

It truly is a masterpiece. I loved the multiplayer, probably best corridor fps mulitplayer ever imo.

One of the best fps's for sure.
