I've been watching quite a few people play the first game since the sequel was announced, and godamn, the majortiy of people really did not like this game, heck even hated it. What was it that urked everyone so much?

Really?..doesn't seem like it to me...they are quite alot of people who enjoyed it... I am one. :) Looking forward to EW2. :P
Its gotten a lot of advertisement and the surrounding hype didn't meet the games standards. Despite some gameplay issues and the hiccups in the story, I didn't find the game bad at all. I especially liked the DLC and I'm looking forward to the sequel. But I'm not extremely hyped for it.
I really enjoyed the game myself but I don't recall hearing a lot of hate about the game. Maybe they did and I just never came across it, I don't know.
because Shinji Mikami is attached to it, simply because of who he is people set their expectations through the roof and when it couldn't live up to those expectations it was panned
It's my favorite game this gen. No joke. I absolutely adore it. I'd think that if people hate it, it is that, for the most part, they are hating on Mikami, and not the game itself.
They wanted The Evil Within to be a Casual Game(Games with a little difficulty/learning curve) like Resident Evil games.
it's silent hills X resident evil
let silent hill be silents hills and make resident evil like resident evil.
Actually The Evil Within is a Much Better Game Than Overrated Team Silent Silent Hill Games.(Which had a Pretty Terrible and non enjoyable gameplay)
May give it another try as brought the game but only for the Art Work. I didn't like the controls as it felt clunky and unresponsive if my memory is correct.
It also controlled Horribly on a Controller.(Unlike Keyboard and Mouse) which is the main reason the majority of players(that are console gamers) hated it.
I literally never seen/read/heard anyone saying they hated TEW... some saying its bad/disappointing but hate? nope, never
@moistcarrot: I actually loved the game, it reminded me a lot of what I loved in Resident Evil 4. Personally I can't wait for the sequel. I just hope they improve a few things.
2 reasons.
1) Firstly the game was designed by Shinji Mikami - the resident Evil creator 1-4. So they wanted a survival horror experience and we not fans that the game progressively, became a bit action heavy towards the end.
2) The games difficulty. it really did spike up and down, and could even be ruthless at times. However, instead of admitting the game was too hard for them, was easier to just say it was shit and too action heavy.
I personally LOVED the game. It was harder in some areas than I would have liked, but overall it was a work of art. I'm looking forward to TEW2 :)
@Shmiity: The Evil Within was inspired by RE 4, just like the Way that RE 4 was just a Resident evil game with:
1.Behind the Shoulder Camera.
2.Splinter Cell Style precise Aiming(but without movement).
3.Shenmue style QTEs.
4.and some martial arts moves.
Because "durrr, has guns, not survival horror enough, shallow casual shooter, you should only get 3 bullets you never use because in survival horror you should only be running away the whole time passing enemies and knife killing the ones you do engage with, derp derp", something like that.
I took on Evil Within after completing Alien Isolation on its hardest difficulty. So I'm all in for hard games. I make all the From Software games my biznitch so Evil Within's difficulty was not a problem for this gamer of all gamers.
What I took issue with is the game's' insistence we can play anyway we want and yet the level design tells another story. Stealth? Limited ammo? Bring it on! But then the game gives you hordes of villains to wade through and worse, there are many areas where you have no other option but to kill the enemy or all said enemies using your very limited inventory and struggling with the game's' awkward controls and camera angles. All without any warning beforehand that MAYBE you should have been a little more frugal with your bullets and arrows. In a sense, the game design is battling itself and I, the gamer, stand in the middle. I was able to push through the majority of the game despite the frequent frustrations.
It was the lock head boss that finally made me throw in the towel. You throw me into a forced boss battle with limited ammo and no way to prepare for it beforehand. Instead my only option was to restart the entire area over again with this knowledge in advance. Right. Because that's fair game design.
"I don't NEED to finish this!" I proudly declared. I'm not one to leave games unfinished, mind you. But I gave myself permission to leave this one because it just was not following its own rules. I don't even think the game HAS any rules. It wants to be so many different games it can't decide which one.
It also controlled Horribly on a Controller.(Unlike Keyboard and Mouse) which is the main reason the majority of players(that are console gamers) hated it.
I never tried it on controller, but it controlled quite well with mouse and keyboard, for sure. Beat it on hard and enjoyed it.
@Bread_or_Decide: In my 2 playthroughs (normal and hard difficulty) I never ran out of Ammo . you should have played the PC version that didn't have the camera and movement issues.

I realize everyone's experience with the game will be different.
I loved it overall I just wasn't a big fan of the stealth-heavy areas. I want to go through the dlc asap , too many games on my plate now. I just started a Necro character in Diablo 3, great fun....from far away he looks a little like Alucard, I like him already

Thats the whole problem. That game came out 12 years ago. Mikami is just rehashing his own old ideas.
I really liked the game. Gameplay wise, it feels like what RE5 would have been if he didnt leave Capcom. So its pretty much a sequal to RE4 gameplay wise. I wasnt too fond of the story though. It really didnt make a whole lot of sense to me. I dont like the psychological horror aspect of the story. Its like he was inspired more from the silent hill series in the story department than RE. But I did enjoy the game and Im excited for the sequel.
I'm just bad at that game. I don't blame the devs tough.
But I HATED the letterbox res and the low fps on consoles. Was kinda unplayable at launch for me, bought the collectors edition and sold it after 3 days playing it.
Credit to you for being able to admit that. not having a go, I think it's great self awareness and I agree about the console versions. I had the PC game, and I was so glad I could not only remove the borders, but it also gave you the option to remove that grain effect as well.
@Shmiity: But The Evil Within isn't just a clone of RE 4. It's Much Different than that. it has Stealth , Stamina Meter , More emphasize on Booby Traps and Horror compare to RE 4.
I hated the game. I bought it only seeing the first few trailes that looked like it was going to be a decent horror gaqme. Turned out to be yet another boring Zombie game
People ****** about anything, TEW was basically what RE4 first tried to do before it became the RE4 we know, which makes TEW better than RE4.
