So... what could stop DS2 from getting GOTY this year

In my opinion, Dark Souls 2 is an unquestionable GOTY, a pure master piece. Greatly improved over its predecesors. I have 50 hours in and still counting. I couldn't fully apreciate the quality of DS1 since the gaming comunity for it was too small at launch. But now, when DS2 is bustling on PC with 60k of concurrent gamers on daily basis, I couldn't help but fall in love for this game. An online play and community for DS2 is just amazing.

And the game world and lore itself are just magical.

So what game could possibly steal the GOTY award from Dark Souls 2 this year ? Since Witcher 3 and Star Citizen were delayed until 2015, I don't see many contenders that could threaten Dark Souls 2.

Watchdogs possibly, but I doubt that.

Whenever a solid statement like OP is made, all the haters come out in droves yet no one can provide an answer.. It's definitely not going to be titanfall. Destiny is a LONG shot... maybe some random indie game is all the DS haters can hope for

The game is too similar to its predecesors, that's why GS won't name it GOTY.

As for what other game could win? maybe Watch Dogs, or who knows, but i really doubt Dark Souls 2 will win GOTY.

As for your question, I am not sure what game this year could be better. Watch Dogs doesn't look that special, but we will see. Maybe E3 will give us some answers.

It has 0% chance of winning. It's real similar to DS1, just a little worse (according to KevV). There's is no chance in hell it will win on GS.

Well...I am pretty good at this game and I die very rarely. For me, it was more like a long journey: running forward to see new locations, collect new pieces of lore, discover hidden treasures and paths and meet the best depressing NPCs ever : ) Also helping other players along the way or invading them if I feel like being evil.

And those NPCs were SO depressing... Seriously what a group of bring-you-down bums.

Dark Souls didn't see too hard once you "get" the combat, but I just got tired of the same old routine every time. Just not my kind of game, I like surprises. Dark Souls didn't offer me many of those. At least, not after the first time it happened. It removed the allure of the game world for me.

Obviously the most Popular game would win. So naturally Dark Souls is out of the running, no matter how good it is. Its just not as catchy as it once was when Dark Souls 1st came out.

You can bet your money on something like Arkham Knight or Watch Dogs simpler because they are much more popular.

Destiny could if it ends up being fantastic, other than that I'm not sure. Star Citizen isn't "out" until 2016, none of the rest of the space sims hitting this year are GotY material. Wildstar Online will be fantastic but not GotY material. All of the FPSs have been pretty big disappointments lately. Titanfall doesn't stand a chance.

It will depend on how some of the holiday 2014 games fair.

You can't underestimate the power of new car smell. I highly doubt a sequel will beat Dark Souls 2 though.

Us vets realize that the D Souls games are great, but that Demons Souls still remains the pinnacle of the series...which is also reflected in its being awarded goty in '09.

Dark Souls 2 is good, but there are some elements that are a step down...particularly the bosses. They're definitely the worst of the series so far.

The combat is better than DS1, however. There's actually a reason to not want to be hollow in ds2, where in 1, there was no penalty. But still, Demons Souls was still more hardcore, in that your life was almost halved in soul form.

Bringing back some DeS elements was nice. Being able to fight with the Mirror Knight against a player was cool...but DeS still did it better, where you were actually the last boss of a level, and could halt the progress of a player's campaign if you were good enough...until they disconnected.

There's other things dark souls 1 and 2 haven't done as well. Weapon balance, no stealth builds, the final bosses if both D1 and D2 pail in comparison to DeS False King fight.

But it's a good game, but can understand how newcomers, and pc beggars, who haven't experienced DeS, can glaze over. Definitely not goty worthy but a good game.

With The Last of Us remastered dropping this year....gonna be the game to beat for another year.

Still nice that pc gamers have something to play other than indies.

So far I think this has a shot, nothing out there to dethrone it. And there are enough new elements to keep it fresh in the eyes of gamespot, forced PvP areas, easier convenant system to understand and rank, expanded co-op, farming to extinction.... and as with all of the souls game, lore and setting is amazing.

SSB4, that's what. But so far DaS2 is the best game of 2014, without a doubt.

Diablo 3: Reaper of Souls, DKC: Tropical Freeze, South Park, Child of Light, Mario Kart 8, Bayonetta 2, Smash, X, Dragon Age 3, Arkham Knight, Watch Dogs, and Assassin's Creed all look like better games.

Yup. I tried to get into it, but other games tore me away. Titanfall being the major time sink for me.

No way is DS2 GOTY. That has about as much a chance at winning as assassin's creed and call of duty.

It may be a great game but the WOW factor is gone. Demons Souls won GOTY because it took everyone by surprise.

As of right now DS2 is the GOTY, but that can quickly change seeing as how there are 7 months or so to go.

What I've played of DK: TF and DS 2 already sets back DS 2 from GOTY so anything could happen. :/

I beat the game and regret buying it. Dark Souls 2 is not a fun game so pretty much any game that is polished and fun should take it
