So wait... Who was second place last gen?

I thought it was either a tie or the 360 barely was ahead, and while I look at numerous gaming boards and news sites and see a lot of that being said, there are also others sites saying the PS3 outsold it. So it seems people still don't know who was first HD place.

That gen is still rolling along in sales , games , and services. Winner = to be determined

Okay, then here is the answer. According to Sony fanboys, PS3 won; according to 360 fanboys, 360 won.

Most likely they are pretty much tied, plus you gotta figure out how many PS2 sales were included in reported sales numbers and also decide when you're going to stop counting

Xbox 360 was ahead after the last announcements Sony & Microsoft made. There hasn't been any further announcements since that time last year. So no really knows who's ahead at this point. The XBox 360 had hit 80 million in October and PS3 had 80 million in November. That's all we know.

Both MS and Nintendo went from selling 20-25 million consoles each the previous generation to edging Sony out of their 150 million console market dominance. In part both companies made strategic decisions that gained them an edge, but the biggest factor was probably the mistakes Sony made.

It was pretty close in sales from what I remember... So close, that the offset in quarterly releases between Sony and MS, essentially made it a tie.

Some will say the gen is still going because the consoles are still selling. I don't. Gen changed, last one's competition is done imo. All I know is the Wii spanked the others, and this gen the PS4 is spanking the others.

The Highest PC sales of all the years from 2005-Nov2013 was Dell with 73 million PC's sold including laptops according to their October report (Does not include clones or unofficial sales). For your PC comment to make sense, you would have to combine all makes, which is nonsense.

As for the Wii comment, I did include the Wii that's why oit says second place, and I made a first HD place joke because the HD consoles are fighting for second and the media keeps separating them.

As of November 2013, Xbox 360 was still in second place since it was announced that Xbox 360 crossed the 80 million mark about a month earlier than the PS3 was announced to have crossed the 80 million mark in November. Whether or not PS3 managed to catch up with Xbox 360 over the past 4 months, nobody can say for sure since we have no official numbers.

Really, they are so close to each other in sales that it doesn't matter who is slightly ahead; it can pretty much be considered a tie. I think the more important thing to look at is how much market share they gained/lost this gen. Sony lost over half of their market share from the previous generation while Microsoft tripled their market share by converting many former PlayStation fans, so I'm sure Microsoft was much happier with how the generation went than Sony was.

Id say the 360 as even tho sales were almost identical microsoft almost quadrupled its user based from the previous gen while sony lost half of theirs.

The Xbox 360 dominated for the first half of the generation no doubts, but near the end the PS3 did come back hard. I'd say it deserves to be a tie, they both did extremely well.

A. Wii got third party support, and a lot of great gems in the process. Exclusives, nonetheless.

B. It's obvious TC isn't referring to a system winning because of their software lineup.

Wii outsold both. Cows and lems argued an entire generation over 2nd place. Lame.

It was a tie pretty much. The systems reached the same sales milestone within 1 month of each other. So most likely a draw.

If the "end" of the generation is taken as the launch of the Wii U (beginning of "next gen") then the 360 was in second place.

When the next gen started 360 was almost 2 million ahead. and is still about 2 million ahead now.

I think PS3, I don't know. There is currently no factual evidence that PS3 outsold Xbox 360 or vise versa, other than VGChartz.

But when it comes to game library.

PS3 > Wii > Xbox 360

The last sales figures I've seen before the new consoles launched.....though that doesn't negate sales by the way.....were both at 80 million +. No way you can say the 360 was ahead. Tied at least......though I have heard the PS3 surpassed it....I'll use the last stats I've seen and say we can't say.

As long as none of them are VGChartz.com. You really can go by websites because they are never accurate. When Microsoft & Sony announced their 80 million sold, VGChartz sales numbers weren't even close.

Wii destroyed both, PS3 managed to match 360 despite being a year late. Pretty funny in retrospect.

You can still have more multiple generations active during a period of time.

PS3 and Sony for starting the race a year later and catching the 360 in sales. It was MS's race to lose to Sony and they managed to.

Yes.. the wii finished in first place with nearly NO software releases the last two years of the cycle. Those aren't bragging rights friend.
