...was that whole "too much work to make a female character" line just a white lie that inadvertently blew up in their faces?

I think Ubisoft was saving that female character as a surprise for fans of the series but PR handled that very poorly so they had no choice but to talk about it.

Needs to happen more. I would love to play as a female assassin or a female thug in GTA. Would be a different take on things.

Point is, I don't really care one way or the other.

Of course they did, we're talking about games media here, they're slowly morphing into mainstream media and just exaggerating any tiny little non story to make it seem like there's a big controversy when there's actually nothing.

I do think Ubisoft were incredibly stupid to give such a crap reason though, they should have just stuck with the usual "a female character didn't really fit with the story we're telling".

well, considering they only spend about a year making each game when rushing a game like this it probably does stress resources to add stuff like this in last minute when it wasn't in the initial design, I guess in the end they made room to do it but IMO it isn't that big of deal since it's just for the online mode, and I personally could care less about the online mode, though fun for some time seems to exist at the expense of the single player game and in that sense I'd rather they just do away with it

AC Unity's main character is male, that is what the story revolves around. They want to have co op to be seamless and part of the single player experience, meaning everyone will be the same character BECAUSE THEY ARE ALL PLAYING THE SAME CAMPAIGN.

It doesn't make sense to develop a playable female character. That would mean developing an entirely different romantic situation, thousands of different dialogue situations, a new model, different animations.... It's just nonsensical that this is a problem. Shows how inconsiderate and ignorant people are these days.
