Yes better than the PS2. Yes better than the Dreamcast. Yes better than the N64 and PS1. Yes better than the WiiU.

Why? A library of amazing games. No other reason. It looked like shit and the controller was meh. Didn't play music or movies. So it had to rely on it's games alone. That's why I don't care how many features the PS4 has over the Xbox One or vice versa, if the library isn't as good, point is moot.

But games like:

Axelay

Chrono Trigger

Contra III

Donkey Kong Country

Final Fantasy VI

F-Zero

Killer Instinct

Kirby's Dream Land

Mega Man X

Mickey's Magical Quest

Pilot Wings

Primal Rage

Secret Of Mana

Star Fox

Super Castlevania IV

Super Mario Kart

Super Mario World

Super Metroid

Super Punch Out!!

The Legend Of Zelda - A Link to the Past

Yoshi's Island

...are what make me realize just how amazing the system was. There are many more, but I can't be dealing with how good some of that shit I listed really is. Why can't a single game top Super Metroid's level design? It's progression? We have had decades to brush up on our chops, but nothing comes close.

So when Nintendrones tell me that the latest Mario games and the latest Zeldas, Metroids are the best, I refer them to the Super Nintendo where not only Nintendo peaked, but game design as a whole did.

Do you disagree.

The Super Nintendo is rad, better than genesis. Get rekt Aljosa/Renegade/Thatotherdude

But I'd probably lean towards some of the stuff I played on PS2.

Yeah PS2 always comes up in this debate. I love it and think it probably did have more great games, but the best games and my favorites were on the SNES.

I won't argue.

It's one part bad ass library, one part nostalgia, but I love that damn system above all others. When I'm dipping into retro games, I'm usually playing SNES titles more than anything else.

But bro, both the PS1 and PS2 had more and better games in every genre you can think off. So that excuse of "Snes had the best library" really don't hold off beyond fanboy drivel, preference or nostalgia.

The Genesis for me for lots of reasons, including a 100+ game list that I could, but won't copy and paste. That, and the SNES would choke to death trying to run magnificent software such as Alien Soldier and Battle Mania: Daiginjou.

It's either the SNES or the PS2. I give the SNES the edge for having ALTTP, SMW, and Super Metroid.

Y'know, right now, I give it to the 360. Hardware issues aside (a big aside), the amount of games and features it has make it a fantastic console. It won't get its credit for a while, but it'll be looked back at as a tremendous console.

It kind of feels like the Ps2 of the 7th generation, but on top of that it was the multiplat box, which certainly wasn't the case for Ps2. And I love custom soundtracks.

@bobrossperm: You mean the SNES?

The NES was the best because it saved the video game industry and re-invented video games. There was not thing like Super Mario Bros, The Legend Of Zelda, or Metroid before Nintendo made them.

SNES just mastered both quality and quantity. Rarely if ever did I actually play an SNES game and think "this sucks". All the RPG's, fighting games, platformers, beat em ups, the sound design which was superior in those days, first console with transparencies I believe...plus there's Cybernator, Hagane, Super Ninja Boy, Undercover Cops, Final Fight 1,2,3, Final Fantasy 3, Chrono Trigger, Secret of Evermore etc....Square absolutely beasted on the SNES....I definitely agree with this thread.

Nope, the PS2 was objectively the greatest console of all time. Has the greatest software library that is still relevant to this day.

As much as I love Genesis... and I do! I was a sega kid before I got a SNES. I gotta agree. Its library has never been matched. And the games were just so.... good. It makes this generation look like a bucket of puke.

For a single console in the 16-bit era, maybe. But I spent 90% of the time gaming on the others. The combined cart/CD library (including imports) of the Genesis and Turbografx blew the SNES out of the water.

The PS1, and a lot of that generation sucks.

The SNES era stuff be it the Snes or the genesis actually holds, hence why the PS2 actually has an argument. The classics of gen 6 are legit terrific, the PS1 classics are shorter in number.

oh man mickeys magical quest was one of the first games I played on Snes, that and lawnmower man. Holy shit Lawnmower man was one of the hardest games I've ever played, those fucking horrible VR stages.

Super Nintendo is definitely my top pick as well, amazing library with very little filler.

My order would probably be Snes, Ps1, Ps2, n64, gamecube, dreamcast, ps3.

Haven't a lot of PS2 games aged badly? Not as bad as many N64 games, but I'm curious to owners of the PS2 if a lot of games are outdated, as it seems that a lot of SNES games seem rather timeless, at least in graphics that don't burn our eyes with ugliness. Anyways, I would agree that the SNES is the greatest even if some, or even most, of the games aren't as fun anymore to some people nowadays.

Yep.

PS1 classics I still enjoy playing

  • Symphony of the Night
  • Final Fantasy Tactics
  • ?

SNES games I still enjoy playing.

  • Dozens of the them.

-

Imo the best aspect of the PS1 was its rpgs. Thing is, not only is the SNES just as strong (if not stronger) in that regard, but the SNES rpgs are so much easier to go back and play. Unlike PS1 rpgs which are mostly bloated mess eye sores with terrible load times. It was excusable at the time for the jump in production values, but nobody wants to trudge through most of that shit these days.

yo the PS1 jrpgs don't hold a candle to the stuff on the snes. Chrono Trigger, FFV and 6 (shut up, the rest of us can still play 5 after), Terranigma, Secrets of Mana, > butthole ass FF7, butthole ass FF8, FF9 was kind of cool, Xenogears has a garbage second disc, chrono cross is wack, Vagrant Story is pretty rad though. Should put that one in the classics pile. And Silent Hill. And Metal Gear Solid : >

Absolutely. In my opinion, Zelda: A Link to the Past and Super Metroid are in the top 5 games of all time for me. This console, the games it presented at the time, was brilliant.

The best part is that there were games that you'd never see happen this generation on them. There is no way the twins would fund them. Secret of Evermore, Robotrek, Final Fight, SF2, Turtles in Time, Stunt Race FX etc. What was the name of that one game where you played unicycles and raced along a horizontal line?

I'm on a replay of FFV right now. My first taste of it was with the anthologies collection back on PS1, but I'm appreciating it more these days.

And yeah, Terranigma, I was late to the party on that one. Really damn good game, sucks that it never got a proper state side release way back when.

@Renegade_Fury:

Alien Soldier is a great looking game but Yoshi's Island tops it. I know Genesis excelled in many genres as far as speed goes but I also have never seen it render something like Donkey Kong Country's Snow Barrel Blast segment. Also, there are parts in Super Metroid that make Alien Soldier look rather slow.

...both paled in comarison to Neo Geo, though.

Holy shit Quintet was awesome, Illusion of Gaia and soul blazer were also good, not as good as terranigma but still. I still need to check out Granstream Saga.

Yeah man, Terranigma is legit as ****. If it would have had a proper release in the states I'm sure it would be on many gamers top SNES games lists.

Hell, it might have been you that got me to try it, can't remember. Pretty sure it was you and Eroica that got me to check out ActRaiser though, another cool game that almost fell through the cracks. Glad I gave it a try.
