http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-05-20-xbox-ones-skype-app-is-now-finally-snappable

Microsoft have been really snappy with their updates as of late, conjuring them out of thin air as if by snapping their fingers. That being said, this feature should've been included a long time ago, but I can understand that it also required the ability to apply different volume levels for snapped/main apps which was included in the most recent system update, etc., etc.

That being said, I think this coupled with Paywall-free apps will finally make Xbox One incredibly useful for those who work at different hours than their spouses and have several hours to spend on playing video games while their wives are away. Just like me. I can easily imagine conversations like this (courtesy of one brilliant Eurogamer commenter):

Jodie, honey. we've been connected for over 9 minutes now... You can see I'm trying to Play Forza here, please leave me alone.

I don't like the idea of snapping app. It wakes up waaaaaaaaaaay too much real estate. IMO

Can you use the headset with it now? I've had issues with Kinect. The person on the other end can't hear me too well.

@Kaze_no_Mirai: Chatting on Skype using the headset has always been possible as far as I know.. I do prefer to use the Kinect though since it's hands-free.. Everyone I chat with says I sound great using the Kinect so if you're having problems maybe you should try to recalibrate the microphone. I have really high ceilings with an open layout in my living room and I still don't have any issues with Kinect voice chat..

On topic, using Skype while gaming is a killer feature for me.. True video chat for gaming consoles has finally arrived in my opinion. Video chat has been possible for quite some time now on consoles, but now that I can do so while playing a game, watching Netflix, or whatever else makes the functionality infinitely more useful.. Also being able to do video chat while playing competitive games and see your buddies' reactions in real-time is pretty awesome lol..

Now all we need is a Skype app for PS4 so we can have some true cross-platform chat. Twitch is already a good step since I can watch and chat with my PS4 friends from my Xbox One Twitch app while they stream gameplay, Skype would take that to the next level if it's implemented properly on the PS4..

Good stuff..

@Antwan3K: is there anything you need to do to get it to work? I've tried it before but no sound comes out through the headset only the TV and it still uses the Kinect mic. I've tried calibrating Kinect multiple times and it does improve but not by much.

Guess it depends how big the TV is and how vital the app is. I like the idea of it for opening up a web browser if you get stuck, but other than that it's not something I think I'd ever use.

microsoft owns skype so it may never end up on a sony console.

Having Skype snappable so while I'm watching a game or even TV and I can quickly call up a pal or two or talk to my wife when she's out of town working is pretty cool. I can do all of those things via voice command from the couch, and that's a nice feature to have IMHO.

@lawlessx: Skype is already on the PS Vita and I'm fairly sure I read an article about Microsoft being open to bringing Skype to the PS4. With them bringing MS Office to the iPad, I think Microsoft is really trying to bring their services to as many people as possible..

I do understand that having Skype is a bullet point for the Xbox One but even as a fan of the console, I'd like them to bring the app over to PS4.. as a gamer, I'd like to see as much cross-platform interaction as possible. But you are right, there's a good chance that this won't happen..

@Kaze_no_Mirai: nope there's nothing special you have to do. Just plug the headset into your controller and it automatically enables chat through the headset instead of the Kinect..

Yeah it really depends on your situation & tv setup, it is not for everyone. For me it is great because my family loves talking to me with it rather than using a phone or something else, you have a big view of the entire room with Kinect, works great with Skype, almost feels like you are there with the person on the other line.

I have never used Skype on any platform. I would love to with distant relatives. I haven't the patients guiding them through the process.

Me: Push any button on the keyboard.

Them: Where's the any button?

Tired joke, I know. That is the closest way for me to describe it though.
