Should I upgrade my PC or wait?

I've been trying to decide whether to upgrade or not for a while now. I've been waiting on the new line of graphics cards to come out but there is no real release date from AMD or Nvidia and there are rumors that the GeForce 800 series may not be released until 2015.

I currently have a GeForce 660 Ti, Core i7, and 8 GB of Ram. I can play pretty much everything maxed out at 1080p with the exception of a few games that I'll take down a couple notches so I can play at 60fps. With Watch Dogs and some other games coming out this year I probably won't be able to turn up all of the graphics settings that I'd like to.

So my question to you is should I upgrade to something like a 780 or just be patient and wait on the new AMD and Nvidia offerings?

I think a 780 would last you for a good amount of time and it will probably come down in price when the 800 series releases. Personally, I'd look for sales for the 780, but at the end of the day it's your call.

Wait. Try those games out on that card. You should be fine. Recommended settings aren't 100% truthful because they want you to buy cards so they over recommend. You might very well be able to get 30fps stable on ultra which is very playable. Or turn it down some to hit 60fps. Either way you will get better visuals and performance than consoles. But I'd give some of these "next-gen" games a try on your rig first before I go out and buy a new card. You might be surprised by your performance.

Yeah that's what I'm leaning towards. I'd be kind of pissed if I bought a 780 or 290x and then find out the new cards are coming out in a month. I definitely want to see what the new line of cards can do with Mantle and the new Nvidia API. The 660 Ti is still a solid card too, I've been impressed by the performance I get out of it.

NewEgg is selling this upgrade kit now. I have and i would give it a solid 2/5.

Buy the game first. If it chugs, upgrade. If the game runs fine, then hold off and save some money. There's nothing wrong with being reactive instead of proactive.

660ti is good graphics card . It will serve you well . Wait .

If you need to scratch an itch, stick another 8Gb of RAM in it. There is no need though, your PC is fine for now.

Just remember that you can always sell your 660ti on ebay. When I upgraded from my 560ti to a 7870, it only ended up costing me $30--the GPU was $180 with a $50 rebate, and I got $100~ for my 560ti on ebay.

If the 660 is working fine for you then just wait

Just wait until more "next gen multiplats" come out and see how they run on your current card.

Star Citizen will be a new benchmark for PC games... wait until thats at least in beta or something.

I Agree with this. Your 660ti is a great card, I would play the game first and see if it performs well enough for you. If not, I would grab a 680, 770, or a 780 for less money depending on your location. You can really get great deals. I'm currently using a gtx 770 myself. These cards are more than enough to run these "Next-gen" games.

well news is , the 800 series will be between 780 and 780ti.. The r9's already there and higher..

Wait, you still have a pretty decent setup. Only upgrade if you actually need to or if something breaks.

Yeah I've considered the r9 as well. And where did you hear that the 800 series was between the 780 and 780 Ti? I thought it was supposed to be a pretty significant leap in performance, more so than the jump from the 600 series to the 700 series.You may be thinking of the 880m for laptops, which is already out. It's supposed to have performance similar to the 780 and 780 Ti. From what I understand, the 800 series for desktops will be significantly better than this notebook version.

Also thanks for all of the input guys, I think I'm just going to wait with all of the responses I got. The 660 Ti is still going strong. I just wish Nvidia and AMD could give some kind of release window. The 800 series was supposed to be released the first quarter of this year but keeps getting pushed back.

Be better off selling it. Desktops are relics.

Here's a Tip, don't upgrade just yet, new generation consoles are still maturing and we still haven't seen anything on those Consoles that Crysis 3 hasn't done, I have a 670 that is running my games at 1600p and that with a nice overclock it runs games pretty dam well I get 60 Fps on BF4 with almost everything on Ultra (Nvidia miraculous drivers helped on that one), any how you shouldn't have the need to upgrade at all for at least another year, wait 2015 will be a leap year in my opinion, more UE4 games will be out and Devs will that to seriously pushing the new Consoles hardware, and that will impact PC Gaming has well, next generation of Graphics card should give a nice boost in performance has well, buying a 780 Ti or not would be a bad bet at this point if you are already running a 660 Ti that card is not bad at all and for 1080p is more then enough for now if anything invest in some faster DDR3(Try to always use 2 sticks for better performance, 2 sticks > 4 Sticks) has that will give you a nice boost to, ram speed affects the performance of high texture dependent games, BF4 being a great example of that.

you mean you dont have the very latest and greatest hardware for your PC? your games must be unplayable. the older a graphics card gets the slower it gets even with the same games...absolute FACT!

i spent 2 grand on a laptop with a 780M. the 880M has since been released which is a massive 15% faster so that whole laptop is being scrapped and another 2k is going on the new one (desktops are not an option for me). this is the only way to play games on a PC..FACT!.

note: the above contains no facts what so ever and is complete nonsense :P.

i would also echo the advice of others here...wait. if your happy with the current performance of your rig then there is no point upgrading. wait till these new games come out..see how your PC holds up and take any necessary action to fix any problems if they come up.

So are consoles. Tablets are where the action is.

Wait for what? The second coming of St. Hubbins? For all you know, you'll be a maggoty, fly-blown corpse concealed under some brush by the side of an obscure country road one month from now. Enjoy life while you can. There's no bigger waste of time or of life than sitting and waiting, for no good reason, to do something you really want to do.

I would wait for the summer or something, like later in the summer (July-August) for a deal on a gaming desktop.

Or you could wait til Black Friday. Not sure if you want to go that route, but the bulk of games that come out are going in November and December so definitely wait.

I have to concur with the majority here, with your specs, it's better to wait at this point. You don't have to update for a long time to play new games.

Well 5 things on this topic

1) maxwell 20 nm isnt coming till at least next year.. If maxwell releases this year it will be on 28 nm.

2) I dont expect the 28 nm maxwell to be faster than the 780ti, else it will undercut the sales of that card. It will be between 780 and 780ti

3) the first generation of maxwell cards coming out will mainly only see improvements in power usage

4) the best 800m versions for laptops aren't even as strong as the regular gtx 760.. M version gpu's never match their desktop versions. They give the illusion that they play games well because laptops run at lower resolution.

5) I'd say its probably best to wait , the 660ti will get you thru of course, but everything on pc is always going to be "the next best thing". As you upgrade there is better coming after that very shortly.. Just thought i'd inform you that the first version of maxwell wont be too impressive. When the 20nm comes then we will see a true next gen leap.. I'd say its about 8 months or more from now. The first batch of 28nm maxwell cards however might arrive very soon

A second 660 Ti in SLI could be a cheap temp solution until the next gen of cards. You will most likely be able to buy a second card super cheap used. I am running 670 SLI and there are only a few games that I can not max and hold 60 fps. I am tempted to buy 2 780 Ti cards, but thinking I am going to wait for 800 series.

I'd wait until new cards came out.
