Poll Should e-sports become an Olympic sport? (64 votes)

yea 16%
no 84%

I thought about this after watching a match of curling and couldn't help but think I'd rather watch e-sports. What do you think?

What exactly does curling have in common with competitive gaming?

Anyways, no it should not.

Prepare for a long ass debate about sports obsessed people saying "its not a sport" .... but then chess being included.

Not that I think any game touches chess.

but still.

e-sport is an esport. its a niche... I cant comprehend why people like watching curling... or hell even football, but they do... in droves.

Esports is now been corrupted primarily as advertizement and little else. A PR gimmick.

Olympics are based on old fashioned sports with a few new ones included. I think it's a slap in the face to considere e-sports in the same arena as real sports.

The closest thing you have is Wii Sports, and you might have an argument there.

It's a much more interesting "sport" than the majority of the mainstream sports so yeah sure, why not.

Why not have an e-sports olympics rather than trying to shoe horn it in somewhere it doesn't belong?

Why does a sport have to be an athletic activity?, even then you could consider gaming as a hand/finger-athletics :P

that would be a matter of discussion for the international olympic committee

besides. the olympics are sanctioned by WADA for anti-doping, which is unnecessary for esports.

Yeah but those take actually physical skills. Wii sports is not even 1 to 1 motion.

Um

Do you realize that you can watch the actual sports represented in Wii Sports at the olympics? Boxing's an olympic sport, tennis is an olympic sport, golf will be at the next summer olympics

Taking a look at some of the Olympic sports... And also the things that are considered a sport outside of gaming...

I have to say I love the ironic hypocrisy from sports purists lol

the word "sport" has been redefined many times, that's why stuff like poker is now considered a sport and not just a game like monopoly. These days anything where 2 or more people compete with a set of rules in place and minimal "luck" factor it's considered a sport.

The general public. Some gamers just can't live with slights against their hobby, and so are desperately always looking for approval by the athletic or artistic community. Gamers that can't recognize that they're just playing with toys are a sad bunch.

That's a fairly backwards way of thinking in fairness, considering that the definitions of both toys and sports are changing constantly.

Maybe in the brain-paralympics :).

E-sport is such a drag to watch to me. I'd take any sport in the current Olympics (even curling) over it.

I don't need anything to feel comfortable about playing games, as a gamer it's kinda what i do with my spare time but it seems that you do need a safety net of sorts "i'm a gamer but i like sports aswell so that makes it ok" kinda thing, but yeah keep on truckin. Don't let them toys get ya down.

Chess isn't at the olympics either though. It's also one single game with one single set of rules and relies purely on strategy to win.

Games are not one single thing, there's tens of thousands of them, you'd have to select individual games to be classed as sports, not just "gaming" as a whole.

At least there is balance and a little fitness involved in curling. Try doing the sweeping, on ice, as fast as they do, as long and precise as they do. I haven't seen one obese curling, Olympian. I know two obese gamers, and I love them, but man, get outside folks. Plus where does gaming go? Summer or Winter?
