If you think about it, if DLC was free for new games, wouldn't there be more incentive to buy them new in the first place and keep them? If developers are so desperate, then the only thing they could charge for would be some really huge add-ons like Ballad of Gay Tony but the price should be 50% lower. Those who would buy used games would get every dlc for current prices. Wouldn't that be better for gaming economy? After all, all those companies would like us gamers to keep games as long as possible. But then again they'd like to milk us for as long as well. What they should realize is that sometimes you just can't get both.

i suspect used games are partly to blame for the increased amount of dlc this gen.

Good DLC sales are a reason many games are actually profitable, so your idea would be suicidal

i always feel like i'll just wait for the complete edition when it comes to games that get a lot of DLC.... did it with Arkham City. only thing it's made me do is pre-order less and buy less near launch.

but yeah, some games are so awesome that you just can't wait.

That would not suit them at all. Looking at steam, they take a cut of 33% from every sale made (lets just assume that so do Sony and MS), so lets say a DLC map pack or whatever costs $10. That's roughly $6.66 from the sale of that map pack going to the developer/publisher. Especially for games like CoD, those sales rake in a lot of money, which the publisher and or developer would not want to throw away. Yes it would be nice to get free DLC, but it's worth too much to be given away for free, even to those who buy new.

That would be harking back to good old PC 1990s days when add-ons were free :(

Except there were small add-ons, like additional units and stuff. Proper expansion packs never were free. Modern day's big DLCs fall somewhere between those two.

That said, making games used to be dirty cheap in 90s

In this case this affects us. And the games themselves.
