who cares about b/c anyways, a lot of people already own a ps2, and if you don't there really cheap to buy.

"The new model is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, reflecting both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles (a total of 65 titles across all genres by Christmas). "

I don't understand. Why get rid of even Software Emulation?

Well, for one, it's nice to have something upscale PS2 games/make it so that there's no lag on HDtvs...

they removed the b/c... which is really bad news as this feature is what sold the ps2 for the first year....

Europe never got the hardware b/c that other regions did, and now no b/c at all? Harsh. Any word on a price in the UK?

well it cost more money to put in, it seems like a simple feature but really is not. and people can still get backwards compatability with the 80gb if they want to send more money

It's a gimped model, but Sony is desperate for sales I guess. They realize that price does matter more than anything else. I expect it to sell very well.

I love seeing the PS3 price drop, but I need BC for games. Sure everyone has a PS2, but nobody wants to keep two systems connected. Why no emulation? How could they just skip the feature?

If sony can get the PS3 down to 400$ here in the US, then maybe the 360 won't sweep the holiday console sales.

I care. When I bought the PS2, I sold my PS1 because I don't like having two console sitting around taking up space when I can play all games on one. To me, BC is a big feature as I continue to play or replay my old games over time but don't always want the old console sitting around.

While it isn't a HUGE deal, I am quite disappointed that if I want a PS3 I'm not going to get BC any more (I'm not buying the expensive model).

Yep, lots of people do that when it comes to flying commercially. They sacrifice service and meals for cheap air fares.

I'm just pissed because I decided I would get a PS3 at $300. This $400 model was a step in the right direction. But I have to have BC because I can only have so many systems at college. So this whole $400 model is a huge letdown. That's why I'm pissed.

Yeah it will be funny to see cows try to pretend that thy don't want B/C.

My money is on Sony releasing B/C in an update in the future. I don't understand why they don't just use emulation. They already have with the past PS3's.

I would assume that the no bc means that it will be software emulation. The new ps3 will still have firmware updates, and the software emulation is done through firmware.

PS1 games should probably still work , as far i as I know they are done through pure emulation. They just removed the ps2's GS.

That would make a lot of sense if b/c cost a lot of money, but it's software emulation so it doesn't. Removing it blows.

No it doesn't, It's just a software module for the Ps3OS. They can even distribute it with a firmware update.

To remove Software BC they would have to actively disable it in the OS(release a new firmware version). That would cost money.

As such, the 360 and Wii have a much greater value to me due to Backwards Compatibility.

I thought all Europe ever got was software emulated b/c. If that's right then I doub the SCEE mean they're going to use software emulated b/c rather than the hardware version that Europe never got.

We don't know for sure if it costs them nothing. None of us are engineers, so there must have been something in the PS3 that made that software emulation possible. If it costs them nothing to put it in, then they would have done it, but the fact that it's gone completely tells me that something was dependent on hardware and Sony didn't want to include it in order to drive costs down.

Bro...this is pretty damn clear, IMO:

The new model is no longer backwards compatible with PlayStation®2 titles, reflecting both the reduced emphasis placed on this feature amongst later purchasers of PS3, as well as the availability of a more extensive line-up of PS3 specific titles (a total of 65 titles across all genres by Christmas).SCEE

It's not there. seems pretty simple to me.

If you want to go cheap you have to sacrifice some things.

That would make a lot of sense if b/c cost a lot of money, but it's software emulation so it doesn't. Removing it blows.

must agree. why remove software emulation? was it dependent upon some other chips we don't know about?

More than likely there was a chip in there that they took out. B/c is still available if you want to pay for it.

I guess Cows now have to abandon knocking the 360's BC? At least every 360 can do it.

Regardless, interesting day.

No, it would have said that. It's simply gone.

No. I'malmost certainit's software emulation because this is pretty much exactly what they said when they introduced the 80GB in N/A. Even the explanation for the actis pretty much word for word of what they said.

Yeah but that's pretty much what theysaid last time and I even remember everyone getting all mad about it here too until Sony explained themselves further.

But whatever, going to have to wait for further comment on this one I guess.
