Whatever happened to great RTS games we used to enjoy.

Its been time since really good RTS have been on the market, it seems they are not getting a lot of attention, the last great RTS game i played is starcraft.

Games like -Command and Conquer, Battlezone, warcraft, black & white, age of mythology, age of empires.

it seems the gold age of RTS has passed, and now shooters have been the main highlight.

What game would you like seeing in the near future?

I like how the RTS genre is right now: a niche. That way the few developers that still make RTS don't try to dumb them down for attract the audience of CoD or games like that.

With Kickstarter and Greenlight, they have been coming up a lot more. The thing is there's a lot that are "Upcoming" rather than released.

There aren't as many RTS games as I would like, but devs like Blizzard, Stardock, Relic and Creative Assembly are keeping the genre alive and well.

there certainly aren't as many of the traditional C&C style games around apart from Starcraft which is a bit of a shame.

They are there, but they dont seem to get as much attention as other genres.

Planetary Annihilation is one I am interested in playing. And after hearing that most of my concerns were non issues from testers, my hype for Company of Heroes 2 has been restored.

May not be a "traditional" RTS, but you can look forward to Rome 2.

I do miss Black & White tho.

Let's see if Project GODUS gets enough support, eh.

There are plenty of great RTS games coming out. Heart of the Swarm just came out and we'll be getting Company of Heroes 2 and Total War: Rome II later this year.

OP means just Dune 2 clones, right? Strategy genre is doing better than ever as a whole. Devs just decided to do their own unique takes instead of trying to make more Dune 2 successors. because in that category it's not like you can win against Blizzard and EA anyway.

I find Dune 2 mechanics are severely dated anyway.

Base-building and unit selection by mouse dragging is old hat and should be modernized, imo.

I miss shooter/action game/RTS hybrids too. (e.g. BattleZone, Sacrifice, Evolva, ect.)

Maybe the genre could expand to console systems in the future and make better utilization of touch screens/pads.

It means you like 5-6 hour long movie games that usually consist of pressing the "A for awesome" button rather than actual games like RTS or Dark Souls.

Yeah, I never play a RTS game before I played X-com. Don't care either way.

ps3theJT

XCOM isn't an RTS (real time strategy); it's a turn based strategy game. Also, calling Total War games RTSes is somewhat iffy as they aren't really RTSese in the strictest sense given that the overworld map is turn based and the fact that you can pause the game at any time during a battle. I personally prefer this style, which is why Total War is my favorite strategy series, but I wouldn't call them RTSes along the lines of Starcraft.

Also, there's plenty of great RTSes out nowadays. Company of Heroes 2 is coming out; Starcraft 2. Sins of a Solar Empire. That new Command and Conquer could be good. Granted you don't have as many indie RTSes, but with games like Company of Heroes....why bother? jk, hopefully we see some good kickstarters. You just can't expect most asshole big publishers to put them out regularly.

Oh, also: check out FTL faster than light if you haven't already. It's a seriously f***ing amazing strategy game.

If a RTS game doesnt play well on a console, i think the devs should find a way to port them or some kind of controller as it suck to play an RTS game with a console controller, plus lots of RTS games ruled the game rankings and i dont need to mention that.

The last few years have been kind of meh when it comes to RTS releases. But this year looks like it'll be great for strategy fans, with a lot of high quality games coming up. As many have posted in this thread.

  • Wargame: Airland Battle
  • Company of Heroes 2
  • Rome 2
  • Command and Conquer Generals 2
  • Planetary Annihilation
  • ...

And Starcraft 2 expansion and AOE2: HD Edition have already been released this year.

As for what game I like to see announced in the near future: Age of Empires 4 or Age of Mythology 2. But I highly doubt we'll ever see those.

I always like the genre, but never much into the competitive side of the genre. I used to play Warcraft 3 and get my butt kicked. I love Starcraft 2 and I have never played 1 match online, besides the CO OP. Its a genre I wish I could learn more about multiplayer wise, but I just don't have the time..... I just stick to the single player campaigns and just roll on.

Company of Heroes 2 is in development and is coming out shortly. Starcraft 2 is going strong and dominating the entire genre. Rome 2 Total war is on its way. Planetary Annihilation is coming and looks fantastic.

I don't know how much more you can ask for. Good RTSs were always few and far between. It's a genre that is dominated by a few key series that if you cannot beat, you're just left behind. Entering the RTS genre today means direct competition against games like Starcraft and Company of Heroes. It's rarely worth the risk. This is why Planetary Annihilation needed to be kickstarted, a publisher wouldn't bother taking the risk of competition against the giants.

Genre is going through a downturn atm. A lot of that seems to have to do with MOBAs becoming the hot thing to develop, monetising RTS games being harder (see End of Nations troubled development) outside of your usual boxed model which StarCraft 2 has more or less all consumed. Not to say there aren't some gems - Men of War series has carried along, there's C&C Generals 2 - which is another Free to Play exercise and Company of Heroes on 2 the horizon. And then there's independent stuff like Planetary Annihilation which looks absolutely phenomenal - and don't forget Real Time Tactical games like Wargame: European Escalation's expansion and hybrids like Rome 2 coming out. Shooters have been the main highlight for well over a decade now man. The unusual thing at the moment in terms of trends is that turn based strategy seems to be making more of a comeback; that's partly due to iOS and Android devices and also due to a whole bunch of great little and triple A games coming out. You've got your Fire Emblems, XCOMs and Endless Spaces this side of Unity of Command and whatnot.

All units. All units. All units. All units. Man that game was dull.

arabi_89
Problem is it comes down to design. Micromanagement of many traditional RTS games doesn't translate to controllers well at all; speed and efficiency in management and commands is the name of the game; the best you can do is slow down the actual game, but that brings the problem of unit numbers and tasks into question. Which is why controllers have always been terrible for RTS games, and those few exclusive ones that pop up like Halo Wars don't satisfy anyone in terms of speed and action or strategic depth. A game like World in Conflict would've been perfect for controllers and Xbox Live online play. If anything XCom proved that turn based strategy could be super cool on consoles and control very fluidly compounded by the whole lack of realtime speedy gameplay, so it'll be interesting to see if there's more movements there in the future.

It doesn't take a genius to understand that RTS games don't quite work on consoles because of the interface and controls. To make an RTS is almost to cater exclusively to the PC community. In case any of you have not realized, devs are trying to move beyond being PC only.

rts lost a couple of developers and a couple of series are in hiatus, but theres plenty of rts to go around. starcraft 2 and c&c @, civ4, total war is still around....
