I guess RTS is just Starcraft right now. But 1 game does not keep a genre alive

RTS games are changing, the old base building system is dying while games like CoH2 and DoW2 seem to be selling well.

Strategy genre is much more than just RTS... games like Total War series, Anno2070 and Company Of Heroes for example are very good and very different from each other.

rts lost a couple of developers and a couple of series are in hiatus, but theres plenty of rts to go around. starcraft 2 and c&c @, civ4, total war is still around....

jsmoke03

Total War games are NOT RTS....

They are in the strategy genre yes, but half of the gaem is turnbased aspect and not real time combat. RTS stands for real time strategy.... Civilization4 that you listed also doenst fall under RTS category.

Pay2Win garbage

I doubt it really ends up being Pay2Win, but EA has all but killed C&C.

". It was re-purposed as the first in a series of free-to-playgames set in the Command & Conquer universe."

Developed by EA (AKA moneyhounds of the indsutry)

Meanwhile deluded dogs (AKA fans) will toss their money at EA for a "free" game

RTS games are just boring these days, none of them can ever compare to the greatness that was Halo Wars..... :D.

joke.

:)

That damn game ruined a Halo total conversion mod for C&C Generals.  Thanks, MS

I agree with you on this, but it seems most devs dont put the effort and/or the risk to put it on the consoles. since most games on pc get cracked and passed on which is my guess on why only the top dogs of RTS games survived, and relying on their fan base they can make the right sales. This isnt encouraging other devs to make new ips in such genres.

Oh wow, didnt even know about planetary anhilation until i came into this thread, that games looks nuts and has been the kind of rts game ive been looking for ever since total anhilation (best rts ever imo) which seems to be the kind of game the devs are trying to recreate.   Kickstarter - the savoir of gaming.

Already saying Pay2Win before the game is even announced? The developers already said they'll avoid that Pay2Win model, they know it would only ruin the game.

And do you believe that?

Even after ME3 and C&C4?

Some of those are pretty ancient and two of them are the same game, not exactly a strong list given how prolific the genre was in the past. I think it's a pity that so few people are interested in RTS these days. I think the perception is that they are these ultra hardcore, complicated, inaccessible games so people just brush them off without giving them a chance. They are actually really easy to play, often light hearted and most only become challenging once you are very familiar with the mechanics. My son has been playing RTS games since he was 7 with no problems, they are genuinely not nearly as difficult to get into as people imagine.

Rome 2 and CoH2 are coming out soon. Don't forget Europa 4. Not to mention Starcraft and I'm pretty sure Dawn of War is going to continue.

I think its the micro that puts people off. Some RTS's require an insane amount of micro-management.

Pirates killed the RTS genre. Only a few big companies can afford the risk of making anything bigger than indie games. I don't see the RTS market expanding unless next gen consoles get KBM support or improves touch/motion controls.

I still play older RTS games because there aren't any newer ones like the old classic top down, base buildings ones.. however we do have Company of Heroes 2 and Rome 2: Total War which look amazing.

If only the same could be said for MMOs. The gaming industry would be a better place, where 3rd world country finally gets to play high quality genres.

This is a weird thread to make with HotS recently released and like a half dozen quality RTS's coming in the next year.

Anywho, the strategy genre has simply expanded into more than just RTS's. Now we get stuff like XCOM (again) to change things up a bit.
