The 3DS service is now disabled in all regions.

Thank you for your support.

Nintendo has learned that some consumers, including minors, have been exchanging their friend codes on Internet bulletin boards and then using Swapnote (known as Nintendo Letter Box in other regions) to exchange offensive material. Nintendo has been investigating ways of preventing this and determined it is best to stop the SpotPass feature of Swapnote because it allows direct exchange of photos and was actively misused.

Nintendo always wants to provide a positive experience for all consumers and limit the risk of any inappropriate activity or misuse of a service. We feel it is important on this occasion to take this action.

We are very sorry for any inconvenience to the many consumers who have been using this service responsibly; however this decision was made considering the point that many minors also use this feature of Swapnote. Thank you for your understanding.

Nintendo will continue to work to ensure more consumers are aware of our Parental Control features, which allow parents to manage their children’s experience on our systems. For more information, please click here.

Service stop date: Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013, 7 p.m. PT

Service being stopped: Nintendo 3DS software Swapnote – Sending and receiving notes using SpotPass

Affected regions: All regions where the service was offered

Special Notes services are also stopped.

A kneejerk reaction if there ever was one. They can cry "Think of the children!" all they want, but killing the service prematurely was not the right course of action.

Thoughts, System Wars?

What the hell.

This is one of the best parts of the 3DS.

Speechless, really. Clocked in so many hours on this service.

Blame Charizard.

Thanks for the memories...

So how about Nikki assist trophy for Smash in remembrance?

She'd throw them letters and give people paper cuts.

They better get 3ds miiverse up and running soon. This shit ain't gonna fly for long

#13 Posted by sailor232 (4259 posts) -

Not good, I loved this feature, how are we supposed to message friends now? gimped 3ds for sure.

#14 Posted by GhoX (4653 posts) -

Swapnote was allegedly involved in the distribution and sharing of child porn.

It's regrettable, but the service was greatly misused.

So... sheep were running an illegal child porn industry through the 3ds

Sony fans own 3DS's too.

But the good news is that you can still STREETPASS NOTES!!! :D

...

...I'm deleting this useless s*** now. Thank you, Nintendo for taking away the closest thing we had to a messaging system.

#21 Edited by Bardock47 (5146 posts) -

Good riddance, maybe we can get an actual messaging system FFS.

Man, all those private parts I drew on Swapnote really took a toll on Nintendo. Sorry everyone

Eh, something about Swapnote doesn't sit right with me since it's announcement.

#25 Edited by Bigboi500 (28804 posts) -

I hated that shit and deleted the app a good while ago. New unreadable scribbles every five minutes. ugh

#26 Posted by finalstar2007 (24850 posts) -

They shut it down? ok wtf?

only on kiddynintendo.. my only way to communicate with the people i met online that use a 3DS is now gone :/

#27 Edited by LegatoSkyheart (24212 posts) -

I'm assuming some parent found out that their kid was "sexting" with their 3DS and threatened to sue Nintendo.

Shame real Shame, Swap Note was one of the cooler features of the 3DS. :(

Here's hoping a Miiverse App replaces it.

EDIT:

I just read someone's response that might just explain it all.

Pokemon X and Y came out a few weeks back and if you play the game long enough you unlock the Friend Safari which allows you to capture different kinds of Pokemon depending on how many Friends you have a such.

Thanks for that, many people started adding everyone to their 3DS friends list (on forums) just so they could get the most out of that feature.

So I imagine what happened was that this went down and some people decided to get "cute" (or creepy) and start sending rude photos or whatever.

#28 Posted by freedomfreak (38140 posts) -

It was pretty cool, but had no real use. I thought it was some kind of PM system. But it takes ages for your messages to arrive.

#29 Posted by HalcyonScarlet (3745 posts) -

Nintendo's problem is that they're so afraid of the risks of online, that they end up with nothing at all. They barely implement it or it's features and it's holding them back.

#30 Posted by Micropixel (809 posts) -

It was a cool feature and a neat concept, but as Freakdomfreak pointed out, messages took forever to arrive.

Very strange news indeed.

#31 Posted by charizard1605 (54325 posts) -

Seriously though, I used to love this app. It was one of my favorite 3DS features. Fuck you, Nintendo. Give me Miiverse.

#32 Posted by CleanPlayer (9763 posts) -

@CleanPlayer: you're a disgrace to your username

I swear I have been HIV/STD tested at least once in my lifetime! PLEASE BELIEVE ME NINTENDO, I NEED SWAPNOTE

#33 Edited by Wanderer5 (25640 posts) -

Kneejerk reaction indeed, through can't say I will miss it. I hope they will make it up with a faster message system.

Man, all those private parts I drew on Swapnote really took a toll on Nintendo. Sorry everyone

We're all guilty....

Punish the many for the actions of the few. Yep, that sounds like Nintendo alright.
