Off topic, but why is it Americans write the date as month/day/year? Why does this make any sense?
Because that is the way most of us would read it aloud....."Today is December 3rd, 2013"
Not really, I (as many non-American) read it as "the 3rd of December". dd/mm/yyyy is pretty much universal format, except American.

And I also read as 'today is the 3rd of December,' logically you go from the smallest unit to the largest; or from the largest unit to the smallest at a push; but not jumping about.
