2)There are effects on PC that just aren't possible on console. Things like extreme tessalation, tressfx, PhysX, a plethora of AntiAlliasing options, the list goes on. You don'g get these effects on console now. And when the new consoles get them there will be newer effects that come out that will again only be for PC (which makes me laugh at that guy who said consoles dictate how PC games look. I mean seriously dude?) This is why we pay for the tech so we can get all the latest effects that are available for gaming. These effects don't come to consoles till the next generation. Some people like to be on the cutting edge others don't. To each his own.

With Intel's Havok Physics GpGPU, there's very little need for NVIDIA's PhysX on AMD GCN.

[QUOTE="PraetorianMan"]Has anyone mentioned how the GTX 680 by itself costs more than the probable price of the entire PS4?mastershake575

Sort of. Users have mentioned that the 760Ti/8000 series (both will be out by ps4 launch) will perform close to a GTX 680 at mid ranged prices ($250 range)

The 700/8000 series are using the same designs from their previous models so the performance improvement won't be by much.

I am guessing the difference will be like the GTX 400 to GTX 500 series.

The GTX 570 was similar in power to the GTX 480.

So most likely the GTX 770 will be close in performance to the GTX 680.

It won't be until later 2014 when we will get a complete new redisign for video cards.

"We can significantly enhance performance by bypassing a lot of the artificial DirectX limitations and bottlenecks that are imposed so DirectX can work across a wide range of hardware," he revealed.

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/digitalfoundry-inside-playstation-4

What was intriguing was new data on how the PlayStation 4's 18-compute-unit AMD graphics core is utilised. Norden talked about "extremely carefully balanced" Compute architecture that allows GPU processing for tasks that usually run on the CPU. Sometimes, employing the massive parallelisation of the graphics hardware better suits specific processing tasks.

"The cool thing about Compute on PlayStation 4 is that it runs completely simultaneous with graphics," Norden enthused. "So traditionally with OpenCL or other languages you have to suspend graphics to get good Compute performance. On PS4 you don't, it runs simultaneous with graphics. We've architected the system to take full advantage of Compute at the same time as graphics because we know that everyone wants maximum graphics performance."

Leaked developer documentation suggests that 14 of the PS4's compute units are dedicated to rendering, with four allocated to Compute functions. The reveal of the hardware last month suggested otherwise, with all 18 operating in an apparently "unified" manner. However, running Compute and rendering simultaneously does suggest that each area has its own bespoke resources. It'll be interesting to see what solution Sony eventually takes here.

Note that PS4 *is* technically an X86 PC with HTPC like form factor. Semi-compact X86 PC at reasonable cost can't have a ~200 watts GPU.

Like Apple's Macintosh brand, Sony's Playstation brand has switch to X86.

Replace Apple with Sony.

Replace Intel with AMD.

Note that

1. PhysX CUDA (GpGPU) only runs on NVIDIA CUDA hardware.

2. GpGPU part with Havok physics.

3. Current Physx CUDA (normal Geforce cards doesn't run NVIDIA TCC driver) is only practical for visual effects not for game play. Read http://www.slideshare.net/zlatan4177/gpgpu-algorithms-in-games

PS; NVIDIA TCC with CUDA is similar to AMD's HSA low latency driver stack. Atm, NVIDIA TCC disables Fermi/Kepler's graphics hardware i.e. not ready for home use.

More info on NVIDIA TCC/CUDA from

TCC DRIVER FOR WINDOWS The TCC (Tesla Computer Cluster) driver is a Windows driver for CUDA C/C++ that enables remote desktop, services, and reduces the CUDA kernel launch overhead on Windows. Note that the TCC driver disables graphics on the Tesla products.

silly consolite.  I'll just quote what I said earlier in the thread.

"Let me explain how it works to you mad cows one more time.  PC sets the bar.  A new console comes out attempting to achieve the bar PREVIOSLY set by PC.  PC raises the bar.  During the life span of the new console through high optimization and learning to maxmize the effeciency of all the tools available on the console, consoles attempt to keep up with the new bar set by PC (this is how console extends their lifespans).  Then PC RAISES the bar AGAIN and the what was once new console cannot compete and its time for a new console to emerge.  This is how it works.  The sooner you mad cows accept this the sooner we can have REAL discussion on system wars."

NFJSupreme

let me explain this to you,we don't give a fu** we don't pay $1,000 for stupid over priced crap, and we still play the same games.. Those extra $ hundreds go for games... look at example one the 680GTX is what from $459 to almost $600.? http://www.newegg.com/Product/ProductList.aspx?Submit=ENE&DEPA=0&Order=BESTMATCH&N=-1&isNodeId=1&Description=680GTX&x=0&y=0 To get what at 1080p more than the 7850.? More frames because with the same settings you will not get better quality,at 1920x1200 on BF3 the 7850 get some 50 FPS on ultra the 680GTX does close to 100,the quality is the same regardless of the frame difference and more than 30FPS on consoles is hardly use. So once again you waste your money on something that you will not see a real benefit other than more frames basically.. And the 690GTX is even worst $1,000 dollars for a GPU that can be match by 2 $300 dollars ones. PC gamers are the dumbest gamers ever.

OK i thought you were reasonable but you are just another one of the butthurt mad cows.  Todays ownage seems to be getting to you.

1)PC has options.  You are free to get what ever range of GPU you like.  There is not "enthusiest" option for consoles.  If there was guess what?  You would probably get one.  There are cards for everyone on PC.  Me, I like a good solid entry level high end card.  Something around 300 to 350. Maybe 380 if the price per dollar is right.  Now there are enthusiest with deep pockets who just love to be on the cutting edge of tech.  They will spend top dollar to get the best of the best available.  They will even sometimes get two or even THREE of these $1,000 cards.  That is their parogotive.  A lot of people who get these set ups use them for more than just gaming.  There are some really impressive calculations you can do with a graphics cards since unlike regular cpus they have hundreds or even thousands of cores.  Earlier this month a professor broke the record for Pi calculation using 690s, 680s, and a bunch of 570s to do the calculations.  http://www.karrels.org/pi/  There are numerous reasons someone would want a super GPU and a lot of it is just not gaming.

I like to look at PC gamers as the power users of gamers.  We build rigs.  We configure specs. We research what the latest tech is.  We generally have more knowledge of the whats at the forefront of the gaming industry.  Just because you don't see value in all this doesn't mean others don't.  The money is irrelavent.  I get just as much satisfaction building a $450 rig that can play all the latest games as I do when I built my rig that cost me $1100.  Its all part of the fun to me.  I have friends who hit me up all the time wanting to build a rig.  They give me a budget and I cookk something up.  Its what I like to do.  A lot of PC gamer are the same.  We like to talk tech.

Anyway you seem a little butthurt.  Clearly todays dose of reality cut you deep.  Its OK, your console will still be great.  No need to cry about my PC being better.

All this crap is funny when sony just announce the PS4 support features not even on DirectX 11 has.. ""Sony is building its CPU on what it's calling an extended DirectX 11.1+ feature set, including extra debugging support that is not available on PC platforms. This system will also give developers more direct access to the shader pipeline than they had on the PS3 or through DirectX itself. "This is access you're not used to getting on the PC, and as a result you can do a lot more cool things and have a lot more access to the power of the system," Norden said. A low-level API will also let coders talk directly with the hardware in a way that's "much lower-level than DirectX and OpenGL," but still not quite at the driver level."' http://arstechnica.com/gaming/2013/03/sony-dives-deep-into-the-ps4s-hardware-power-controller-features-at-gdc/ The shader language on PS4 actually has more features than those found on MS one,so much for your $500 dollar GPU than can do everything, like Carmack say sony make a great choice. Considering that the majority of people on steam don't have GPU more power or even on par with the PS4 say allot about the GPU market, and what people chose to buy apparently they do care about how much they spent..

However, running Compute and rendering simultaneously does suggest that each area has its own bespoke resources. It'll be interesting to see what solution Sony eventually takes here.

AMD also push HSA for next-gen PC games http://www.slideshare.net/zlatan4177/gpgpu-algorithms-in-games

Unlike NVIDIA's TCC/CUDA, AMD's HSA is an open standard.

Since you seemed to miss my point that these type of effects come on PC first then to console and then when console gets them PC will get new ones here you go.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=So8-emUeh38 this was in 2011.  TWO YEARS AGO.  Not sure why you even post what you posted.  I guess so the consolites can feel a little better about themselves.

Also Havoc physics has been out for a while now so again not sure why you choose to post this other than for damage control which I find puzzeling judging by your sig.  But whatever dude.

AMD is late with their HSA in fact is the reason sony is using its own version..

That's not nice.

Sorry i should not generalize but when some one spend $1,000 for a GPU like the 690GTX when you can get very similar performance by using 2 way cheaper 7950 in crossfire it most be a dumb person.. Hell 2 7970 cost less and perform better in cross fire as well. The 7970 was already expensive the 690GTX is just ridiculous.

Sony is member of HSA hence they can roll their own HSA type software solution (for BSD based OS).

AMD is focusing on HSA for Windows and the internal beta is already running on Windows. HSA for Windows should be ready about same time as AMD Fusion summit 2013 and AMD Kaveri APU release.

And this is why I don't venture into system wars. Yeah, no sh*t the PS4 is outdated. Consoles are meant to be cost effective. If they put in more recent hardware it'll be like 2006's five hundred and ninety nine US dollars all over again.

master race continues to impress, words are not even needed.

In b4 not the entire GDDR5 8 gigs was used on the ps4.    Take a look at the post date of the video, EPIC has updated the engine to use the 8 gigs.

People dont understand More ram does not equal better graphics.    What more ram does is make sure a GPU is not bottlenecked.   More ram does not result in better looking graphics.

If that was the case, you should be able to slap 8 gigs of gddr5 onto a 8800 gt card and turn it into something much more.  But obviously it does not work like that.    Consolites just have zero clue.

lunar1122

More ram does help with higher res textures. So in reality it does help with graphics since games rely a ton on textures. Most models are flat, relying on Normal, Specular, Diffuse, Transparency mapping to make it look better. The higher the resolution of those the more memory they eat up and it also ties into the GPU as well for those, but without enought memory to hold it you have to lower the texture resolution and makeing a less defined/more blurry texture.

I do agree with you though about how dumb people are about this, many people seem to think 8 GDDR5 is magic. All it means is the PS4 won't have the bottleneck the PS3 has, and should mainly mean Bethesda will have an easier time with the PS4 lol. It will help with texture loading to reduce pop-in too.

Overall I personally think the PS4 is balanced pretty well and should do fine and that PC elitists exagerate the "graphics bump" from console to PC for the most part. Bioshock Infinite for example looks a bit better on PC, but not a whole nother level. Some higher res textures here and there, a tad bit better lighting and a resolution bump. (Also note unless your running something like a GTX 670 or higher your not getting 60 FPS on Ultra)

Essentially both sides are delusional

Sure, but then again... there's some reason why one would ust 690 over 2x680.

It's why I bought 2 670s instead and get like the same performance. I guess the 690 is for those who want less power consumption, heat and noise.
