No, the current UI is nearly perfect, especially with the ability to create themes. I don't see how it can be confusing.
About the only thing that needs to be added to the current UI is maybe the ability to create "subfolders" within system to help keep the stuff like music and videos organized better.
:P Again, the big picture is what matters here. Something you and wingman are missing hugely.[QUOTE="tomarlyn"] Aha, real issues here. *grabs coat and leaves* :PStevo_the_gamer
Hugely? I see your interpretation of this being overblown to be rather huge though, so at least our words are the same!:P But c'mon Steven, at least your point with bluray speeds were something to consider, this is just Blackbond's level of repetition that just revolves around the definition of nitpicking.:P

Except the integration of the PSN Store with the dashbaord. The actual organization of the PSN Store. The syncing of trophies. The downloading and installing data. The update system. Notification system. Intregration of profile. ect...
The only slow part is the icons take some time to load up.I agree, PS3 UI is real crap. The "x" menu is extremly slow.

I have no problems with it, its clean, efficient, easy to navigate. Why would they spend the money the develope a new UI, when they dont need to? Pointless waste of money. And no not everything needs to be updated and refined every chance you get, at some point you need to say okay its done, its good the way it is.

I get rather annoyed by inefficient design of things. Just as going through nine menus to exit the PC version of Assassins Creed. Again, it may not seem like much... but Jesus Christ, nine menus to get out of a game?Edit: Eleven steps to take actually.
its good the way it is.Tell that to the developers who consistently update and refine their games...bri360
It really is dated now and the new Xbox interface will push that gap even further apart. There is far to much text options on the screen and everything is just one big list, followed by another list.I would have thought that since Sony market the PS3 as an entertainment hub thatthey would release updates to the OS to streamline this but all they do is add another option to an ever growing list. Sony have missed a real oppurtunity to offer an excellent 3D Blu Ray player with an excellent modern interface that can also play some greatgames and offer genuine internet for £199 versus £149 for theSony BDP480 3D BD player.
From gaf in response to the fall update: "Kind of excited for my 360 to look like my PS3."
Amidoingitright?
Anyway, yes, I wouldn't mind an overhaul, but I don't necessarily need one.
I'm fine with it as it is now. Never had any issues, and themes keep the XMB visually fresh (like the one I'm currently using). I've always liked more simple UIs though.
What really needs a UI overhaul is Netflix. It was sooo good before they changed it. /offtopic

It worked better when it used the disc. :(
I'm guessing you're also one of those who believe the PS3 is infinitely superior because you have to spend less seconds changing discs?

Sorta, Steven here hates installs.:P I'm amazed at how he manages to keep his cool with PC gaming though, with all the installs, updates and such.:P ( On a tangent here, it took me 30 mins to update BFBC2 today:|... + 1 for the trip down memory lane and for PGR3 being the game showed.. awesome memories indeed. It'll be five years come November for the anniversary of the Playstation 3--and in that time, the UI has gone through very small incremental updates and barely any updates levied towards the actual gaphical design, besides one minor update which made the background more animated if memory serves me correctly. It's actually kind of sad that I can't even recall any updates to the UI yet I can easily point out the barage of firmware updates the PS3 has received since its release.
The design is archaic; its age shows compared to the Xbox GUI. The Xbox has gone through multiple overhauls which has helped to make the dashboard fresher and easily more vivid, or exciting. With the Fall update for the Xbox 360 right around the corner and the update looking better than ever, I have to ask PS3 owners if they would like the same respect with a dashboard overhaul?
The Live Tile system which is being used by Windows 8, and currently being utilized by Windows Mobile 7.0-7.5 has been praised by a variety of outlets and consumers alike by its ease of use or accessibility, and it's attractive interface. You look at this new--fresh design--and compare it to the same 2006 Dashboard design of the PS3?
Now, I imagine people are going to dish out the same argument of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it" outline. And I'm afraid I don't agree entirely with this notion, otherwise I would be still stuck using the same grossly archaic dashboard for the Xbox 360 back in 2005, which comparing that to today and the new update? It looks like a frickin' eyesore (although nostalgia makes me snicker looking at it). We've come a long ways, and even in the gaming world, we like to have evolution and innovation come out--not stagnant ways of thinking. People praised the PS3 Slim, yet the "Fat PS3" was a fair design as is, in fact, it was more durable than the PS3 Slim aside from being more power hungry. Once again, people supported that yet the idea of a "new" interface avoids Sony like the plague, why?
I want new. Do you?

My PC can do a variety of things while a game is downloading and/or installing. My PS3 cannot. Consoles are supposed to be "Plug-N-Play" ... not plug in a game, and wait a half hour for a game to install (I'm looking at you GT5).Sorta, Steven here hates installs.:P I'm amazed at how he manages to keep his cool with PC gaming though, with all the installs, updates and such.:P ( On a tangent here, it took me 30 mins to update BFBC2 today:|... In the interest of trying to take this as far down the rabbit hole as possible (hopefully we can get someone to compare battery charging times in two or three pages): I'm pretty sure PS3 owners spend more time waiting for mandatory installs than 360 owners waste switching discs, never mind all the time PS3 owners spend waiting for updates (both games and firmware) to download+install.

I normally just let my stuff install on my PC instead of being restless and surf the web, but that's just me.:P Also everyone does stuff while downloading, like hey I play my PS3 games while it does background downloads!:D
I think its fine because its functional. Live just cluttered everything and added ads everywhere. I won't say the XMB is a perfect system, but I'm used to it, I would be frustrated to figure out something new on the main screen. An update to the in game XMB though would be something that I unconditionally support however.
You're referring to background downloads like videos, music, or game content though. Not game related updates, firmwares, or game installs. To which is annoying is the limit of one item being downloaded at one time--across both systems--that is incredibly lame.I normally just let my stuff install on my PC instead of being restless and surf the web, but that's just me.:P Also everyone does stuff while downloading, like hey I play my PS3 games while it does background downloads!:D

True, it bugs me when I can't play my game while it updates on a console or on a PC.:( It pays off when my laptop is right next to my tv, so I can just alternate at ease!:) But alas, we don't get what we always want now do we Steven? Otherwise we wouldn't have so much fun reading your threads about dissecting the minor faults of the Playstation Trois to most, but greater to yourself!:P

How is this "cluttered"?
Greater? Don't be silly, I have called all these issues minor faults--it's the overall picture itself which classifies PS3 UI being inferior to the Xbox GUI in *many* regards.True, it bugs me when I can't play my game while it updates on a console or on a PC.:( It pays off when my laptop is right next to my tv, so I can just alternate at ease!:) But alas, we don't get what we always want now do we Steven? you can customize the UI with any theme you want? are you guys serious? it has no ads, no nothing.

So you are saying that the sum of all the minor faults becomes the the greater aspect of your point of it being inferior (ie the topic:P)? Because so far, I'm sorry to break it to you, but it all still adds up to being a bigger version of the word nitpicking.:P You can add nitpicking aspects into a greater picture, but even then all the previous aspects were still a part of said activity.:P You'd totally have a point if there was a problem to begin with though, but at this point it's like cultivating one.:P

there is no reason for the icons to be that big. notice how you can never see all the options, either horizontal or vertical. its because of how bloated everything is.
with the PS3 XMB, you can pretty much see everything at once, since the icons are about a tenth of the size of the oversized xbox icons. its much cleaner looking (in my opinion) and easier to navigate.

yes but unless you linger on it for, like, 10+ seconds you wont see any ads

Why isn't there? Why do you have to see ALL the options available? You can't even see all the options available for the PS3? :?

It's nitpicking to want a overhaul of an archaic design because the current design already has quite a number of deficits compared to the competition? I wasn't aware it's "nitpicking" to address readily visible issues like notifications, install/download, trophy sync, profile system, game data, ect. The XMB has some design issues. We can all cover our ears and pretend the PS3 UI is perfect, but you'd think we'd want more refinement to improve the service.
